The Neverhood feels like going on a walk with friends while drunk and very happy, enjoying the scenery and weird stuff you see because you're drunk. Hylics feels like being high while alone at home in bed, wondering where your life is going but enjoying the moment as you stare at the strange shapes appearing on your ceiling.
Hylics lore is pure theory. At the beginning on Weird egg and crushing finger, Lindroth's giant hand crushed an egg from which a larvae was born, the larvae eventually evolves into unarmed people from which civilization was made, eventually the people evolves into the fork people which developted rivalry towards the unarmed people, the unarmed unable to do anything had to live being constantly attacked by forks, some of the forks further evolve into mages which turns fork people back to larvae, the constant war creates the ambulant skulls we see in hylics 1, this is the first planet. Technology eventually gets invented somewhere and in Lubally we see Television being a source of enterntaiment. In Asmosnos a yellow triangled head was sent into a different planet in the future to activate the doomsday device, this planet having the same looks as hylics 1 but mostly empty, explodes afterwards, the origin of the spaceship is unknown, this is the second planet. On beach comber we see The hand again when the guy searching for stuff uncovers an eye hiding a ladder underneath itself. The guy has two options, to use the raft to reach the bar and drink and dance, or go below the ladder and activate another Doomsday device which turns out to be a hand monster that destroys the world and the city which looks like any modern city from today, this is the third planet. From here if the guy drinks, thus saving the world one could think that the first planet from weird egg and crushing finger and the third planet from beach comber are the same and eventually before Asmosnos it turns into the Hylycs 1 world. The second planet which is empty could've been where the hand tried to create live but it failed thus moving to the first planet. Eventually when whatever of the worlds becomes hylics, which could be a separate fourth planet, Gibby decides that the world is full of nonsense and no meaning so he builds an artificial satellite "The moon" that unifies everyone into one "sensical union", now everyone being brainless slaves of Gibby's kingdom, Gibby gives the world a meaning by turning everyone into the same, this means the speak, the intelligence and logic, the boundaries of what is intelligence or not are completely different, so even tho they are dumb for us, the world may be "enlighted", people still have will and concious of their own. There are 3 main sages, Brains, Computer and Death, probably reffering to the ones that bring Conciousness and live, technology and death to the world, they grant Wayne their tokens throughout his journey. Wayne whos hobby may be growing veggies and was or not abusing chemical substances, may had realized something, no one knows how he woke up or realized that Gibby was a threat, maybe he thought out of nowhere "Imma go to the moon and snap" you know random choices without proper reasons to why. Maybe the sages. He grabs his life savings and climbs mount "name generated by artificial intelligence" to meet dedusmuln the ancient artifacts seeker, a green leech dressed in a suit who keeps talking about paper cups which is part of our modern world and probably from the same timeline as beach comber, Somsnosa whos hobby may be singing, already knew Wayne some how and forces Wayne and Dedusmuln to follow through a maze filled with ambulant skulls to retrieve her mighty gaunlets capable of turning bugs into might, eventually they beat pongorma the knight who was evil at the time, notice the sage of Death has nothing to do with the after life and such place is always shown as a beach. The crew reaches the moon by using a spaceship and defeats Gibby which sets the moon to explode when he dies. As the moon explodes we see the spaceship going back to the world as wayne is shown frozen on space like realizing something, the text generated by the AI says: So wayne spreading horribly adrift considers the stone below the noisome fate-ray Beside the engines, a season actualizes woozily or may their skeleton destroy below products So ends the tale of the cycloid vents who sought to levitate, for sort of crudely liquidfy'd their spreading ocean. After Gibby's death the events the accretion era ends due to the sages of brain computer and death dying and Gibby's Kingdom ending. Wayne probably becomes like a sage that people praise, build statues or something, he had all the tokens and meditates and morphs into his sage form "Old Wayne", he starts building an army of itself to defeat the reencarnation of gibby which he suspects may happen eventually, that explains the amount of Wayne clones snd larvae, now Dedusmuln found a sword he is overly attacked to and would rather snap, he also is now an explorer and wields a proper armour, Somsnosa founded her own Juice ranch and Pongorma became a well known Knight, he is surely using a helmet or Lindroth's redesign him to look different. There are 3 sages which are the lesser sages but still above Wayne. Monitors as probably TVs are outdated, Accretion as being responsible for the geological activity that changed the continents and Satellites maybe something related to stars and astral objects. Gibby gets revived by a Gibbylet probably his backup plan, and builds the HylemXylem and structure that uses the "World Juices" to materialize and make gibby the King once again, the HylemXylem throws the dumb waves once again and everyone but the sages and the crew who were standing underneath the HylemXylem becomes "enlighted" but yet Gibby dies anyways. The ending of Hylics 2 is super abstract and all this Theory lore could be so fake if Lindroth wants, is just such a good RPG.
I really like this connection between Lindroth's other games, makes me think of Edmund McMillen's intentional connections of his games. I also love the motive you thought up for Gibby and Wayne.

