It wasn't his bottle that washed up, it was all the other people that were alone sending bottles in return... So he realised he's not alone at being alone.
"Seems I'm not alone in being alone" ---- shared situation. We're all lost.
I interpreted it this way as well. Also saw it as the fans singing the song back to him in concert.

I think it’s that the bottles were other ppl that happened to feel alone as well. Not that they sent them to him. The messages just happened upon his shore. Basically saying that he realized that ppl from all walks and situations feel alone too

Sting - the lead singer - plays the bass. I love the bass and drums in this song! Stewart Copeland - the drummer - is one of the most badass drummers ever. You can feel his love for reggae and his jazz training all in one. 💕👍

Spot on. So Underrated.
I'm a big fan of Copeland. I really had to hold back; when I met him years later. I was living in Las Vegas, and working at the Fashion Show mall, now known as the Primm Outlets, in Primm NV. Copeland was living in Vegas at the time. So one day; he came down to the Stateline to shop are the outlets. Everyone else I knew; said what a jerk he was, but I found him a lovely person. However; I treated him like any other customer, everyone everyone else treated him like the Super Star he is. So I got a smile, and Thank you very much, while everyone one else, got nothing.
I'm sure there will bet those who want to know what proof I have, but why make up a story like that. A simple exchange between customer and story employee; just the customer happened to be one of the greatest drummers who ever lived. It's not like it was someone overly glamorous; or anything. So why lie?

@@ericwillison4011 Is he though? I think most musicians - especially drummers - know how great he is. He's up there with Jeff Porcaro, Neil Peart, Carter Beauford, Bernard Purdie, and Hal Blaine, among other greats.

Andy Summers is such an underrated guitarist. He comes up with such melodic chords and creative voicings that he should have been given more credit with developing The Police “sound.” They worked so well together to produce quality songs.
If anybody wants to play the guitar part of this song, better do some hand calisthenics beforehand 🙃

Sting wrote the basic guitar parts , including the "stretchy" chords but Summers developed the instantly recognisable guitar sound.

Amber...after he sees a hundred million bottles washed up on the shore, he says, "Seems I'm not alone in being alone." The bottles are from other people who feel the same way, so the song is a little uplifting reminding us that others feel the same, so maybe we aren't alone after all.
They never listen close enough to the lyrics so they either never get it or don't care they have become more and more phony

@@sparkyth67 Quite the opposite. Usually they are spot on with the meaning or lyrics, or least want to learn more. I'm always amazed at how accurate Amber is with the feeling and meaning, while Jay picks out the instruments he hears. I find them very authentic and sweet!

Sting is one of the best frontmen in music history, hands down. Great musician, GREAT lyricist. I hope you check out more of his solo stuff, but for more Police jams, try "King of Pain", "Demolition Man", "Spirits in the Material Worlds", "Walking On the Moon", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", and "Don't Stand So Close To Me". Saw them live once... Stewart Copeland is a vastly underrated drummer, and it wouldn't be complete without Andy Summers' wonderful guitar playing.

Stewart copeland is an amazing drummer! I believe the late Taylor hawkins was greatly influenced by him! I used to air drum along to stewart's playing esp on every little thing and bed's too big without you.
Stewart Copeland is not underrated! He is is in the Hall Of Fame.. he’s in the Drummer Happ Of Fame.. and is mentioned constantly as one of the
greats.
Stewart Copeland is one hell of a drummer. But I wouldn't call him underrated.
If anyone is underrated in The Police, it is Sting as a bass player. Everyone knows him so well as the lead singer and composer of all of their hits, as well as his own solo career, but his bass work tends to get overshadowed.

I received a Walkman as a gift in 1984 (trust me, it was a big deal back then). The very first cassette I got was The Police "Synchronicity" and it was eye opening. I immediately went out and bought their first two LP's, "Outlandos D'Amour" and "Reggatta De Blanc." The opening song on "Reggatta De Blanc" is "Message in a Bottle." Talk about leading off strong and making me want to hear more!
Too funny. I got a Toshiba personal cassette player in 1984. Bought the same Police cassette as you for a first purchase.
Synchronicity is in my top albums of all time list.
This was also my first normal album on cassette. I did have a couple of K-Tel compilation albums first. I did not get my Walkman until '85 though.

