PULASKI TRAIL - Wildfire History

- The great fires of 1910 raged, and three million acres were destroyed. Brave people risked and lost their lives. One such soul, Ed Pulaski, took his crew of 45 and an unknown man to the safety of an old mining tunnel. With the flames soaring, smoke darkening the skies, Ranger Pulaski encouraged his men to lie face down while he attempted to barricade the entrance with blankets, dowsing them with water to keep the fire from penetrating.
Ed lost 5 of his crew and the unknown man that day. But his heroic efforts saved the lives of 40. In 1913 he created a firefighting tool, part axe, part mattock, still used to fight forest fires.
The trail is four miles round trip, in dappled shade, and gains 800 feet in elevation. Some areas have a steep incline, and there are no facilities.

G’day Steve and Andrea. What a beautiful valley the Pulaski Trail is in. So lush, so green. We Aussies battled our own tragic and destructive bushfires all throughout my state, only four years ago. It was so bad that those raging and uncontrollable fires then,have been called our Black Saturday Bushfires. We were worried the fires might even have burned down our home on four acres, but we were very lucky. But we could see the fire front from our lounge room. It was so scary. So stay safe. Bush fires are really scary. When we lived in Cali, we were evacuated on two separate occasions. Those fires in Oz were terrible. All those animals - breaks my heart. Glad you enjoyed this pin, Greg. See you on our next adventure.

Hard to imagine how terrifying that whole ordeal must have been Rhonda clothes melting to your skin and everything you know being burned to the ground. And now it's so lush, peaceful and serene.

We couldn't even begin to imagine the helpless feeling of those men and what they had to endure.
Very interesting, I grew up with my Dad being a Ranger in the forest service and never knew the story behind the pulaski axe, I still have his axe in my garage. Thank you for that. I found your site recently and catching up on all your old ones.
Welcome to our channel, Hope. We found this story very interesting and enjoyed the hike in. We can’t imagine being caught in that fire and Pulaski kept calm enough to rescue those people. A true hero. As are all the fire fighters are.

Beautiful up there in Idaho it remains me of home here in Humbodlt County. You guys ever get a chance you should come here we have a lot of History sites and beautiful trails you can hike every where beautiful beaches you could camp at. Okay a pair of Pulaski's.
Yes you did say the name correctly. I wonder if was relation to a Polish General by the same name? Who served the Polish King And General George Washington. He was on loan from the Polish King because he was impressed by what the American People were trying to do. Also; a Polish name that ends with ski in the past meant something. It had the same meaning as example Sir John Smith.
Both Of my parents grew up in Buffalo NY between 1930's to the 1940's.
If you wonder why I know of some of these things. Polish on both sides of my family. That being 2nd generation Polish American.

The beauty was who was standing on the bridge:) Don't mind me, mom always said i was a flirt:) Before moving to AZ back in '72 we lived at 32nd & Pulaski in Chicago. Glad we moved.
