Lyrics So I heard it from a friend That there was this guy that I should talk to So you let me in Opened doors underneath a crucifix statue So I explained to you I was having troubles getting through And I was thinking of my end It was just the sky I kept looking to You said "I'm on your side" I thanked you and I cried I almost died I was making strides I was showing up every Sunday But I was still confused About the pain that had invaded me And I'm still wondering If my souls worth it's money back You assured me That the congregation would hear me They said "we're on your side, There's an unconditional kingdom That stands up high And let's all believers in Through the forgiveness of sins" So I explained to you what was the cause of my suffering See it was a while ago There was an alleyway And there was a group of them When they hurt me They whispered that the gays had to pay When they beat me All of my worth was taken away See I needed you And you know one of the lords the way through And I was unfolded I believed there was something he could do But you just hung your head And told me it was the door I needed to be going to "Son there's just principles I cannot be the one who helps you" You said "I'm not your side You're probably paying for your sin I don't understand your kind It isn't mine" Father your cold hearts a smoking gun Your cross aint no where I want to hang my hope from There's still something I half believe And that's why I'm leaving this world behind me See my sexuality don't have nothing to do with my integrity When I get into that land I'll lead with the one who wears the crown He will say "I'm on your side The side that's kind Judge not what's right In time you'll find You left" Songwriters: Justin Vernon
...every song i discover from this guy is pure & brilliant. Gives me the freedom of not wanting anything anymore - at least for a while. :) Magnificient.
for the people who don't know the full voice of justin vernon.. you'll hear some of his best vocal work listening to deyarmond edison.. his pre bon iver band (and his middle name) look up dusty road, you won't be upset about it
I love being on Justin videos, because I am surrounded by Justin lovers... Unlike my friends.. Which call this music 'crap'. Each to their own I suppose.
my youth tried to teach me along with other junior high, high school students that being gay was wrong and i was the only one who argued it. even today people tell me how they remember me telling off my youth leader, and i show them this song. i wish i had the courage to show my leader too
Man I really could easily get into this, Justin has an interesting inner conflict with religion, it’s as almost he’s searching for answers from religion and couldn’t find any. I wouldn’t say in any way Justin is anti Christian or whatever, just a human being honest with himself with how he see things around and how they affected him or maybe just searching for answers, those he’ll never get.
I guess this song is all about how men can turn belief into something horrible. It's about knowing that "God" or anything will love you and accept you the way you are, exactly... It says that religion itself is made by men, who are full of imperfections, like prejudice... and that, actually, you shouldn't have "rules" to deserve heaven or peace. I'm not gay and I don't believe in God, but this lyrics touched me a lot, anyway. Awesome message, people should put more thoughts to this.
Who is called Bon Iver as a real name? :) Justin Vernon is just him. Bon Iver was just him till Sean Carey, Matthew McCaughan and Michael Noyce joined him for live shows. Now you can consider Bon Iver as a four member band. DeYarmond Edison was/is Justins second band after Mount Vernon (and also his middle name). He formed "Bon Iver" and the rest of the members of DeYarmond Edison formed "Megafaun". Which is also a really good band.
Chuck Itall So I heard it from a friend that there was this guy that I should talk to So you let me in, opened doors underneath a crucifix statue So I explained to you, I was having troubles getting through And I was thinking of my end, it was just the sky I kept looking to You said "I'm on your side“ I thanked you and I cried I almost died I was making strides, I was showing up every Sunday But I was still confused about the pain that had invaded me And I'm still wondering if my soul’s worth it to anybody You assured me that the congregation would hear me They said "we're on your side, There's an unconditional kingdom that stands up high He lets all believers in through the forgiveness of sin“ So I explained to you what was the cause of my suffering See it was a while ago, there was an alleyway and there was a group of men When they hurt me they whispered that the gays had to pay When they beat me all of my worth was taken away See I needed you and your knowing of the lord's own way through And I was unfolded, I believed there was something he could do But you just hung your head and told me it was the door I needed to be going to "Son there's just principles, I cannot be the one who helps you“ You said "I'm not your side You're probably paying for your sins I don't understand your kind, it isn't mine“ Father your cold heart’s a smoking gun Your cross ain’t no where I want to hang my hope from There's still something I half believe, that's why I'm leaving this world behind me See my sexuality don't have nothing to do with my integrity When I get into that land, I'll lead with the one who wears the crown He will say "I'm on your side The side that's kind Judge not what's right In time you'll find you’re left“
Bon Iver used to be another solo project of Justin Vernon, but evolved into a band. That's why some people (myself included) still refer to Justin Vernon as Bon Iver, rather than the band as a whole.
look at me with the top comment! haha and @fynnan and @jolienshabooya.. you guys are very welcome.. i love deyarmond edison, it's just justin vernon portraying his emotion with equal eloquence of bon iver, but in a different genre.
damn english ain't my mothertongue, never got the meaning of this song being about the catholic church and such check out his part in the new cd of Anaïs Micthelle - hadestown, awesome stuff, ani difranco features on it as well :D
You still didn't tell me about ya experience, but it's all good. Did you know that Christians were considered athiest in the the second century because they did not believe in the pagan gods of the Roman Empire? Consequently, they were martred for their faith.
So does Justin Vernon identify as lgbtq+? (Asking just for curiosity cus of the song lyrics. I am queer). "When they heard me, they whispered that the gays had to pay. When they beat me, all my worth was taken away...See my sexuality, got nothing to do with my integrity."
