Hi Laura, I'm sorry, you got the year correct, but their first release was "Killing an Arab", followed by "10.15 Saturday Night" both in '78, this was their 3rd single release.
Like the other guy said: their first release was "Killing an Arab"... and the song is from 1979, but that version is not. They rerecorded the song in 1986 with new vocals and made the video we see here.
“This band is ahead of their time” says Jay after they dated a song from the seventies as the nineties- that’s the magic of the Cure. A Forest would be a great follow up to this x
I agree. A Forest is one of my favorite songs. It should be the 5:55 studio version though and not the music video which lacks the intro and has poor sound quality in comparison.
This is one of my favorite Cure songs, and they have so MANY great songs. Their music and sound are so brilliantly creative. They are one of my very favorite bands ever! So fun to dance to. June 1979.
It's a testament to how timeless this song and The Cure are, that you thought it was late 90's. This was actually released in June of 1979 so it's 45 yrs old,
@@pietzsche They have reacted to Lovesong and to Lullaby. Lovesong is one of my faves as well. Also A Forest (going way back), but I doubt Jay has the patience for that languid intro.
@@GodLovesComics Oh, nice, I realised Lullaby since they mentioned it, cool that they did Lovesong too. I really think that's the one that'll stay forever, perfect pop tune, and not weird like most of their stuff :P
@@pietzsche Well I like the weird stuff too, but Lovesong is a classic pop song while still sounding totally sincere, melancholic and heartfelt. By contrast, I hated Friday, I'm in Love when it came out because it had none of those traits, and none of the layers both lyrically and musically of most of the band's incredible catalog.
Amber nailed The Cure with 3 words: edgy, beautiful and deep. You should check out “Disintegration”, “Fascination Street”, “Pictures of You”, “In Between Days” and “Burn”. Still love this band ❤
This was the first exposure to The Cure for a lot of us 70/80's kids. This song always give me huge nostalgia feels. Gotta hit "Picture of You", "Why Can't I Be You", "Strange Attraction", and my fav, "Fascination Street".
The Cure are one of the most influential bands of all time. They have dark and moody songs and updeat and happy songs. Most pop/rock bands of the early to mid 80s where influenced in some way but The Cure. This song is from the late 70s. This was emo before emo was even a thing. We called it Goth.
Best thing The Cure ever did was "A Forrest". I spent a great two week holiday with Robert Smith's brother, in Greece, 1987. He told me it was he who taught Robert how to play guitar. Smith was much admired by Bowie, incidentally.
The Cure is my all-time favorite band. I even have a tattoo of Robert Smith’s silhouette from the Boys Don’t Cry album cover. They helped a shy, awkward teenager to not feel so alone, providing a sort of companionship through their music, which is deeply layered in sound and meaning. Thank you for choosing this song and I look forward to more. “In Between Days”, “Close to Me” and “Why Can’t I Be You?” are just a few of many songs that further showcase their genius.
The Cure is my 5th favorite band ever. "Boys Don't Cry" was originally released in 1979. If you guys want the true Cure experience, you should react in chronological order. They've been through many stages. Early on, they were post punk. They veered gothic, but soon crept up on very pop sensibilities. Ultimately, they are a new wave/alternative band with lots of versions to offer. React to each song on their early greatest hits compilation, "Standing on a Beach." It covers the late 70s into the mid-late 80s. I think "Boys Don't Cry" is the 3rd song on it. You guys do those 10-12 songs, and you'll be versed in The Cure's journey BEFORE hitting it big in America with "Just Like Heaven." ❤
The song was originally written in 1979, this version is a rerecording from 1986, they also did the video in 1986. You can hear the difference especially in the bridge ('Misjudged your limits...') where they doubled his voice which wasn't in the original version plus his voice sounded a bit more squeaky in '79. This is the '79 version: th-cam.com/video/LnW3YzAE3xk/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Shecx
This takes me back in time…. They were ahead of their time, as this was released in 79. I would also recommend Letters to Elise, my personal favorite of theirs. Thanks for the memories
Cure classics just never get old! This is one of their many great ones. "Close to Me", "Jumping Someone Else's Train", "Screw", or "Love Cats" would probably be my next suggestions, but there are so many incredible ones to choose from.
I couldn't get enough of the cure in the 80s. I am an enormous fan and they finally made it into the Rock Hall. I am spinning in my living room again kids. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. You just gave me the CURE to my blues today. It is my eighties all the way Jay. Love it. By the way Trent from "Nine Inch Nails" said they were his biggest inspiration. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
I love that you got late 90s from this. As others have said, it was 1979. I've seen them live twice (in 1992 and again in 2023), and they closed out the show with this one both times. I think you'd love "Hot Hot Hot" and "Why Can't I Be You", both very upbeat and from the late 80s. They have SO many fantastic songs - "The Walk", "Pictures Of You", "Fascination Street", "Close To Me" and for just a FUN song, try "Lovecats." Robert Smith, the lead singer, was briefly a Banshee and played guitar on their cover of "Dear Prudence", which is one of my absolute favorite Siouxsie vocals!
