SONY TC-366 Reel To Reel Tapecorder Restoration EP-01

  • This is a 70s SONY Reel to Reel tapecorder TC-366. I found this at yard sale. It was broken, not moving at all. However all parts were intact and cosmetically in good condition. I've never restored Reel to Reel, so this was my first experience.. I had no clue what to do, or where to look, but I thought it was going to be fun.
The first clue I found was exploded motor run capacitor. But just replacing it did not fix the problem. I dug deeper and found out burn out motor, then worn out loose belts, etc...
For the copy right reason, I separated video in 2 parts. This video is EP-01 and EP-02 is sound test. Enjoy !!
    Thanks !!
    Teddy

This brings back memories! I bought one of these at a flea market around 1985 or so, and it worked great until I had to get rid of it because I emigrated in 2000. The sound quality is amazing; I have many radio recordings at 19cm/s (7.5ips) and when I play those at half speed, I can clearly hear the 19kHz FM stereo pilot tone. I took it apart many times but never as thoroughly as you. Back then it only needed a drop of oil in the capstan and cleaning the heads every once in a while. My TC-366 was in the case 180 degrees opposite of yours (I liked to use it upright) but I found out quickly it's designed to go in both ways. Thanks for posting!

Hi, Jac. Thank you for your compliment on my video. I agree that R2R has a great sound. When I started restoring this one, I had no idea what to do, however, there were many information on the web and it helped me to understand what to do. The restoration went well and listening music from what I just restored was priceless.

I had this model back in the mid-70’s. The big function selector knob on the right became hard to use and make work. There was a metal linkage that bent and I would bend it straight again to get it to work. I used to do some routine maintenance on it but I never took the mechanism apart like that. I might have been able to keep if working if I had. Good video. Brings back memories.

Hi, James. Thanks for your compliment on my restoration. In you case, something isn't right, so do not push it down by force, if you do so you may brake some parts. Remove machine from casing and check it from top to bottom, maybe something you did not see before will come up. Hope you will fix your problem. Teddy

Hi - thank you for this video, I have a TC-377 coming to me via ebay. While the listing says "all functions working" I take that with a grain of salt for equipment so old but it does look very clean (which is a good starting point). I also have a little Sony TC-255 and its a pain to work on the back side and to take bits off but the TC-366 (the 377 is similar) seems to be a breeze to work on from the front, back and to disassemble!

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Richard. Hope you will have a great time to restore vintage R2R TC-377. My honest opinion after restoration of TC-366 and similar one, first you want to clean the moving mechanism and give them a new lubrication. Second check the drive belts and if the belts is getting weak because of its age, you want to replace them. And finally you want to check the motor capacitor condition. If the motor speed isn't right, probably you need to change the motor capacitor. There are tons of information how to replace it on the internet!

    Hello Teddy
I didn't know that this taperecorder was sold in the way that you
put it together. A friend of mine bought this machine about 45 years
ago and I bought a TC 252, because I had no seperate amplifier and
in this it was build in and it had also the speakers. I think it is
a quite good machine although there is just one single motor in it.
I soon sold it to the sister of a friend of mine. Ten years ago a
bought an Akai 202 ss-d, a four channel unit with auto reverse. It
works fine, but I bought it just for it's good looking. Most the
Japanese electronis, the tapes, the receivers, amplifiers and
turntables of the seventies look much much better than those who
were build afterwords. The time of real Hifi have gone and most of
the people are no more interestet in it. It's a pity!
Thank you for your answer and have a good time.

Teddy: I've tackled minor repair on my TC-630, thanks to your inspiration. Managed to clean up a few things, fix a couple of stiff controls.
Can you tell me why it seems to play at the same speed no
matter where the control is? I've checked mechanical, seems okay.
The lever moves up and down according to the speed, but the reels don't
seem to change speed on record OR playback. Thanks.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

When the lever is pushed or pulled to different speed, the drive belt is also move to the next size pulley? Usually speed pulley has 2 size next to each other, and when the lever is pulled or pushed, it will move the drive belt to different size of pulley, it is like the gear change of the bicycle chain move. If the drive belt is on the different size of the pulley and still speed is same, that means you many need to replace motor capacitor, maybe it is getting weak and can not rotate the pulley when it comes to fast speed. That's my guess. Hope you can find your solution.

    Teddy,
Refer to your video 2:24 - you span the flywheel, then at 2:25, you picked up something underneath, I think on top of the flywheel bearing thrust plate, you did it too fast in your video, and I was not sure what you had picked up and put it into a paper cup. I am restoring a 377, nearly identical to 366. During my restoration, I picked up a large inner diameter fiberglass made washer near the bearing thrust plate, I am not sure if this washer goes on top of the bearing thrust plate, like the one you pick up. If yes, I didn’t see you put it back when you assembled the flywheel. What is the purpose of this washer? How to put this washer back, using just grease to hold it in place? Can you please clarify this? I appreciate your assistance. Great Video!
    Thanks!

Great video Teddy; I'm working on a Sony TC-355 and have a problem. The R2R is runs well and plays well however in order to get it to play I have to manually push the screw (middle section) of the felt pad flaps to press the tape to the record/play heads. When I stop the play function the felt pad flaps retract away from the heads like they are supposed to but when I engage the play function they stay down and don't come back up to come in contact with the tape and heads. Does this sound like a clean and lube operation should be done or could this be more serious? Your comment would be most appreciated.

