For people still wondering why 90 degree out of phase with piston its because, When in phase, At TDC piston speed is 0 so the stylus cannot show changes in pressure on the paper, the stylus movement is just too small to draw compression and peak pressure differently. In phase means the drum rotates same as the movement of the piston (up down motion of the piston= rotation of the drum). When out of phase by 90 degree, It means your drawing the diagram with the drum rotating at the TDC position. So basically your rotating the drum by hand when the piston is at TDC. (Piston at TDC= rotation of the drum). So you will get a clear drawing when at TDC.
Thats a very good explanation of indicator diagram and the process, only thing missed in the procedure is drawing atmospheric line, it was asked to me during my orals and surveyor wanted to hear that first I will draw atmospheric line

Draw card is not for power calculation. Power card is used for power calculation. Draw card is for assessing injection and ignition characteristics which cannot be inferred directly from the power card.

we are pulling the lever with hand, timing it in such a way that its 90 degree out of phase, power card mai we dont have any control on the drum