One of the first Cure songs I heard, when it just came out. Released as a stand-alone single. I became a huge fan. Love all their music. This a bit faster than the original; makes it sound a bit happier. I think this version is 1983. I like the original version (1979) better. This is still one of my very favorites by them. “Lullaby” was released 1989: ten years After Boys Don’t Cry. First compilation album; really first album in US. Their first album was never released in the USA. Boys Don’t Cry album is it’s US equivalent.💕
”Fascination Street” from the ”Disintegration”-album, released in 1989, is what I would call a true masterpiece in synth rock. Happy 65th birthday Robert Smith.
Originally recorded and released around 1979-80 if memory serves me correctly. Was re-released in the mid eighties as a remix, which brought them the exposure they deserved to have. They were one of these bands who were ahead of their time, and still endure to this day as a group.
There's so much left to explore with The Cure. They've been active from the 70s to the present. I would suggest A Forest, The Hanging Garden, In Between Days, Close to Me, and Fascination Street.
The Cure are one of my Top 5 Bands All Time!! They really go into all kinds of different styles, but keeping that moody feeling. One of my favorite dance songs of theirs is "Hot Hot Hot!" (not to be confused with the Buster Poindexter version).
Great post-punk/new wave, alternative, goth band. Many great songs and videos from them. This is from their 1st album (1979). They had songs during the '80s and '90s. The Cure were big during the '80s and '90s. Check out "A Forest" next. I was travelling in India in the early 90s listening to the Cure on my walkman. The bus driver asked me if it was ok to put if on his cassestte player. The faces on the locals was a picture, the horror on his face as he handed if back after one song was one of the funniest things I have seen.
Its much earlyer than the late 90´s - but my favorit from The Cure are A forrest. Its awesome. The guitar and the bas in that song is... so full... Its like you just wait for something, but at the same time its perfect. Never heard anything like that
This just made me think to suggest something offa The Violent Femmes first album, I'd say Blister in the Sun. They're so much fun, y'all will love them if you haven't heard them yet
I just listened to each of those three songs, and despite not hearing them for years, I got both eight and the stuttering 7 right, singing at the top of my lungs 😁
@shelq3814 I love shirts like that, you only get it if you know it. I have a shirt that in very plain font just says "Oh my my, oh hell yes". Not my favorite song of his, but it's so understated and kinda secret 🤘. Same for yours
This was released in 1979 as a single...album was great too...my first year as a uni student...toured Australia in 1980 and saw them live in Melbourne ...wonderful memories
🇬🇧 Late 90s!? Lol😆1979. Just shows how much ahead of their time they were. This was their first hit, & my favourite by them. Happy birthday Robert. ❤🎼🎶
Crazy that your guess was 20 years out, it transports me back into the late late 70's/80's indie/goth scene which was just amazing in the UK, such a great time, it's weird as I would never call myself a Cure fan, but at the time I owned all their albums, they were just essential listening, I was listening to 'The Wedding Present' earlier, have you reacted to them? They were an awesome 80's Indie band.
Great group. Love this song and their !Love Cats". Had the honour to see him play in concert, with one he played in two bands: The Cure and Siouxsie & The Banshees.
The song was from 1979. But this is the 1986 new voice mix.The young lads in the video went on to be in their own band after this. Love the cure. 🧟♀️⭐✌🤘🖤
Yeah this is really early Cure, 1979...what i love most about them is their duality...they have fun & catchy poppy songs, but they also have dark goth even violent songs & albums like Pornography & Disintegration & dark yet melodic songs like Charlotte Sometimes...the Cure own their own rabbit hole...
I actually thought Jay might find this song too simple, too monotone, so I'm happy that both he and Amber really got it. Yes it came out well before the 90's and yes The Cure always were and still are ahead of their time. This is one of their earlier hits but much like Depeche Mode they are one of those bands that has multiple hits and great songs across entire albums...particularly the albums Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (1987) and Disintegration (1989). Both light years ahead of their time.
It is a very colorful career they have and this is another example of their signature soundscape from the Godfathers of Goth. I hope you get to react to The Cure's Love Cats video if you want something completely different from the early 80s that shows their humor and showmanship. Instead of the stage show versions all over TH-cam, go find their actual official Love Cats video that's a mixture of spooky, smart, silly, and fun. It has upbeat Vaudeville Tin Pan Alley type humor with a spooky Goth vibe. The Love Cats video shows them in their earlier younger days with shorter hair and gives off a similar vibe as the Lullaby video about spiders except it's funnier and more upbeat but within that same Cure genre of Goth.
