The third verse has always gotten me. “I couldn’t believe what I saw/A hundred million bottles washed up on the shore/Seems I’m not alone in being alone/A hundred million castaways looking for a home.” I’ve never forgotten that kind of storytelling.

They either intentionally or unintentionally borrowed the theme from Tony Orlando and dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the old oak tree" with the surprise response to the call out (message in a bottle vs tie a yellow ribbon). It's a feel good ending to both songs.

" It seems I am not alone being alone" God I love the Police, I have been listening to them since 1980. They still were on my Spotify top 5 :) I would recommend "Every little thing she does is Magic" and Don't stand so Close to me" Sting is the Bass player btw. Love your reaction!

The Police were definitely huge in the 80s era. They sort of came out of what's called the British New wave, which was like in the late 70s and 80s, after punk first became a thing there and was influential on the scene, and then there was a lot of different stuff that was kind of a mix of punk, pop, reggae, and early electronic music, I guess. The drummer Stewart Copeland is American, but I think his mother is Scottish though, and he had been living over there and playing in different bands when they hooked up, and then after first getting some success, The Police migrated to the New York City scene, and I believe Sting has lived in New York ever since.

Great post. And I remember that Copeland's older brother - Miles Copeland - was the founder of I.R.S. Records - probably the coolest record label in the 80's (along with island records) - a lot of great artists on both labels.

6:31-Speaking of the drummer's energy, Copland's a human rubber band when he plays..fast, snappy, and crazy timing. He's been voted top 5 all time in many polls! As for Sting, he really has great bass chops..I see he always favored the Fender Jazz Precision model. He ain't a bad actor either--watched him play a crazy Dr. Victor Frankenstien ( The Bride, 1985) and a surly bar owner in a British gangster comedy from the same director of "Snatch". A good weekend to ya!

Sting can play just about anything with strings, piano, drums, and so much more. Sting does a fantastic ballad version of this song on the "Bring on the Night" documentary. Would love to see you react to that just because of how much of a different take it is to this version.
Love to see anything Police, or Sting solo. The "Bring on the Night" Album is some of Stings greatest stuff. And the Documentary with the same name is quite good too.

🇨🇦 Music written and recorded between 1959 and 1989 was the best new music ever, since the mid 1800's ! The reason that today's music cannot measure up is simply that music from that period was lively, happy, unique, creative and today's music is a mixture of controversy and anger, of words with no feeling, and Shouting for attention ! There are a few really talented artists today, but they are being drowned out by the attention seekers and the ego trippers ! 🇨🇦

"Look at the drummer....but listen what Andy plays over it. "Five seconnds of shiver" like Sting put it. 1979, their first UK # 1. The next was "Walking On The Moon" from the same album.
Not exactly teens, but energetic. Sting was 28, Stewart Copeland 27 and Andy Summers 38. Andy Summers was a seasoned veteran by that time having played professionally since 1965. Around 1978 they were laughed at in the UK being too old and trying to jump on to punk bandwagon and bility to really play was no help either. In the US they took the band as face value and the rest is history they had the last laugh. Please, react to "Bed's Too Big Without You" the mono version. It showcases well the band around 1979 - 1980.

The Police are one of those rare bands that never recorded a bad song. Ever. They did 5 albums, and every song had a reason and purpose. None of it was filler, none of it was product.

I prefer to listen to the studio version of a song first, so I hear all the instruments, lyrics and nuances. The true intent of the artist(s). Then I appreciate a well done live performance more. This is a fair song, not in the Police's top five. "Every little thing she does is Magic" is great.

Stuart is only hitting the chairs in the video. He plays the song on real drums. Sting has always played bass. The Police members were very high strung characters that sometimes got on each other's nerves like siblings would.

FYI, they are not playing that live. That is the studio version. That's how all official videos are done.

Lol, Bis 😂 really is too cute.
Her reactions to the music that I've listened to for all my life is so cute.
I can't even remember how I felt the first time I heard this song.
😂 I was probably listening to this song before Bis existed.
NB - They aren't actually playing the instruments (or drumming) in the music video. They're acting like in lipsync battles. They put the studio recorded audio over the video.

Here's what comedian Dana Carvey said about Sting: "Cause he's not Stung, and he's not Stinging, he's Sting." Love your reaction to an iconic band.
