    Great video. I refinish firniture in my garage and my story is similar to your story. I use the exact same products and all the processes. I always stage furniture, I never take pictures of finished pieces in my garage. I have learned great tips and tricks over the years and have built a good inventory of must have supplies. Lately most of my work comes from pieces I am refinishing for others so much so that I haven’t been getting to pieces I have purchased myself. I never advertise but the work flows in consistently. For me a critical change I made along the way was being VERY selective in the pieces buy. I don’t mess with pieces that need major cleaning or repairs other than maybe a little wood filler and I no longer buy pieces to store with the hopes of getting them done. In and out is my motto…there are always great pieces waiting to be bought when I am ready for another piece.

    My tip: I wait until the end of a yard sale and usually get it for free... I've even asked if I could take all they have left over to just get it out of their way. I have found that people who've spent all the time and effort into a yard sale jump at the chance to just be done with it.
    Worst case... I run by goodwill and give them the things I don't need or want.

    Good info , so far after much research the top You Tube teachers are : born in a barn , the reclaimed heirloom , Sashca and Heather the east coast chic . In case you didn't know there are quite a few baby boomers ( men too ) that are doing this or interested in doing this like myself . I can only do it in a small space as I live in an apartment in NYC and yes there is quite a few good people here despite what the media says or what you may see on TV.

    I started painting furniture last year. Like you, I started with cheap stuff just to see what I could sell. Gradually I have been passing on the cheap stuff, spending a little more on quality pieces and selling for more. Also with buying better pieces, I find a lot less that needs to be fixed, other than small things like a drawer track or handles. I also started with cheaper paints (Rustoleum milk paint) and brushes. Worked my way up to General Finishes and Cling-on brushes now, thanks to your videos. I do still paint occasional cheaper pieces with Rustoleum milk paint but also don’t sell those for a premium price like I will with better furniture/paint. I also go back and forth between farmhouse look and a clean, sophisticated look, depending on my mood. I am getting more people asking for custom work too which is great.

    Hi I’m furniture Restore/flipper in Roseville/Sacramento area also
    I’m in antelope ca.
    I was just curious if you bought a lot of furniture that needs work and or if you just pass on a lot of them that may need to much work
    also how do you go about selling it to the customer
    do you deliver or do you have them come to your house like I do.
    and are you like me when you’re loading it up I cringe when it’s time for them to pick it up because I think they’re going to scratch it
    LOL 🤣

      Hi - we are practically neighbors! I am really picky and don’t buy pieces that need a lot of work - a lot of work means a lot of time and time is essential to keeping the business profitable. Nothing structural (unless I know I can fix easily or it’s given to me). I don’t deliver - I have a company I refer my clients to use if they can’t pick up themselves. Most of my sales are from my FB business page, website or instagram. I don’t load - that is up to my client to bring help, bring blankets, etc to ensure the piece makes it some safely - it’s always a little worrisome - but I send them with care instructions and touch up paint! That may be a good one - the process from start to finish! Thank you for watching!

      yes I see your pieces on Facebook marketplace and on Instagram
      I’m not sure how to sell on Instagram I need to look further into that.
      I help people put The pieces into the vehicle
      but once I had a nightmare
      they came when it was sprinkling
      they got it back to their house and since the paint is water-based there is smudges everywhere errrr
      so I went to their house and fix the pieces for them 🌧
      Yeah I know what you mean with the pieces that need a lot of work
      it literally takes more time to fix them
      then to paint them? 😞

I don’t discount the price in any way for selling as a set or breaking it up - it remains the same price point (per piece), so when you advertise just know the price you want for each piece in the set. You can even say in your ad that you will sell separate. Sets sell well in my area, but maybe not in everyone’s.

      Why??

    • @larryc1964
      @larryc1964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@loriscook5231 why? Because the tax people (CRA) don’t want anyone profiting from such transactions tax free. And yes guys have be at least fined and you can face jail time. In the province of Ontario a govt organization- OMVIC (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council) regulates how Dealers advertise and sell new and used cars. They also actively track down and seek out those that have had several vehicles titled to them in a short period. There’s even a snitch line to tattle about your neighbor if you suspect car flipping. They make out like they are protecting consumers from problem vehicles and safety but it’s widely thought that really it’s govt not happy that someone handy can repair items or do some cosmetic work and sell the car for profit. Very sad that a guy just wanting to make extra money to support his family is criminalized over this. Car dealers love these guys because they will punish their competition ( private sellers) for selling a car that they just bought and maybe only cleaned it up , did some minor mechanical on. It’s insane but true. Needless to say , this is one of the reasons I’m moving back to Georgia after I finish taking care of a family matter here in Canada.

    • @luvkayakn
      @luvkayakn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually the same in the U.S. If you sell more than 1 or 2 DMV transactions (car, boat, mobile home) annually, you're considered a dealer and required to be licensed as such. In regards to furniture, it is the same as any business income, and the government definitely wants its share of your hard earned pie.