So how does the truth lie within yourself? So everyone has there own version of truth according to that statement you made?? So you don't submit to God and follow your own morals?? Are you autonomous??
So who determines the reasonable limits? Germans killed Jews, The South had slaves, etc. How are you to tell them their subjective truth or opinions about morality were wrong? I assume that you agree with me that we can make a judgment about these atrocities being immoral. So how do two subjective truths that are contrary to one another still exist and be... truth?
This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. It definitely plays the heartstrings of anyone who's ever questioned anything about life.
Lyrics
So I heard it from a friend
That there was this guy that I should talk to
So you let me in
Opened doors underneath a crucifix statue
So I explained to you
I was having troubles getting through
And I was thinking of my end
It was just the sky I kept looking to
You said "I'm on your side"
I thanked you and I cried
I almost died
I was making strides
I was showing up every Sunday
But I was still confused
About the pain that had invaded me
And I'm still wondering
If my souls worth it's money back
You assured me
That the congregation would hear me
They said "we're on your side,
There's an unconditional kingdom
That stands up high
And let's all believers in
Through the forgiveness of sins"
So I explained to you what was the cause of my suffering
See it was a while ago
There was an alleyway
And there was a group of them
When they hurt me
They whispered that the gays had to pay
When they beat me
All of my worth was taken away
See I needed you
And you know one of the lords the way through
And I was unfolded
I believed there was something he could do
But you just hung your head
And told me it was the door I needed to be going to
"Son there's just principles
I cannot be the one who helps you"
You said
"I'm not your side
You're probably paying for your sin
I don't understand your kind
It isn't mine"
Father your cold hearts a smoking gun
Your cross aint no where I want to hang my hope from
There's still something I half believe
And that's why I'm leaving this world behind me
See my sexuality don't have nothing to do with my integrity
When I get into that land
I'll lead with the one who wears the crown
He will say "I'm on your side
The side that's kind
Judge not what's right
In time you'll find
You left"
Songwriters: Justin Vernon
My god i love how versitile this man is, he literally covers the entire range of the music spectrum and never dissappoints
Incredibly underrated man.
This mans lyrics give me hope in this world. truly.
Reconciling your faith and sexuality must be such a rough thing to go through. Really great song.
"Justin Vernon is an undivudual project" He's a human being not a project .... An immensely talented human being at that!
I've never properly listened to this, it's one of the saddest most brave beautiful songs ever.
"No description available." Damn straight.
Said it before and I'll say it again...the only reason people dislike his songs is because they end.
...every song i discover from this guy is pure & brilliant.
Gives me the freedom of not wanting anything anymore - at least for a while. :)
Magnificient.
I've just started listening to JV's music extensively, and all other music seems like trash
Just keeps me going.
Absolutely does my friend
This song, these lyrics could mean so much to so many people if only they heard it, like it does for me.
Justin Vernon is just one of those artists who tells you the story of his song without you needing to listen to his lyrics :)
for the people who don't know the full voice of justin vernon.. you'll hear some of his best vocal work listening to deyarmond edison.. his pre bon iver band (and his middle name)
look up dusty road, you won't be upset about it
"I don't understand your kind, it isn't mine"
beautiful song... the lyrics are so deep, I love this man!
This is brilliant.
This is off Justin Vernon's album 'Self Record'.
Just adding this in case anyone wants more music from this period of his life.
Man it isn’t on spotify 😩😭😭
do you know where can i heard this
A hidden gem!
I freaking love this song.
I love how he depicts how the church sees homosexuality.
Amazing.
I love being on Justin videos, because I am surrounded by Justin lovers... Unlike my friends.. Which call this music 'crap'. Each to their own I suppose.
music is subjective sure. but you can't deny the authenticity and rawness that is objective
beautiful song w/ a good message another reason to love jd vernon
"When they beat me...."
I get chills...every damn time.
How can music even be this good?
haha right?? you're welcome :) i still come back to it every once in a while, it's taken on some meaning for me and it hits home every time.
i have missed you, justin.
Stunningly beautiful
Beautiful
The lyrics are beautiful.
What a gem, thank you, thank you
Great message, much respect
Cool number, Bon. Enjoyed it.
Justin Vernon is the man behind it all... he's not "an individual project"
my youth tried to teach me along with other junior high, high school students that being gay was wrong and i was the only one who argued it. even today people tell me how they remember me telling off my youth leader, and i show them this song. i wish i had the courage to show my leader too
What an awesome song.
Probably the best of the best.
I love him so much
There's still something I half believe, that's why I'm leaving this world behind me
In yourself. And from other people.
You do not need a higher being to tell you how to love.
This one reminded me of Counting Crows. Maybe it's just me.
Yeeeeeees!
I think the same thing!
I was thinking "This reminds me of something" and then I read your comment.
Chris Taylor Right on the money. That voice is Adam Duritz on the money.
true that!!!!
Just heard this beautiful song and had the urge to listen to Counting Crows after maybe 10 years :)
I would say that Bon Iver is an 'experience'
Yes, Justin vernon is the Artist, Bon Iver is the band
I hope you guys never have this happen, but if someone you care about passes, Justin Vernon can help. God damn.
this guy is actually perfetc.
Justin Vernon is a guy, Bon Iver is one of his bands, sometimes he does solo stuff and sometimes he makes music with his other bands.
the description says it all!
Man I really could easily get into this, Justin has an interesting inner conflict with religion, it’s as almost he’s searching for answers from religion and couldn’t find any. If I’m not mistaken, I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that he got his degree in religious studies. Interesting stuff nonetheless.
You know it's good when it has 122 likes and no dislikes.
wow..
hahaha way to gooooooo dude/dudette
Wow