I have my Ampex 2100 restored and it worked completely, the other day, and then it worked this morning, and went I got home, the motor is dead, but when I checked, it got warmer and the motor doesn't seem to run, and it doesn't move at all. I checked the wires and it goes into the capacitor and didn't do too much at all. But all I need to do is replace it. This is the same issue that they did with the Sony TC-366. Hi Teddy
    Jack here from Aus
Wow mate you done a pretty good job there restoring that machine
I've got one like that only an later model the TC 378 with the full stainless front what I've got in 1976 in Europe
The only problem with mine is the belts I think and a lot of dirt
I stop using it many years ago when the CD's came out
Lucky I still have all my tapes
so tomorrow I'm going to give it a shot to start cleaning the inside and see what belts I need
Don't think they are the same as the TC 366
If I get stuck can I please contact you to help me out?
    Cheers Jack

+jack turtle Hi, I checked TC-378 with google, and found out that inside of the TC-378 is really similar with TC-366. It uses 2 belts. Here is a ebay listing for the belt.

Hi. Is any reason why you go with a 1.5 uF 450V capacitor since the old one was 1.5uF 250V AC? that is far less; did you check the motor prior to switch the capacitor with the CBB61 at 450V, not sure if that burn the motor. I notice that you replaced at end both the motor and capacitor with similar to the original one, that is a 1.5 uF -5+10%, 250 WV AC...

Hi, seba. Thanks for asking. In my video, I researched how to replace a motor run capacitor in Sony R2R, the title of the youtube video was "How To Replace a Motor Run Capacitor in a Vintage Sony Reel To Reel Tape Recorder", but I could not find it anymore in the youtube. Anyway, he showed me in the video which parts we should use, and he said about voltage, it is ok to use higher voltage than 250V. So I purchase same type of motor run capacitor he did. He was a professional repair man for especially R2R.

I am looking for a run motor capacitor, 1.5 UF and 0.5 UF for a TC-366 recorder.. This is a dual capacitor evidently. There is only one capacitor, but has 5 wires going to it, with three posts on the capacitor. Do you know where I could locate one?

Can any run motor capacitor work for the tc 377 or do you have to with matching numbers

      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the video from here
      th-cam.com/video/M2s9SPE8diI/w-d-xo.htmlm23s
      Original was 1.5uF +10 -5% 250 VAC and I used 1.5uG +5 -5% but 450 VAC
So VAC does not have to meet and greater than original is OK.
Of if you find exactly same matching number, that will be good.

Hello Teddy. I have the same tapecorder. I used to play and record using the 7.5 speed and it used to work great, when suddenly it begins to slow in speed. Now I can't use the 7.5 speed but instead I switched and uses the 3.75 speed in which it works well. Is there a way to fix the 7.5 speed since most of my tapes are in that speed? Also, the player is having difficulty when I put in fast forward and reverse. Can you give advice? Thanks and by the way, I really like this video of yours. -Martin

Hi, I had another Sony R2R and it also had a problem with motor run capacitor. I replaced it with "CBB61 1.5uF AC 450V Rectangle Non Polar Motor Run Capacitor" and worked like a charm. I am not sure why your TC366 has 2 of them, but I think you can replace it with one capacitor.
It can be ordered from ebay/amazon, here is a amazon link.
      amzn.to/2aPqbn1
I bought from china and usa, if you buy from china, it will be around $1, but shipping time will be more than 2 weeks.
On the other hand, if you buy from USA, it will cost you $4 to $7, but you can get it with in a couple of days.
Hope you can fix your problem.

Do not give up. Take a time. Only you will be able to locate the problem parts. It will take a time for you but if you do not give up, eventually you will win. Stay out from it for a while, take a vacation, forget it. Then you may get some inspiration from nowhere how to fix it. The restoration work is like that.

You need to find why the play does not work properly. Take a time friend. The restoration sometimes needs more time to complete it. One of my restoration took 3 years to complete. Only you can find the reason why it is not working. Remove it and check again as many times as you need to. I do hundreds of times to remove and check inside out. You should do it until you find the reason what made play mode not working.

hello, I live in Argentina, now buy a sony as the one shown here, my question is this, in my country mains power is 220 volts 50 hz, looking at the engine that you change in the video, says 100 volts 50/60 hz, that means that in my country the engine speed will remain correct? thank you very much.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Dany Calixto I think you are going to have to check power supply input level. It can be change between 120v or 220v. The voltage should be step down to the motor safety level by power supply and step down module. Also you can check the voltage from the wire that will be connected to the motor. But please check more detail with professional. Teddy

For me, I clean them with rubbing alcohol, then de-magnetize it. If the sealing on the screws are still there, most likely the position is still in good.

Thanks for the comment. As you said, this setup is upside down. It was originally like that, and I checked the service manual as well as the history of this 300 series and found out that actually Sony made upside down set up by purpose.
      reel2reeltexas.com/vinAd72SonyTC377.jpg
This picture is from Sony and TC-377 / 300 series, and setup is like upside down.
I tried to set my TC-366 to the original stand up position, but seemed like it was difficult because the wooden body's holes for the screws were not aligned with stand up position. So I left it as upside down style. But still in good sound they make. Thanks!!

I have the same deck & the manual which says it can actually be used either way...depending if you want to use it horizontally or vertically. Manual says you can switch the wooden case around depending on your use.
Just got mine & haven't gotten around to take it apart yet, it looks like the motor is not spinning. What is the easiest way to remove the instant stop lever (so the face plate can be removed) ? I understand it is removed clockwise. Preferably without scratching it. Thanks.
