Ray, I’ve recently bought Sony EDV-5000 - my first Betamax machine! At last! Thinking now of buying the SL-HF3000 video recorder. The one isn’t in top cosmetical condition, but it works. I’m buying it mainly for sound recording.
Beautiful machine, I've always had a interest of electronics and audio/video equipment and I've never owned any Betamax's before. You are so lucky! Great find!
You will notice the there is a button to turn the Beta Hi-Fi off. If you wonder why anyone would want to do that, it's because Sony never mentions in it's marketing materials that enabling Beta hi-fi audio reduces the video resolution because the audio FM carrier signals take away some of the bandwidth of the video. So although Betamax was sharper than VHS with hi-fi off, if you turn Beta hi-fi on, the picture quality is is noticeably fuzzier and becomes about the same as VHS. Great find thanks for posting the unboxing hope it still had that "new VCR" smell.
I don't think that's actually true for NTSC decks. NTSC Beta Hi-Fi utilized a portion of the spectrum Beta itself didn't use, a pair of FM carriers between the chroma and luma carriers, a process known as frequency multiplexing. They'd prepared for this by shifting the Y carrier up by 400kHz quite awhile before Beta Hi-Fi was introduced. With PAL decks they used depth multiplexing via a second set of heads, just like VHS Hi-Fi. Those could cause noise in the video signal, since the audio signal was recorded physically on a lower layer of the tape with the video signal recorded on top of it and after. The audio signal could bleed thru into the video signal and cause additional video noise.
@@sunspot42 Beta Hi-Fi audio carriers reduced the lower sideband bandwidth of the FM moduled luminance carrier. I had an SL-HF750 Super Beta Hi-Fi deck and switching OFF the Beta Hi-Fi actually made the picture appear noticeably sharper because of the increased lower sideband bandwidth. With Beta Hi-Fi turned on the picture sharpness was only marginally better appearance than VHS.
FYI - The jacks marked "PCM" on the back are just regular video input/output jacks. The "PCM" designation is because you can connect them to a Sony PCM F1 device which turned analog audio into digital, and then into a video image which could be recorded on any video recorder (of course, it worked best on a Beta machine). The "S" jack is actually a "Control-S" connector for edit control between this unit and a Sony VHS machine (such as the SLV-R1000). And although this machine looks very nice, in 2015 I got a Sony SL-HF2100 in A+ refurbished condition. Although I miss some of the features from the SL-HF1000 (had three of them), the newer electronics in the 2100 really do seem to give a better picture.
After seeing this video on youtube I went and bought one from onejp like yours! but unfortunately when I got it a couple of days ago and plugged it in it didn't work so I sent it to the repair shop and today they called to tell me that it seems that the shipment was dropped so bad that a lot of stuff is broken inside and they don't know if they can fix it... what a luck...!
Awww....that is so awful to hear, I feel sick for you! That's happened to me a lot with UPS. I got very very lucky with this Japanese Betamax, considering it was only packed inside newspaper and a little tiny strip of bubble wra!!
Absolutely amazing and a big congratulations to you on the purchase. I have yet to see one on ebay. May I ask how you came by it? I love my SL HF900, but it is nowhere as nice as that 3000. I'd love to acquire one, one of these days! **Edit - just finished watching and saw that you shared the auction site. Thank you!
Thanks for the nice comments!! I check that Japanese auction site EVERY day, just to see what's there! And, there are usually 2 or 3 of these 3000s for auction. I knew I wanted one with the wooden sides, they really add a lot to the looks of this great machine!
I almost bought one last nite but decided to bid on it (the one with wood sides) but I was outbid this morning. How do I use the buy now option? I only saw a bid field even though there was a buy now price.
Daves Archives Not all auctions there have a buy it now. If you do see it, you have to first dump money into your "account" (You have to register on the site to bid, as you know), put enough money in there to cover the Buy Now price, and place a bid with that Buy Now amount, and it's yours! That's how I got mine!
I have 2 betamax edv 9000 one them came with the big remote it works and a broken sl2100 from japan (just wont play tapes) imported to Australia thinking of buying a sl-hf 3000 i have 5 PAL units as well they seem to cost more but have less features 4 hifi models and a broken C9 linear stereo
Because this model made for only Japan market and not for export , it is designed to work only with 100 volt AC power. I wonder maybe brightness of display because of higher electricity voltage in US. 120 V.
You would use this setting with a unit like the Sony PCM 701 ES it accepted analog video in and recorded PCM 16 or 14 bit digital audio onto the composite video signal of a Betamax recorder. I have the 701 and beta tapes of my compositions encoded in this fashion.
I Thought I Had A Beta Collection Too Be Proud Of,And I Have But.. You Are On A Level I Simply Cannot Compare to,as I am Sure You Know,To Get One Of The Really High End Machines Shipped Here In Manchester Uk Is Almost Impossible And Them To Get It Converted From NTSC To PAL Is Just Not Possible Any Longer,Well Not Here Anyway,Step Down Transformers Just Don't Do Anything But Rather Short The Components Out Or Will Not Provide Enough Power At All........Sorry But Am I Really Having A Conversation With Ray Glasser????...You Are A GOD To Beta Enthusiasts Here In The UK!!!!!!!
A beauty well done, is the data on a beta the same to what's on a vhs or does a beta read the tape in a different way so the tape info is different? P.S. is the remote still sealed in the bag or did you give in to temptation and start using it?
The picture looks amazing. I cant stand the digital imaging that is used on most TVs. The more high definition they are, the more processed and artificial it looks to me. The normal LCD TV picture looks fine to me, but the Ultra-HD images look terrible. And no, these are not the ramblings of an old man. I'm only 26. And yes, I do remember watching films on a Beta Max machine Young people sometimes have good taste, as well ;) I miss the pre-digital era, and I was only exposed to it just long enough to love it.
i have this sony slhf-3000 very long time ago, it cost HK$3000 in the year of 1988, excellent machine and can record in B1s mode, but the maintain fee is fucking expensive! for the normal sony betamax vcr, it can quite cheap for repair as parts can obtain from sony, but this 3000 , sorry it is a production equipment, the parts was ten or fifteen times than normal
sorry betacam walk over this deck my mates got the same heads are soft in betamax decks betacam digi is real good 2 set of video heads try one some time

