  • This time I'm replacing 3 belts on a Sony TCK-670 3 head cassette deck with dual capstan. I still didn't order proper belts, I just want to see if the deck will work with some Chinese random belts.
In this video, I'm showing you how to disassemble tape transport on many Sony cassette decks, clean the remains that old belts left (goo), and how to install new belts, there are 3 belts to be replaced / installed.

Everything is so professional and casual. You basically show your hands and comment on their work. This is so different from other similar ones, that I even recorded your video in case of need.
    Thanks. Great job !!!

Very nice video, which gives clear ideas of servicing any kind of mechanism.
It is regrated that SONY such a reputed brand is using
poor quality of belts for this classic mechanism.
    Thanks for this intresting.

This video is awesome. Thanks for much! It, and your other videos, helped me on my TC-K620, which was a gooey mess. The small belt was so far gone that I even had to take that motor completely off the board because the goo had gotten down to where you oiled the other motor. On mine, there is that tiny retainer ring that must be pried off to get the door detached. It went flying and was lost for a while. Fortunately I remembered how I had the mechanism pointed when I pried it off and carefully searched until I saw it over on the side of a cabinet. The retainer ring on the idler thing under the bottom of the tape cradle was hard to remove, and even harder to put back on without losing it. I found that turning the tweezers to the side and pressing down on it with both prongs works best. But I got the deck working, and actually enjoyed fiddling with it.

Guess what im doing right now... (had to deal with the gooey version) had repaired it earlier with a self made belt from innertube bike :) If your going to fix this same one I recommend you also order the 2 capstans beside the 3 belts.
Edit: It did not work the first time and kept repeating to start lifting the heads and down and up and.. turned out to be a small switch near that nylon seesaw.
    To make your life easier:
If you would unscrew the right screw holding the transformer in place you can rotate it so it lines up in a straight line and screw it tight again into the perfect lines hole. so why they placed it on a angle ?? it is now easier to get the "drive" in and out.
Also noticed that you can keep those 2 metal plates together with the wheels intact, remove the 4 M3 screw at the front and the one long screw next to the motor and you can pull the whole thing apart.
your video helped me out. playing some ancient tapes now :)
    Thanks!

You mentioned the middle motor was for fast forward / rewind - I'm just curious, in play mode, is the take-up reel powered by the same motor, or by the capstan motor instead?

Your video is the absolute best! I'm fixing a TC-K677ES, followed the instructions, replaced all the belts as shown, and now eject button works, FF and Rewind work, but when I hit play the heads move up into position but the cassette tape doesn't turn- after a second of trying to play, the player auto-stops like it's reached the end of a tape (but it hasn't). Any idea what could be jamming up the mechanism only when I hit play? thank you for your wonderful video.

I don't know what kind of cleaning solution you use, but I have used only Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning such repairs for decades. And only sewing machine oil to lubricate the sliding bearings. It is quite cheap with effective. I have a similar SONY TC-K 661S and it plays great.

Deriving inspiration and courage from your superb demonstration, I work on my TCK-590, although not exactly the same but mechanisms overlap. Managed to get the belts on and reassemble, repeating the process twice as, for some reason, the cassette holder does not open or close. I do not know what I might have missed, possibly misalignment of the loading cam gear? Thank you for any advice.

Thanks for the helpful video, I also have TC-K670 and have disassembled the player and the belts seem to be a little bit loose, but they still seem to work when I turn the wheels. I have problem where when I want to play cassette, the motor just makes a whirling sound. Do you think this is fault of the belts?

there were two more washers (transparent plastics) in the back plate holding/spacing two capstans. they are easy to lose just be careful.the supply pinch roller needs to be adjusted with a test tape.

The left hinge to the door seems to be permanently attached... so that I can't remove the outer door..... Any suggestions?? (The TC-K670 and the TC-K960 are nearly identical, except for the hinge problem) Thanks for any help!!

Thanks very much for making this detailed video! I was able to replace all three belts. Only one of them was gooey. The good news is that the door opens and closes beautifully again, and the fast forward & rewind also work great. Playback works, but the tape speed is far too slow. I think this can be adjusted by a variable resistor on the back of the capstan motor. Is this a simple procedure? Do you have any advice to correct this problem? Your help would be appreciated.
The capstan motor needs to be replaced. I tried to adjust the speed and it will not allow the speed to be adjusted. It won't hold a constant speed. The replacement part is 3356-635-1. No longer available through Sony. I need to start my Internet hunt.

I got a TC-K677ES, and it seems almost the same inside; my belts had gone; I just replaced them OK. But I have a new problem; do you think it can be fixed? Any pointers? When playing back a known good tape, I only get sound from the right channel; the left is silent, and even the VU meters do not move on the left channel; just the right VU bars function. If I record, it seems to be recording to both left and right (I tried playing recording in a walkman). I wiggled all the cables, and all seems fine. Also, the recordings have a buzzing sound on them; if I switch to monitor mode, I hear a buzzing sound from any input. Even after setting the record level to zero, I still hear buzzing in source/monitor mode. The buzzing is also recorded on both channels. But playback, even of the buzzing, is just the right channel in this deck. If I press Pause Record, the buzzing gets louder and then softer for a split second.
The sound I do get from the right channel doesn't sound the best either, but it's hard to say it's not been used for years, and I just got back into tapes again.
When playing back tape and only hearing the right channel, I notice if I switch from dolby off to dolby on then off again rapidly, I see a small peak bar show up in the left channel display. Is it worth doing, or is it beyond it? Thanks

I see you didn't pay attention to the microswitch on the right that detects the opening of the door during assembly. You have to turn the big white gear a little or press the microswitch.

    • @p0rk0ltsz4ft9

Also, an important step was left out: If you remove the supply roller, you have to adjust the tape guide with a mirror cassette and the center position of the tape on the eraser head. ;)