Very Cool! Robert Smith is one of the most singular human beings on the planet as well as in music. The Cure have influenced and inspired almost every musician and songwriter that came after them. I recommend you take a deeper dive on them. There are so many unique, creative and beautiful songs/albums to check out. Have fun.
❤This is from 1979 and is timeless. The Cure influenced so many bands. They did a very cool cover of The Beatles Hello, Goodbye. It is on the Art Of McCartney 2014 album that has top tier bands covering McCartney songs. Billy Joel covers Maybe I'm Amazed 🔥🔥🔥
"Late 90s" LOL This is the second single from "Three Imaginary Boys", 1979 (but not included in the album). The Cure and Joy Division and a few other British bands fit the sound for future generations.
Yes, the Cure was ahead of their time! They were considered one of the founding fathers of the Post Punk genre back in the late 70s. This is from their fantastic debut album. Jumping Someone Else's Train, Killing an Arab, 10:15 Saturday Night are also stand-out tracks on this album.
Released in the late 70s & re-released around 1981. Other early songs to consider are: 1 GRINDING HALT 2 KILLING AN ARAB 3 JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S TRAIN 4 THE LOVE CATS 5 CLOSE TO ME 6 LET'S GO TO BED
Boys Don't Cry came in 1980 guys. I've been a fan since those early days. Their still music I listen to when driving. Have a look at Pictures of You. So much fantastic music from these guys. Cheers from OZ, Paul.😁📀👍❤️
This song was released in 1979 actually off their first album Three Imaginary Boys which is considered a post punk album..this is also likely their most popular song even till today. Your kids would probably love this song..for some reason it resonates and seems to relate with the youth of every generation..maybe because Robert smith was about 19 or 20 when it came out..but play them the original version from the album
Did anybody see Boomtown Rats in the Southampton Gaumont in 78 or maybe 79? For the life of me I can't remember the name of the support band but I want to say it was the Cure or Depeche Mode - but the amazing thing was the singer sung with his back to the audience for their whole set - and I remember thinking "they'll never amount to much" but then they went on to great success.
this song originally came out in 1979, but was remixed and re-released in 1986, when it became a hit. You definitely should check out "The Caterpillar" from the Cure next.
Robert Smith is 65, years old, can you freaking believe it? Damn, I started listening to the band in the 80's when he was still in his twenties, FFS. When people you watched on TV/movies and listened to over the radio records/tapes, CD's etc., get older, you know you're growing older right along with them and man does it (time) ever go by so fast!
Two more Cure songs for you: for Amber, “A Forest” is just right for staring into the distance with all the feels (but with a nice bass and beat throughout for Jay), and for Jay, “Primary” is upbeat and energizing (but still dark and moody for Amber). You guys listen to what we want, and we listen to you too! 😊
Earlier Cure when The Jam were their main competiton. Seventeen Seconds still my favorite album ❤ late 70s post punk, a favourite in student flats, 🎸🇬🇧
I never really got into The Cure, but around 1992-1993 I discovered their early stuff, and eventually got the Boys Don't Cry album, which was more of a compilation, and had many of the songs from their debut album Three Imaginary Boys. One of my favorites is "10:15 Saturday Night."
Yeah, this was their first song, so way before the 90's! You've gotta check out my favorite Cure song, In Between Days (Without You). Great, great song. Pictures of you is another good one too, that people have suggested.
Two of my favorite Cure songs are Charlotte Sometimes and A Forest, but you really can't go wrong with any of it. Whenever I think of the Cure I also think ofthe Smiths due to the rivalry between the two lead singers. I think they deserve another listen by you two. A few of my favorites are This Night Has Opened My Eyes, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, and Half a Person.
I saw The Cure at a massive festival at RFK stadium in D.C. when I was younger. They headlined along with The Offspring. Legends that they are, The Cure went on after Offspring, which I think intellectually was the right choice. Practically speaking, however, it was a huge mistake. The Offspring were super high energy, playing hit after hit after hit. They sprayed the audience down with a fire hose, which was welcome because it was July and HOT. It was a PARTY. People were dancing and loving life. Then The Cure came out. Suddenly, everything slowed waaaay down, and after a full day at the festival, it was thousands and thousands of people who were tired, wet, and listening to some of the most depressing music ever written. I'm still surprised 25 years later that they didn't single-handedly turn the festival into a Heaven's Gate-esque event.
Pictures of You, from 1989, Fascination Street from '89, Close To Me from '86, In Between Days from '85, The Love Cats from '84, Why Can't I Be You? from '87, and High from '92 are some can't-miss songs by The Cure to check out 👍.
