- What makes Akira Toriyama's Son Goku such an iconic anime character. How even today decades after the original serialisation of the Dragon Ball manga, Goku is still such a unique and endearing protagonists even when compared to modern day popular characters like Gojo, Saitama Luffy and Naruto.

Hey guys, sorry this upload took so long. Can you believe I wanted to release this on Toriyama’s birthday!? But I decided I wanted to make this video the best it could be to really pay my respects to Akira Toriyama and his creation.

Dragon Ball brought the conquest of strength to Shonen, leading to later manga giving their MC’s specific reasons to become stronger. Dragon Ball truly did walk so that later Shonen manga could run.
And then the big 3 solidified 3 of the main motivations to obtain power. Naruto seeks power to become an important figure, Luffy seeks power to overcome setbacks on his adventure and Ichigo seeks power to save friends.
Of course there is overlaps like Luffy also wants to keep his friends safe and Naruto wants to "rescue" Sasuke, but the point remains.

Saving it from himself 😅 he is the reason oolong became a gag character instead of a pig demon warrior and made the story deviate so much from Journey to the West.
He is also the reason why Goku didn't marry Bulma after all, despite being the obvious choice and based on a Chinese opera interpretation of the Sun Wukong myth that portrayed the monk freeing him as a woman.

In all seriousness, this was a great way to pay tribute to him. May he rest in peace and continue to live in our hearts eternally.
So long as we remember him, he'll live on that way and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
His influence is still strong, despite leaving the world.

The amount of media inspired by DB is just beautiful. And the amount that isn't from anime media is just as big too.
Stop saying understatements, he changed the landscape of all manga
@@ididntaskverified3663That's a very vague statement. If you mean how people internationally view manga then yeah. But there's plenty of manga that aren't inspired by Dragonball
@@Ash_Wen-liYes and no. Most manga aren't _directly_ influenced by Dragon Ball, but it's akin to something like Shakespeare (though of course not as extreme). I doubt most writers think "I should incorporate this element from Midsummer Night's Dream" or anything like that, but DB did change the landscape of the media of manga.
@TheUnderscore_ of battle manga then the answer is mostly yes,any other genre then the answer will be mostly no
@@desmondgovender3142The answer is yes. No matter what genre. Whether or not you like Dragon Ball, it's influenced literally every manga post 1990.
Again, Shakespeare analogy. Do you believe Shakespeare's plays had no influence on, say, Marvel? Marvel's a "battle" comic series, but Shakespeare's so prominent that it undoubtedly affected the ideas of Stan Lee and outcome that is Marvel.
The same goes for Dragon Ball. What about Bocchi the Rock, that directly referenced SSJ? That's not a "battle" anime, but if something _at all_ directly references something else, it was influenced-directly or not.

Ya know to me if feels like DBZ was a series that inspired a new generation of mangaka while DBS was Toriyama being inspired by the new generation of mangaka.
DBS is a cashgrab. Toriyama really only to write the movies BoG/RoF which predate Super
@@FirstNameLastName-mn9szIt’s RF not RoF
@@FirstNameLastName-mn9sz And to add, those movies, RoF at least, was inspired by a song. F by Maximum The Hormone, song is basically a metal ode to Frieza as a character. Toriyama heard them live and got the idea to bring Frieza back and the rest you've already seen
@@FirstNameLastName-mn9szDBS is the only reason people care or talk about Dragon ball today.
I really wish the nostalgia glasses crowd could admit this fact even if they can't admit anything else.
This franchise was past tense before DBS.
@@leonfrancis3418 It really wasn't. People were talking about Dragon Ball on the internet and in groups before 2014. That's why the IP got a live action movie to begin with. It never slowed down, Super just brought it new content. It isn't even nostalgia it's just blatant fact.
"Are you Goku because you're strong? Or are you strong because you're Goku?"

Creating another Goku would be like creating another Superman. Their continued legacies have paved the way for so much that it's simply unthinkable.
Goku is very much the epitomy of "Stronger than you were yesterday, weaker than you'll be tomorrow".
I think I also heard Toriyama took inspiration from Dragon Ball GT for Daima, as he's stated to absolutely LOVE GT.