Funny how, younger generations have no idea how huge this band was. Just a powerhouse - 5 brilliant albums filled with hits, in such a short run, then Sting going on to have a great solo career.

I’ll say it again and again and again. Stewart Copland is such a great drummer So interesting in his approach & with his Latin/ Jazz touch So cool and a huge influence on me as a drummer way way way back in my High School days. Lol. Thanks guys.
Quite versatile as well. Even though I had heard it so many times, I didn’t realize the theme for the TV show _The Equalizer_ was by the great Stewart Copeland until years after the show’s run had ended.
Me, too. My first kit was a black Tama six-piece, largely because of him. Stewart Copeland’s cymbal work is so distinctive Peter Gabriel had him play high hats on “Red Rain” on the “So” album. Not drum set, just hats. And you can tell within two seconds after the song starts it’s him. Amazing.
I didn’t know he did that on those albums. I’m going to give it a listen. Tama is a great kit, I was dumb enough to get rid of my early 60s Ludwig I was playing for a shiny new Guitar Center special Pearl kit. Not a very wise move Ha! Still have it though along with a Roland. Keep playing bud.
@@0okamino Copeland's involvement was one of the reasons why I started watching The Equalizer when it came out. That was a show that did things differently from every other "private eye" show, and that's what made it so great. As far as I know, Stewart Copeland composed the music for all but two episodes. (The recent movie versions, however well-made they may be, missed the point of the show IMO.)

They had such a unique sound, much to do with Stings voice, but also being a three piece, each of the instruments stand out. Such a cool sound that just instantly transports you back in time.

I have always enjoyed the uniqueness of Sting both his voice and his writing. He is the bass player as well.
He played one of the key roles in the movie Dune, and did a fantastic job. You all might want to check that movie out for one of your movie reviews. It was very true to the outstanding novel of the same name.

The Police were a supergroup....Sting on Bass.... Stewart Copeland known as one of the most innovative drummer's ever., Andy Summers on guitar and created the "police sound".
Epic song about loneliness written by their singer/songwriter Sting. He did a really poignant version of this song after he went solo, just him playing an acoustic, no lights except one spotlight, on topic in front of 20,000+ adoring fans. The irony was something to behold. Amazing band with one of the best drummers of all time. Lucky enough to see them in '84 and Sting solo before the Pandemic, in which he played a bunch of early Police tracks. You guys must check out 'Walking on the Moon.' Cheers!

The guy playing the bass is the lead singer, Sting, who you've reacted to before. His solo career has spanned decades. Brilliant songwriter and performer and I can't wait to see him live again in a few weeks!
"Wrapped Around your finger", "Synchronicity II" , "Secret Journey ", "Tea in the Sahara" all fantastic songs by the Police they have a great catalog for you to hear.
This song is very near and dear to me. This is the first Police song I ever heard. When I was learning to play the drums I’m middle school, this song came on the radio one day while my dad was taking me to school. He told me to listen to the high hat and the snare. It got me so excited to want to learn to be a better performer. Stewart Copeland is one of my all time favorite drummer and this song really shows his level of talent.

Oh the Police, they make me almost cry...it is just beautiful. At the same time, they make you want to jump up and dance. The sound is unlike any other. They were so lovely. The rhythms are incredibly beautiful. I love them. I saw them just once. Oingo Boingo opened the show. Years later I saw Sting and he was great of course. This song, like Roxanne, Don't Stand So Close and countless others, play out almost like a movie. Every song is a fully emotional experience. I have so much respect for The Police. Mr. Copeland is one of my favorite drummers of all time.
This is the first song I heard by the Police and I was an instant fan. Love the lyrics. Now decades later, lead singer Sting has a long storied solo career, with tons of really superb songs. The other two also have long solo careers with much success.

One of my favorite things about The Police is that Reggae influence you can here. I feel like with this song you really hear it. As a kid listening to them I didn't really know but coming back as an adult man I just forget how awesome they really were.

