I literally just purchased a pair of these mics right before you uploaded this video. I was so amazed by the OC818's capabilities after writing a paper on their specs for class. This video just made me even more excited to get my hands on them. Love how informative and educational your videos are!

@@dylanbarber6899 Out of curiosity, have you been able to test the mic without using the included shockmount? I remember the CEO of Austrian Audio mentioning their open-acoustic system was designed to have the capsule suspended inside the housing with an internal silicone mount.
414’s are hard to beat. They are the Swiss Army knives of mics. Any one looking great mics at affordable price should check out Advanced Audio. Our recording class recently did a blind A/B their CM47 against a Neumann 47. The majority of the class chose the Advanced Audio. Amazing quality that’s affordable.
I was experimenting with inverting all of this - i made a loudspeaker that can emit stereo in these patterns. The latest one is capable of ambisonic... sadly, i've left it all unfinished because i had to leave my home in russia....
Great vid. It could probably be better if you concluded the video with comparisons of all the recordings immediately after one another with a label reminding the viewers which kind of set up it is. That would be better for listening for differences and...you might get more money for a longer vid?

Is there a benefit to using a stereo mic such as an AEA R88 and say, a mono Earthworks SV33 dynamic mic in a mid-side setup? So, using a stereo mic instead of the figure of 8 mic usually used in mid side?
Have you ever compared Austrian Audio OC818 to AKG C414 XLS? A few people recommended AKG C414 XLS for recording an accordion - I even found AKG C414 XLS listed on some accordion forums as the mic to go for accordion recording. Since my primary interest is recording an accordion, I was thinking of getting a pair of C414 XLS (stereo setup) and C 516 ML for extra bass covering (recording left hand - bass side is a little bit tricky + I like darker, bass sound) But then I found about Austrian Audio OC818 which is well praised on every video I watched, but it seems to me that they are very similar. Even the price is around the same. Are there any noticeable differences? AKG C414 XLS is a well-known, legendary mic. On the other hand, OC818 designed people who initially worked for AKG. Currently, I am leaning more towards OC818 (primarily because of various subjective reasons). If you had chance to test them both, a few words about the difference between these two would be very interesting :) Great and helpful video BTW ;) Especialy if I get a pair of OC818-s :D
I’ve used the C414 XLS many times - that’s also a great-sounding mic. I’d personally go with the OC818 though. The sound is smoother in the high mids (if my memory serves me) with the OC818. Also, the OC818 has dual output!
Apologies for the silly question, but I've always wondered why you need to flip the phase on one of the sides when doing Mid-Sid. Is it just so that they disappear when summed to mono leaving only the mid channel?

what if I want to record 4 microphones simultaneously? e.g., one microphone on front left and right of my car and simultaneously rear left and right of the car. Then either all 4 recorded ... OR... maybe 3D audio. And, if I use 4 mics to make a 3D audio recording of me driving, do I need a special recording device to do that.?
i could hear very little diff between the psuedo stereo and true stereo you did. I am wondering, do i need to get a pair of these or one will be enough, which will also need just 2 preamps. I want to do stereo recordings of the source as well as mono.

Am I crazy ... or these recording are quite boomy and have phasing issues .... no offence meant. Hats down for the video. Anyway a pair of CC8-s should be much better, no matter the higher self noise (16 dB).
Honestly overpriced, you can get the same effects for getting cheaper ones, it's more about you being able to work in the audio editor with phase and effects ngl
Thanks, Dane. It is definitely a big investment! If you just like the sound and don’t need the dual-capsule functionality, you can go with the OC18 for around $765-$850. Still not cheap by any means, but a big difference from $1250!

The sides won’t totally cancel when summed to mono if the side channels aren’t equal.

I usually leave them hard-panned to avoid cancellation in stereo.

In spaced pair do you use 3:1 rule?
Not necessarily, as the stereo image is often the goal, rather than separation.
would this work with 2 exact same ordinary mics in the same setup in cardioid mode?
You can do XY, ORTF, and a spaced pair with ordinary cardioid mics. Let us know how it sounds! Thanks for watching.