Everyone who doesn't like dragon ball doesn't know what they are talking about, the hype is unmatched, anyone can write what Toriyama wrote let's be honest, but when Toriyama does something it's like magic, it's hype and takes the world by storm every time. The GOAT, rip
A big part was how DYNAMIC everything was, a skill he honed as a gag mangaka where you need a really good understanding of your characters' proportions to squash, stretch, and otherwise mess with them for your jokes.
Love how its right before my bday, also a quote from Baki "someone who works hard can never beat someone who enjoys himself" I think perfectly describes Goku and why his mindset towards self improvement in my opinion is one that I think is perfect. He enjoys what he does so much and only seeks to be better than himself before, theoretically his ability to improve is almost boundless and its something that really speaks to me. Imagining future versions of myself who are so much stronger is a thrilling journey I wanna uncover and so far I've been successful and its this mindset that keeps me going.
On a side note I think the reason Super has been so jarring is cause we saw Goku's journey through self discovery from his love for fighting, his heritage, to then finding a successor but now we go back to him relearning things he probably already does on his own to perfect his own technique. Its honestly just disappointing if anything because to me he represents the ideal Martial Artist and yet in Super he completely stops meditating and needs Whis to teach basics he learned even as far back as when he was a kid. Goku in Z would always advocate for healthy habits like focusing on fundamentals and meditation like when he mastered SSJ1 in order to be more in tuned with his body or when he was meditating in other world during the 7 years which probably helped him reach SSJ3 because of how intense and explosive the form is which probably requires an insane amount of focus.

You know it is a redemption arc when Dragon Quest 3 and 11's world traversal theme starts playing, the chills are real. Goku (and also Gohan)to me are the two biggest inspirations in fiction for overcoming hardships, weather it is fear, difficult times or tasks. since although Gohan didn't become a main character, his entire arc through Z was overcoming the biggest fears and hardships he could've possibly faced and becoming more brave as seen in the fight with Recoome, which reminds me of how Goku overcame every hardship he faced, to become better, to improve yourself. They show me how much caring for your family and friends is important. They teach me to never give up.
This was an amazing video, Goku is a lot deeper than we originally thought. I like your point on how Goku is a Saiyan who refuses to be just like the other Saiyans
As a martial artist, he fights not to truly defeat others but to actually defeat himself.
#BARZ!!!
just as the title of this video says "there will never be another son goku" there will INDEED never be a another son goku he is literally one of the most iconic faces of shonen i 💯 agree
Thank you. Even with Goku's regression in Super, he always makes sure to take the step forward and do his best and get stronger from it. It's why he's my favorite hero. He used to be tied with another character, but lately, I realized that everything about Goku, even his goofy personality, is something that is endearing.
Akira Toriyama created a MASTERPIECE that will live forever and inspire future generations of people who learns about this serie. Even today, many famous bestselling mangas and others are inspired by Dragon Ball.
RIP Akira Toriyama, we will never forget you! 😢🫡
Ive seen this show turn people who wouldve never drew anything into complete artists live. I grew up with many friends like this. Toriyamas work is infinitely inspiring
There will only be one, Son Goku!
From the first time I read the manga and watched GT back in '96, Goku became the character who inspired me for the remainder of my life; there has not been a time since nor will there be to my death a time that Son Gokū is not a great inspiration to me, and I will long lament not being able to thank Toriyama during his lifetime or mine for all he unknowingly did for me.
An hour long video about SSJ?!
Let’s see if you get it out before Sparking Zero comes out 😂
Great video as always!
If I find the Hyperbolic Time Chamber I can make it happen! 🔥😂
This is *exactly* what a video essay is supposed to be. You caught my attention with an intriguing title and thumbnail, captivated me with engaging dialogue and visuals, and left me wishing there was more to watch at the end.
...an important thing to point out is the massive impact that Goku has left on the entire world's zeitgeist. It's a global impact on the same level as superman or coca-cola in terms of reach. Children, young men, and adults from all over the world, probably from every single country, know and love Goku. They are impacted by his ideals and philosophy and the whole world is a better place because of it. It really is that important.
Honestly, whilst this is a great video, there really won't be another Son Goku. Truly an inspiration.
Dude dropping knowledge like a tombstone piledriver. Two thumbs up, CAGE. :)
That's how we do it bro, facts and nothing else (maybe some yapping too) 😂🔥
Love seeing the uploads from you my guy!
I appreciate that bro! 🔥🔥
This is an amazing tribute and breakdown of the character, and your editing is both interesting and entertaining.
It's interesting how Son Goku's philosophy - "I want to get stronger" - is contrasted by Vegeta, who wants to PROVE that he is the strongest. As you pointed out, Goku is always trying to be stronger than he was the moment before. He's always interested in fighting, and struggles largely as a narrative convenience. (There's no REASON the power difference between him and a foe has to be so great, except because it's entertaining.) He doesn't have the 'Vegeta letting Cell absorb 18' level of hubris, but he's not flawless here either; he tends to be overconfident in the goodness of others. He is simple, but the complexity of the world around him makes that simplicity memorable and endearing.
Damn the king died at 69 what a legend
LITERALLY!!! I LOVE DRAGON BALL I LOVE TORIYAMA AND I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!
That's what makes DB so fun, is watching how the world scales and builds to push Goku farther.
Pilaf was a bit of a joke, so enter Red Ribbon and Mercenary Tao. Goku pshes himself to best Tien, only for Piccalo to show up and start blowing up cities.
Then DBZ he has to train with King Kai just to stand a chance with Vegeta, who we learn is trying to defeat Frieza.
And on word from that point Goku and team have to train to fight world ending monsters.
Every step of the way is Goku pushing himself further and further, as Toriyama does everything he can to find him a new challenge to overcome.
I don't care about power and strength anymore.
I care about story telling.. Dragon Ball Story Telling is simple yet I love it so much that I'd watch Saiyan Saga and Namek saga countless times.
Modern authros create powerful characters
Akira Sensei Created our childhood
I had anger issues. But goku taught me I don't have to use my rage to hurt people. I can use my rage to get stronger
The story telling and comedy is what makes Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball to me. It's also why I prefer the original Dragon Ball the most, I have the most fun watching them. The fights are just extra to me, they're fun too but not the reason I read or watch.
I remember watching DBZ for the first time when I was 10 years old, the channel I saw it on started with the Z fighters fighting Nappa, and then for some reason (I think because the dub was still in production) the series restarted with the arrival of raditz, and when through the series again until the last part I saw it, when ONE more episode was released, and then they restarted the series from raditz again. I remember tuning in every episode anyway because it was so awesome! ah, what an era we live in, to see all of hollywood aging out, and iconic animes reaching their end as well.
Great job man. This made me cry.
Thanks a lot bro, I'm glad this video touched you, it means I did a good job.
The Namek Saga is one of the best arks in all of anime history. I have rewatched that ark so many times. It also contsibs the most iconic power up/transformation/level up in anime history and actually inspired power ups in other animes.
God bless Akira Toriyama.. ...doesnt matter how much latent power Gohan has or how Badass Vegeta is there's only one Goku no comparison