In my top 5 Police Songs of all time as far as favorites go. Sting had as many hits outside his run in The Police as he did solo for me. Was a treat to see you all enjoy another classic
Love when he finds all those bottles on the shore and the lyric goes “Seems I’m not alone in being alone” Hits harder now than it did to me back in the 80’s.
Check out Sting's solo version of this from "The Secret Policemen's Other Ball." It was 1982 so the quality isn't perfect but it's such an awesome performance and arrangement that it almost seems like another song.

By far their best. The song Sychronicty. Side 2 of the original album is one of my favourites.
1983-84 they were the biggest band in the world.
A hidden Sting gem: I don't know if you have reacted to "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits, but Sting is singing "I want my MTV" or "Money for nothing and chicks for free" in the background throughout the song. He really adds another level to it as that video was probably the defining MTV video of its time. They played the heck out of it. It was like the network anthem.
Sting also played an awesome villain in the original movie "Dune".
Sting also harmonized with Mark's vocals.
Interesting side note, the "I want my MTV" verse is a slowed down version, note for note, of the chorus "Don't stand so close to me."

That slap bass method you were talking about was invented by Larry Graham who was the bass player for Sly & the Family Stone. I believe you've only done them once, and they have tons of great songs. Hope you can get back to them soon.

I was fortunate to see The Police on the Ghost in the Machine tour in 1982. It was fantastic. So many great tracks.
The movie with Kevin Costner and Robin Wright is awesome and emotional. The song is amazing 👏
The singer is Sting, who you heard sing "Fields of Gold". He became famous with The Police and wrote most of their most famous songs. Check out "The Bed's Too Big Without You," a song from the same album as this one. Really great bluesy vibes. Also: Oh no, honey, that's not what happened. He threw out his bottle hoping someone would respond, and watched and watched - and one day, he did get a response, a hundred billion of them from people just like him. Lonely, shipwrecked, and longing to reach out. The island is a metaphor for the social isolation we feel in the modern world, which was already a big problem back in the early 80's when this song came out. It's only gotten more fitting as the years have gone by, all those people wishing they could connect with a real human soul.
This was their first single from their second album, "Reggatta De blanc", White Reggae.
The song was a metaphor for being lonely and realising there are lots of people struggling too. This was the last song they played in 1986, before breaking up. 'bout time you got to this Police song! I think it is in the top three to five greatest police songs. It really shows off what was so great about this band. Fabulous rhythm section; and Jay, there is actually a lot more guitar work in this song than you realize - providing tons of atmosphere. They are one of the bands that I really regret never seeing live.
I agree this one Every Little Thing She does is Magic are my two favorites. Then there is a very long list of ties for #3.

No, his bottle didn't come back. It was 100 million bottles from other people who were also alone and sending messages in bottles for help. He is not alone in being alone... it is a message about so many lonely people in the world desperately searching.

Hey, you've no idea how huge The Police were in the early 1980s. They were like The Beatles for a couple of years. And Message In a Bottle is a perfect tune, absolutely incredible.

I was born in 1974. Thus i grew up on eighties music. The Police especially is one of those artists that transport me to the eighties especially from 80 to 84 . That's the period of the eighties that is my favorite. The Police just create a mood or ambiance in their music.
The Police are 1 of my favorite bands. They're the best 3 piece band IMO. Sting is on bass, & a successful solo artist. Andy Summers on guitar is so underrated. Stewart Copeland on drums, a classically trained musician with incredible talent. Their mix of rock, reggae, blues & new wave is like no other band. I fell in love in 1978 with the album Outlandos d'Amour. Then in 1979 was Reggatta de Blanc, 1980 was Zenyatta Mondatta. In 1983 was Synchronicity with the "every breath you take" track & their most successful. I saw them in 1982, & again on their last tour in 2007. Thank you for the joy! 😀

The Police are one of my all time favorites. The singer/bass player is Sting who also writes just about every song they've done.
He's got some great solo stuff you should check out.
Got to see the Police twice before the break up & then the reunion show. Got to see Sting solo four times also. Always a great show with or without the Police.