I love the CBS Special Presentation at the beginning.... : )
Man, that's one gorgeous Betamax.
Saya punya player sony betamax hifi seri SL HF 950 tapi saya juga suka yang model ini juga, modelnya keren 👍👍😊😊
Not an S video, control L for use with an edit controller. The T jack is for control T that connects 2 SL1000 or 3000
Lol. I did wonder if you would have commented on this when I stumbled on the video. ;)
Hi 12voltvids
Congratulations on your wonderful beta deck.
Been hooked on that site, and every time a 1000D pops up on there, it goes into my bookmarks page. Man! Do I want a 1000D!!!
That really is a beautiful machine. So I'm wondering now that it is 4 years later if it is still working well for you.
Yes...it is...works perfectly!! Don't use it that often, which is probably why!
Love this machine! Unfortunately, only NTSC with 30 frames? Fortunately: a PAL version in my home: Sony SL-HF750…
LOVE the format!
You mean an HF950E(S)?

@@AnthonyMaw Beta Hi-Fi boosted the upper limit of the luminance carrier though, didn't it? I know SuperBeta did.

Sweet machine, congratulations and thanks for sharing the video with us.
Beautiful, here in Italy with the PAL system much higher than the NTSC the difference with the VHS was abysmal then the VHS prevailed.
Because of these videos I have imported the SL-HF3000 from Japan 😃
Same here I imported 3 to Australia they were so cheap and worked cheaper than the hf1000 and PAL units
Compare this with the shit of feather weight bluray DVDs of today
Just looking at the LED display brought childhood memories. Swell
pretty sure that's vacuum florescent, not LED
Great machine,a jewel, with jogging button,de luxe player,no one Blu Ray of today has got that presence,
take it care very much that awesome gadget.

I bought one for $10 and found some tapes in the swap meet even tho it’s hard to find tapes
Legend27 Just got 15 Sony L-750s off ebay for 22 shipped, just wait and you will find someone dumping them cheap.
The S VIDEO port that you mentioned says ¨CONTROL¨in Japanese, probably for a wired remote.
That's a wonderful machine, congratulations on such an awesome deal. Thanks for sharing this vid.
With the streamlining that's common these days, something is lost as the old equipment is just beautiful to look at.
You can't beat analogue sound and picture I've went back to VHS.
you have got yourself a new subscriber my friend
That is a beautiful thing, without a doubt.
Ray Glasser! Long time no see! xD
That's the VCR I always have wanted! xD
5:19 i love this thing sliding out
What a nice machine!

Beautiful Machine!! ❤
one time when i had my betamax player that thing was so beat up but worked like new. (remoove the cover fist!)
Did you plug in the Japanese plug into the American outlet?
can you find tapes for bata Max's anymore
Hello, It's amazing. I am happy with you. Could you fix the left wooden side? regards from Germany , Ronny

What blows my mind is the "PCM" audio input/output! Where digital audio tracks a regular thing on Beta?
+Josh Slatton
No. Bata HiFi recorded the analog stereo audio tracks at separate frequency on the helical video tracks.
Yes. You could record digital PCM audio using a PCB adapter that plugged into any VCR!

I Am Jealous...I Am A Beta Collector In The Uk And Would Kill For That Machine...The Best Unit I Have Is An SLHF-950..
Very Nice Ray!!!
Thanks! Hey, the 950 is a great machine too....I have the American counterpart, the SL-HF750.

it can play PAL video tapes? or NTSC only?, I face big problem with japanese camcorder.
This is NTSC only.

Beta and VHS tapes have totally different signals on them, they are not compatible at all. And, I did remove the remote from the bag and am using it!!
Wow thats a great machine! Do you know the year of production?
Yes.....1986. It was known as the Sony SL-HF1000 in America.
Hi Ray! did you sale your machine? please let know tanks
Very cool!
So cool.....Fan- Damn-Tastic!!!

Jack Sawyer Great machine. I have a pair of 1000's that I used in an edit suite. Still work as good as new after 30 years.
+12voltvids Beautiful machine, truly. To me, it even looks hi-tech, but thats only because I imagine technology as something other than touch screens.
Good for you, I am jealous; I wish I had one :(
Armen Staubach the tapes are hard to fin!

VHS is better ;D
No it's not, not in any respect. And no VHS machine had all the features that this glorious Betamax has!
The JVC HR-S10000 was pretty loaded