Goku is the face of shonen and toriyama was the man that made the magic. Goku is a man to almost make himself better then he was today then yesterday, there’s a reason why he’s probably who a lot of people picture when wanting to get stronger or just having a workout in general because goku is always looking for self improvement. He’s truly a great character and genuine role model his carefreeness gentle soul but incredibly determined attitude is how he drives people. Goku and by extension toriyama not only created the greatest legacy and legend in manga history he helped shape and mold a lot of people’s way of living, and toriyama’s death is still not hitting yet I just don’t want to believe it as it’s so unbelievable the man the legend Akira Toriyama dying is so impossible in my brain.
The first part of dragon ball is possibly my favourite. The original hunt for the dragon balls, Red Ribbon, the training and the tournaments were all brilliant
If there was one thing I would have loved to see, is a Dragonball franchise that kept Goku as he originally was.
The funimation dub not only made him into more of a western super hero archetype, but it also influenced future character development.
Goku is truly an icon, dedicating himself to getting stronger! His one dream is to be more powerful by his own hands and he'll work to achieve that no matter what, Toriyama is the GOAT
P.S. Saitama does win, hes mutliversal being level, nothing Goku can do against that

people don't understand how deep goku is, no character is more ANGRY having to "share" his fights more then goku, yet he ALWAYS gives up on his pride in order to save the world, yes he sometimes put the world in danger because of this pride, but in the end he always gives up and let his friends helps him, because protecting the inocents is even more important then becoming stronger by fighting on his own.

That image of Goku with Luffy's face is INCREDIBLY unsettling
"Hey, it's me, Goku!"
12:34 I’ve seen the left panel several times in anime form, but seeing the manga panel and the sorrow on Goku’s face, like he regrets having to kill another soul, speaks volumes about the kind of character Goku is
Luffy was always a looney tunes character, that’s the beauty of Gear 5. I love Goku too, but I can’t let my boy Luffy catch strays like that
To be fair I never said that was a bad thing, Luffy is one of my favourite anime protagonists! 😂😅
i LOVE dragon ball for this exact reason. and the struggle goku as a whole is why i love it so much. illustrated best in vegeta's monologue.
My most favorite line in DBZ was Vegeta's monologue
"Up till now, I fought to make things my way, for the thrill of it, to KILL my opponents, and for my pride. But kakarrot, you were different. You don't fight to win... to never ever lose, to break beyond your limits, THAT is why you fight. "
the character that is goku is not a superman, is not a super hero, is not a shounen protagonist of righteousness. It's the story of a battle maniac who just so happens to save the world occasionally,
Great video on Goku. Goku has always been such a great protagonist because not just because how he pushes the plot forward, but also how his intentions are always motivated by similar things. His will to fight more and more powerful opponents to get himself stronger and his love of his friends and family showing how much he trusts them. Goku is getting to the point where he has very little to learn form anyone thanks to how long his journey has gone on and the fact that he is so much older than the vast majority of shounen protagonists.
I would also love to see a video on how you'd change up how god ki in Dragon Ball Super. The first BoG movie is fine but I'd love to see how you'd change it to make it more different from normal ki. One instance I do like is the technique Goku used in Broly where he stunned Broly using a technique not seen since that movie
It's funny years ago, I wanted to make an entire video about how much I liked Goku's God Bind technique in DBS Broly, maybe I'll revisit the idea 🤔