I don't know what this is but I like it.
They all met before the "for emma" album. Noyce was Vernons student. :)
Justin Vernon is the frontman for Bon Iver.
@spinasweetness Thank you for that recommendation. I love that song now!
bon iver is the band. justin vernon is the lead singer, this is a song he did on his own. he's also the lead singer for deyarmond edison
Who is called Bon Iver as a real name? :) Justin Vernon is just him. Bon Iver was just him till Sean Carey, Matthew McCaughan and Michael Noyce joined him for live shows. Now you can consider Bon Iver as a four member band.

It's Marc Cohn grinning in the background!
@spinasweetness Thank you for this tip! It's AMAZING! thank you
@spinasweetness thank you. really :)
I've never thought about it until now, but Justin Vernon reminds me of Bruce Springsteen.

Leonardo Fuentes Thanks Leonardo! cheers
you're beautiful
:(
Bon Iver used to be another solo project of Justin Vernon, but evolved into a band. That's why some people (myself included) still refer to Justin Vernon as Bon Iver, rather than the band as a whole.
I was confused too... then I googled ^^
I can’t find it on Itunes why??
Judge not what is evil,Judge not what is kind!
I want to find this guitar. if anyone knows please tell me the model
if anyone knows please tell me the model
@sausagemanlorne23 probably because anyone who cares enough to dig this deep really likes justin's work
haha i know, i wonder if it's because people looked it up from this page or something... it didn't used to be there.
@scott090919 is it though?
dusty road is probably one of my favorites by him.. but lets be real, can he create a bad song?
@SkoofusTheDoofus
This is the internet, the possibilities are endless.
after listening to this song about 20 times i think i've got the meaning down, being gay and a chistian
look at me with the top comment!
haha and @fynnan and @jolienshabooya.. you guys are very welcome..
i love deyarmond edison, it's just justin vernon portraying his emotion with equal eloquence of bon iver, but in a different genre.
hahaha i'll add in another 5000 then!
when this has dislikes you know the world is fucked
But where is the love?
Of course they are a band, there's nine of them, this isn't up for debate.
he really should rerelease his older solo stuff apparently only 100 copies of self-record was made.
anaïs mitchell btw*
damn english ain't my mothertongue, never got the meaning of this song being about the catholic church and such
check out his part in the new cd of Anaïs Micthelle - hadestown, awesome stuff, ani difranco features on it as well :D
@joepbailey I have Hazeltons and I still don't think it sounds like him.
this is very springsteen
not YOUR side, but definitly the side of this artist!
You still didn't tell me about ya experience, but it's all good. Did you know that Christians were considered athiest in the the second century because they did not believe in the pagan gods of the Roman Empire? Consequently, they were martred for their faith.
shhh. listen to the music.
your comment wasn't lool :)

"When they heard me, they whispered that the gays had to pay. When they beat me, all my worth was taken away...See my sexuality, got nothing to do with my integrity."
i'm not sure but a friend told me that he has a friend that got beaten up for being gay but Justin himself is not
Still some way to go.. but I like your red hair. Can I take you out?
I agree with @inactionreation This does not sound like Justin Vernon.
So how does the truth lie within yourself? So everyone has there own version of truth according to that statement you made?? So you don't submit to God and follow your own morals?? Are you autonomous??
So why are you an atheist Anthony??

@lortamai Just get rid of the J Biebs and the Rebecca Black and just triple the CocoRosie and you should be good!
This should be the homosexual anthem