The Cure was indeed a band ahead of their time, this was released in 1979, not the late 90's. If you want some more early Cure check out '3 imaginary boys' or '10:15 Saturday Night' from the same album. I highly recommend 'Pictures of You' for a react.
Great song. First heard around 1980. Got to see them a couple times in mid 80s. Ive always been more of a fan of there real early stuff. Same with Metallica and others. Being there and young and feeling the energy and excitement of a new band that you love right away, and their first couple albums embed them in your memories very strongly. After some years you dont follow them as close instead focusing on newer musical inspirations and the newer songs cant quite get that feeling of the earlier songs, those that make you feel young, like when the world was new
That song is from 1979! It was their first release! 🖤

Boys Don't Cry was released 1979!!! Even I'm shocked. I thought it was more mid-80s. It's when I first heard them traveling in Europe.
The Cure "High" 🔥 ❤️ 🔥
Happy Birthday Robert! 🎂
If you think late 90’s you have proved they were ahead of their time … this was released in 1979
Alternative music exploded in the 80's. Portishead's glory box or anything from their album Dummy
Have fun.
Gotta give Let’s Go To Bed a listen.
That's the first song I ever heard of their's and it's still my favorite.
Oh Yeah, forgot at that one! Yes, such a classic!
🖤🖤 The Cure. 🖤🖤 Enough said.
"Late 90s" LOL This is the second single from "Three Imaginary Boys", 1979 (but not included in the album). The Cure and Joy Division and a few other British bands fit the sound for future generations.
Yes, "Pictures of You" is definitely a must reaction.
The cure is known to have started the new wave genre, then followed new order, Erasure, Depeche mode.
One of my favorite band of all time. "Pictures of You" and "Plainsong" are my ultimate favorite.
Released in the late 70s & re-released around 1981. Other early songs to consider are:
1 GRINDING HALT
2 KILLING AN ARAB
3 JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S TRAIN
4 THE LOVE CATS
5 CLOSE TO ME
6 LET'S GO TO BED
Boys Don't Cry came in 1980 guys. I've been a fan since those early days. Their still music I listen to when driving.
Have a look at Pictures of You. So much fantastic music from these guys.
Cheers from OZ, Paul.😁📀👍❤️
Robert Smith is just EVERYTHING. We never miss seeing them. And he still sounds the same as he did then. And he just loves his fans.
Cure is the best at catchy hooks and riffs.
Never clicked a button so fast...love me some Cure!!!!!!
So many songs to react to by the Cure. A very large catalog. This is off of their first album THREE IMAGINARY BOYS in 1979.
"In-Between Days" is a must. I also love "Six Different Ways"
Absolutely love the album Head in the Door!
this song originally came out in 1979, but was remixed and re-released in 1986, when it became a hit.
Hi there @RobSquadReactions this song dates from 1979, so well ahead of the grunge sound of the 1990's.
This was from back in 1979. From what you have said you will love the vibe and video of "Close to me" unless you are claustrophobic!
If you're getting deeper into the Cure's catalog: I'd go with "Fascination Street" and "A Forest" (there's a great early 90's live performance).
1979. They did remix in about 1985 or 86. BTW, this is the remixed version.
Letter to Elyse , close to me, pictures of you, are all great ones for you to do by the cure
Pictures of you - the cure!
Love their sound, Boys Don't Cry, is my favorite.
Earlier Cure when The Jam were their main competiton. Seventeen Seconds still my favorite album ❤ late 70s post punk, a favourite in student flats, 🎸🇬🇧
The song is from 1979, and this is the new vocal version and video from 1986
I never really got into The Cure, but around 1992-1993 I discovered their early stuff, and eventually got the Boys Don't Cry album, which was more of a compilation, and had many of the songs from their debut album Three Imaginary Boys. One of my favorites is "10:15 Saturday Night."
This is early Cure, not the later stuff. And I like it! Do "Close To Me" next, please!!!!
Early Cure is better. The Top 40 stuff later was meh IMO, and Friday I'm In Love didn't do it for me.
I'm A 80s Kid and the Greatest Genaration of Music 🎶. I Love ❤ the Cure .😉🎶🎶👍❤️❤️❤️
Pictures of You, from 1989, Fascination Street from '89, Close To Me from '86, In Between Days from '85, The Love Cats from '84, Why Can't I Be You? from '87, and High from '92 are some can't-miss songs by The Cure to check out 👍.
Cure makes depression sound like happiness . I saw them live last year in Oslo . Great !
After some years you dont follow them as close instead focusing on newer musical inspirations and the newer songs cant quite get that feeling of the earlier songs, those that make you feel young, like when the world was new
Robert Smith looked 16, and that Zombie owith the red eyes dancing 7:53 wow. Good tune!
My favorite song by The Cure. React to Keane - Somewhere Only We Know. It is a very emotional topic.