I have the same reaction, to the sequel as well. With how surreal and sometimes grotesque the world is, I can understand why some people might react more negatively to it. But for some reason I can't help but find it extremely chilled out. I think it helps how goofy the game is, and how laid back the attitude of Wayne's crew are. Also the fact that the game actually has no true fail state, even if you die you simply go to the afterlife which you can easily leave. It creates a feeling like there's no tension and it's all just playing pretend, the deformed clay world and creatures being evocative of a child messing around with their toys.
I adore everything about this game’s presentation. I logged into one of Vinny’s streams of Hylics 2 one night and got immediately enamored by how weird it all was. Clowns, pulsating flesh, scribbles, just perfect. This game is pretty obvious proof that video games are an art.
Genuinely my favorite play through of Hylics. The way Vinny reads the dialogue and reacts to the happenings is really hilarious in an understated way. It strangely suits the game

I hate to be the "actually" guy. But actually the dialogue is randomized each time you talk to any npc who calls for the random speech function. For you who used rpg maker, mason used common events to do this. I'm working on a translation for this game to brazilian portuguese, made me appreciate mason's work even more.

Experiencing Wayne’s strange journey and putting myself in his shoes helped me with the prospect of dealing with the arguably stranger concepts of adult life and college.
I can't decide which game is more surreal, Hylics 1 or 2. They have their own weirdness to them even though they're the same series. I enjoy both regardless. Thanks for the highlight video. I sadly missed the stream back in 2015.

Shot in the dark here but this game reminded me a lot of one I think Vinny played a while ago, would anyone recognize it? Most of what I can remember is that towards the end of the game you are told to meet the King, and you walk up a seemingly endless hallway, passing guards that at every interval will gush about the king, his abilities, etc and when you do find him it's a guy dancing or something like that. If anyone knows what I'm talking about the help would be appreciated
Holy FUCK I completely thought this was one of those surreal art-house games from the mid-90s, like the kind of stuff ThorHighHeels looks at. While I'm sure he would still love this game, I in no way thought this would be a game from 2015!! That's amazing, this COMPLETELY sells an obscure, strange 90s vibe.
I was honestly too scared to tune into these streams because the first time he stramed it I fell asleep to it and had a wicked nightmare. Anyways I can't watch this, but I am so in love with this games art style and movement.

Most of what I can remember is that towards the end of the game you are told to meet the King, and you walk up a seemingly endless hallway, passing guards that at every interval will gush about the king, his abilities, etc and when you do find him it's a guy dancing or something like that. If anyone knows what I'm talking about the help would be appreciated

Holy FUCK I completely thought this was one of those surreal art-house games from the mid-90s, like the kind of stuff ThorHighHeels looks at. While I'm sure he would still love this game, I in no way thought this would be a game from 2015!! That's amazing, this COMPLETELY sells an obscure, strange 90s vibe.
