In 1972 there was a sickle cell anemia fundraiser show at the FOX in Detroit. Hosted by comedian Nipsey Russell (played the tinman in WIZ). Edwin Starr made the largest donation of the night $5,000. Nipsey said " he must have enough money to air condition a cotton field.". But he didn't perform. Marvin and Jamerson did perform
Edwin moved from the USA to Nottingham UK, my home city. I had the privilege of meeting him when he came to the club where I worked . Such a true gentleman and an incredible artist. Americas loss was our gain. His grave is here in Nottingham, and many still pay their respect there . RIP Edwin and thank you for such music.
I wasn't aware of this gem until I watched the movie "Adventures In Babysitting" during it's original theatrical run.... this song MADE the movie for me ! Thanks for the extended version.
Because tons of folks are still visiting this and other mosogotam tracks, you should know that the owner of this channel, whose real name is John, sadly passed away in March 2020 from COVID-19 - tragically, he was one of the very early victims of the virus. John was an absolute creative genius for this and all the other wonderful tracks he created. While it is a tragedy that we won't get any new productions from him, he still managed to leave us with a goldmine of material to enjoy for years to come - what a gift! John, may you rest in peace.
The Funk Brothers in most cases used two drummers a tambourine player and if you listen carefully you can hear the congas. That's why I such a funky beat.
There was so much great music in this era...contemporary youth of today have no idea of the magnificent harmonies, syncopation, melodies, rhythm, innovative instrumentation! I truly miss this wonderful era of contemporary music!
Dear Edwin the adopted brit, he used to tour the uk quite a lot and do all the soul weekenders he loved his fans and was always a real gent, RIP Mr Starr
One day when I was in high school a friend of mine (Quinten) came to school and said I cut a record last night on drums. Well this is it and it is still played today on commercials. This was back in the sixties.
I just want to compliment and thank you on such awesome mixes to classic Motown songs. I was born in downtown Detroit in 1954 and so many of these artists are an integral part of my youth. Diana Ross and The Supremes never stop to add so much to my life. Again, thank-you on such wonderful stuff.
Haven't heard this song in years, for some reason it's been in my head all day. Great thing about TH-cam, I can look it up and listen to it! Thanks Mosogotam!
January 21st: Happy birthday R&B-Soul Singer Charles Edwin Hatcher / Edwin Starr (1942-2003) Thank you and God bless. RIP....thanks for the upload, mosogotam. Blessings. #keeprockin
I really love this , I used to sing this song when my mom would send me to the store to get bread. I remember saying I got 10 miles to go. Thank you EWARD STARR!
This is an incredible mix. Thank to you for sharing the undeniable vocal talent of Edwin Starr R.I.P. I believe he is buried here in Nottingham UK, his adopted home. A gifted vocalist and a fine human being.
This is SOUL music not R&B! Edwin Starr's records "War" and "25 Miles" are prime examples of a Soul Music" singer and he was one of the best. As we're listening to him sing, we not only hear the passion in his voice, but we feel the emotions in his words. His soulful style of singing and vocal adds of "hey" with his soulful screams at the right times allows Mr. Starr to tells us a story so powerfully that the listeners can easily believe that "he has twenty-five to go, and his feet are hurting mighty bad". His voice, the horn section, the drums, and guitars builds so much excitement that when he begins his countdown of miles left to go by saying "come on feet don't fail me now, I got 10 more miles to go, I got 9,8,7,6....I've got 5 more miles to go over the hill and around the bend" the listener feels as if he's been on hype journey with him! That's what SOUL music does! SOUL music allows us to feel and experience the words of the song while we dance to it! "25 Miles" by Edwin Starr is SOUL MUSIC!!! PastorRP
Always flawless dance music from Mr. Starr 60s AND 70s!! Thank you for posting this 1968-69 Motown classic extended - See also Agent Double-O-Soul MONO INSTRUMENTAL/VOCAL 5 years earlier - DAVEDJ
DAVID WOLF I think this song came out in 1968. I'd know that because my first car was a 1968 Volkswagen beetle. I always played this song pretending I lived in this year.