I was a kid in the 80’s and remember all of the police songs from MTV…too young to buy albums etc…so nostalgic!
I was 6 years old when this came out. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing it. For some odd reason it made sense then. I loved it!
I LOVE the Police -- I went to several of their concerts back in the day and saw Sting several times after the Police went their separate ways -- A lot of really good tunes yet to listen to -- and what is surprising about their work is you might find a song like this is good but not great but then you hear it again and it really grows on you every time you listen -- Other tunes like that are Bring on the Night -- Invisible Sun -- Man in a Suitcase -- Demolition Man -- The Beds Too Big Without You -- I always enjoyed Shadows in the Rain and how it warps into the instrumental The Other Way of Stopping ---

That's the magic of the Sting bass... great bass lines, but simple... it's simple to play once it exists, but difficult to create, to put the right notes in the right places...

Note since you mentioned “slap bass”- If you haven’t yet, Level 42 is a must. Mark is one of the greatest and had some huge 80s charters. Something About You, Lessons in Love…
All these years later, and I still cannot think of another band that sounds like this. Like three different types of songs in one.
So fun to see a young Sting again. We were all that young back then. I remember dancing to this in my livingroom having a blast. I love the more mature Sting and the more mature me now, but that time when I had so much extra energy I miss very fondly. If you are doing The Police I would request Wrapped Around Your Finger or Mind Police and if you are doing Sting solo I would request Englishman in New York or Desert Rose.
My little brother was an excellent bassist, and could slap with ease. He made himself a thumb ring, out of a thick rubber band, and it sounded great!
You forget just what an astounding voice Sting has.
The guitar riff in this is surprisingly hard. Andy Summers left hand must be super flexible...
They're a rabbit hole... great band. The album Synchronicity is the magnum opus. "Murder by Numbers", "Tea in the Sahara" , "Synchronicity II" ... all good songs to react to .

The Police with Sting are EPIC!!! Sting was in the cult classic 'Dune' as an actor and the rock band Toto did the soundtrack. BTW - Toto's great hit was 'Africa'. I remember you saying that you like solos (guitar(s)). I grew up in the 70s and 80s and one of the best solos ever, and there a lots of them, was Lynrd Skynrd's 'Freebird' recorded live in London. When you hear it, remember me - LOL.

the bass player/ singer was named Gordon Sumner but he went by the name Sting. Previous to this band he was a jazz singer. my fave song is Synchronicity 2. I had a band back in the 1990s and we covered that song.
Several years ago, Sting came to play a show for a concert series at the botanical gardens in town. Fairly large gardens with an amphitheater and a very popular summer concert series that attracts well-known artists. Friend of mine worked at The Body Shop at the mall and was shocked to see him walk in the morning of the show, just after the store opened, to buy some toiletries. This song was playing when she waited on him and after she gave him his bag, he just smiled at her and said, “Good song! “ and left. She of course had to call me immediately and inform me Sting had shopped in her store, and to his own music no less 😂
ETA: I believe Sting is the one playing bass. Also, I didn’t know you were learning bass, Jay! How exciting! When I was a music major, I played most of the main stringed instruments, including guitar, and the only one I didn’t learn was bass. (And harp, I guess lol) So I am both impressed and a little jealous 😊
Favorite band, closely seconded by the Beatles. I grew up in the 80s. I got to see them on the reunion tour and they still have it. This is my favorite of their hits. I even covered this with my one man and sequencer band 15 years ago. Programming the drums note for note really opened my eyes to the genius of Stewart Copeland.
Sting/Police was my life growing up in the 80s. Dad playing records...having a BBQ with all of my parent's friends and the Police/Sting, INXS, Depeche Mode, Stevie Wonder, Rolling Stones songs playing all day. The good old days.

Can't go wrong with the Police, such an iconic band. Suggestions from Sting's solo career: If You Love Somebody (Set Them Free), Fragile, and Desert Rose are three of my favorites from him.

Saw them at Madison Sq Garden in 80's . I been to many, many concerts thru the yrs at all kinds of major venues.. this particular concert was probably one of the most electrically charged I'd been to!
I was at that gig. It was late 1979 (I was 21) at the Lyceum Ballroom, The Strand, London. It was one of the first times they performed "Message In Bottle"...
The Police first played this on 21st February 1979 at The Hatfield Polytechnic - televised by the BBC in their series Rock Goes To College.There's a glimpse of my 21 year old self from nearly 44 years ago! Unfortunately I was in double denim! Whole concert (about 40 mins) available on TH-cam.