I've always loved the intro of this song with the Hammond organ heard faintly in the chorus around the 00:17 second mark. Each time I hear the song I think of the wooden pre-solid state electric organ with it's vacuum tubes glowing hot and leslie speaker spinning. A true Norman Whitfield masterpiece. Thumbs up to the publisher. Great edit! and thanks for sharing this!!
I was lucky enough to record him for a track with Supremes Lynda Laurence that was on my first CD with the FLOS 'Private Number' and he was a total professional - turned up on time - did everything I asked (and more) and was just a joy to work with. Miss him.
Jan.21st: Happy birthday R&B-Soul Singer-songwriter Charles Edwin Hatcher / Edwin Starr (1942-2003) his previous band of 20 years, Total Concept Unlimited, became Rose Royce. Thank you and God bless. R.I.P. Thanks for the upload, mosogotam. Blessings.
I used to do my own dance to this song in the top rank Bristol some thought I was looney but I loved it, recently saw a video with young modern dancers doing the same sort of dance I did back in the 70's happy days it was no version of northern soul dancing ktf, thanks moto
Your extended versions are the best ever, a Baby boomer I think I was between the ages of 11 and 13 when Edwin Starr had his hey day, remember hearing this man all over AM radio back then, a definite hip shaker then and still...love it
I was watching Pastor Ed Young on television while ago on TBN of Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas....the winning walk with Jesus and I thought of the lyrics in this song by Edwinn Starr.
if you are suffer from dilexia spelled wrong but I think that is when you read backwards, pardon me because I am not an eye doctor, but I am 26 years old if you read 62 in reverse! Got to walk on!
I love this song, the only thing wrong with the original version is that it wasn't long enough. Thank you so much. Could you do "War"? That would just make my day!!!
+Antoinette Kincherlow particulat am i to "double-o-soul", with and without the lyrics. absolutely one of the gratest two sides on one ric-tic single!!!
this a bitter sweet song for me....sweet because I love the sound and we as teens at that time had a little dance we made up.....something like todays line dancing....bitter because I a teen 2 months with child and sick as a dog...baby is now 44
Ummm Ummm Ummm!....Take a bit of Edwin Starr, add a dash of Funk Brothers, mix in some 'Mosogotam magic spice' and you have the perfect Recipe for a feast! Well done John, yet more excellence and greatly appreciated.....Best regards, Neil.
Another gem, but then I'd expect nothing less. having to promote this on the Group "Motown Memories - Miracles, Wonders & Marvelettes"... Keep the motown sound coming.
I believe the drummers on this cut are Richard "Pistol" Allen and Uriel Jones, double tracked. I don't think James Gadson played on this, and the dear departed Benny Benjamin was already deceased when this was recorded.
EDWIN STARR IS TRULY A SOUL LEGEND, REST PEACEFULLY IN GOD'S BOSOM.
🎉 COOL MUSIC AND HE'S HANDSOME.... 🎉🎉
That drummer is on fire.
Mind blowing back beat, good vibes with this one. My Motown, baby. 💚 Uh- huh !!
Feet don’t fail me now. 2023. still sound good.

An amazing song from Edwin Starr, this one and of course War.
Walked home from the Torch tunstall to biddulph singing this song,on many occasions !
"War" is his biggest hit and most critically acclaimed but this is Edwin Starr's best song right here. 25 Miles.
The coolest of the cool……Edwin Starr….get it my man !!!!!
Seen him live in 89 .....greatest thing I've ever seen .Jimmy ruffin and junior walker on the same bill .....it don't get any better than that 😊

Motown, I was lucky to have grown up in the 60s.
Drummer killed it!🔥💯✊🏾🤘🏾
The Funk Brothers in most cases used two drummers a tambourine player and if you listen carefully you can hear the congas. That's why I such a funky beat.
The drummer killed it, yes! !and brought it back alive...resurrected it. Now "Come on feet". Omg
