  • The format war was raging on in the mid 1980's, and featured here was a VCR of epic proportions. Packed with features and digital effects, this VCR should have brought an end to VHS. It packed a powerful punch, but it simply didn't draw the rebels from their format, it drew them in even further!
    The databits channel is pleased to provide you with the best in new tech, vintage and oddity gadgets, media formats, repair projects, electronic experiments and restorations of thrift store finds. There are also many "how to" and instructional titles. The goal is to search through garage sales, antique malls and resale shops for gadgets you didn't know existed, electronic toys you had as a kid, stereo or turntables your parents used or a film projector your school used to teach you valuable lessons. Typically we produce one video a week with several trips to a thrift store per month. Sometimes, through research, an item is searched for on ebay and purchased for review. A list of some of the most popular items watched here on the channel are: record cutting on various materials, DLP television repairs, VCR's, Camcorders, turntables, record players, records, car reviews and dictation equipment.

    OMG! I love that machine! Betamax was such a superior format. Ages ago when I was still in school, one of my elect. Eng courses final exam was super simple. The instructor simply wheeled in a cart full of junk non-functional equipment and simply told us, "Pick an item. Any item. Fix it, pass my class. Unable to fix it? See you back here next year." And he simply walked out of the classroom. We could only fix items from parts that we can salvage. No purchased parts. Suffice to say, I ran and picked this guy. I seriously don't remember how I fixed this. I remember having access to the service manual from Sony on this model, but I just can't remember how I got it. When I was taking this class, internet was still in its infancy. No Google! Long story short, I passed that class and scored a super Beta HIFI deck.

      BTW professionals didn’t use Betamax because it was not broadcast quality. They used Umatic in the 70s and BetaCAM in the 80s - a completely incompatible format that ran the tape 5 times faster & recorded separated video

    My grandparents had a top-loader Betamax player in Bogota, Colombia in 1980. There was a Betamax tape rental store near their house. We watched Star Wars & Rocky Horror Picture Show hundreds of times each summer when we went down there. Those movies weren't even officially released for rental at that time!

    I remember my first VCR was a betamax back around 1984 and it weighed a ton, the first video rental movie I got for it was a horror movie called scanners. The peculiar loading mechanism for betamax tapes was known as 'omega wrap'. What amazed me at the time was that you could record a picture off of the television and play it back instantly, as this was back in the day when if you took a photo with a camera you had to take the film to be developed. I have only one surviving VCR left and it is a VHS/DVD player combi.

    • @mjouwbuis
      @mjouwbuis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, it was known as C wrap. Omega wrap as far as I know was only used in some reel-to-reel systems. The weight of your 1984 machine may have been peanuts compared to models from only a few years before. Betamax development really took off around 1982/1983.

    The "Faroudja" brand logo on the back of the machine indicates that Sony used a Faroudja chip for separating the 3.58 MHz color carrier from the luminance carrier during recording of composite and demodulated RF TV channels. In theory all Betamax could have an S-video output and your an see on the back of this deck that there is a covered up blank spot where they might have provided an S-video jack.

    Well, now wait a minute. I believe Beta had HiFi helical audio, meaning excellent analog audio. In addition, (at the same time), the Beta video track could be used as a huge amount of tape to connect a Sony PCM-F1 or similar digital unit, making this as you said, the first consumer or mass produced digital recording device. In 1982-1983 this was very special.

    • @solracer66
      @solracer66 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old Bete HiFi VCRs like the 870D, 750 and 950 are highly prized for this reason as many recording studios used Beta video tape for audio recording and have huge libraries that are too extensive and expensive to convert to digital yet too valuable to throw away leaving Beta VCRs as the only way to access old recordings.

    Betamax was a wonderful system. The build of the Sony equipment was always great. Unfortunately most consumers were happy with a lower quality. The quality of Betamax was only discernible in an A/B comparison on high end equipment properly adjusted. Back in the 70/80s Most consumers were content with their TVs with purple/green skin tones and lousy contrast. So, back in the 80s, before DVD, before HD, Before LCD/LED/OLED TVs and Before Satellite digital signal... VHS was Just right for the times. But it should also be noted that in Europe and parts of Asia, Betamax held a much wider portion of the VCR market

    The "Main" and "SAP" switch at 7:05 if the user set it to SAP without knowing what they are doing and when they record an over the air analog TV broadcast if the station doesn't have the SAP content or not broadcasting in MTS stereo at all there is no audio recorded on the linear track resulting in no audio if the tape is played on a non-Hi-Fi machines. Unlike the later VCR which the SAP is actually auto-SAP which means if there is no SAP content the linear audio automatically records the main audio. By the way, although that model can only record βII & βIII speed, it can also play (but not record) βI speed from early Betamax machines.

    15:03 that sensor is actually to detect the end of tape, rather than there's a tape present. Beta uses a metal foil leader at the beginning and end, and that's what that sensor detects. VHS on the other hand uses a transparent leader, and it shines a beam of light to detect end of tape.
    I think it was a late 80s fad, the digital effects things. Quite a few TVs had similar as well, like PiP, freeze-frame, mosaic, etc.

    We had a Sl-hf950 bought around 90, when the format was already dead all around europe. It was a marvelous piece of equipment. But it felt like having a Maclaren super sports car, but living in a remote area with dirt roads.….you could not rent any new film, buying tapes was miserable, as they were more expensive than vhs, and you knew they were lying in those shelves for years, so you were paying a premium but never getting a fresh tape….. as for superbeta tapes….. forget about it. In Madrid you could have them mainly in Sony Gallery Stores, paying a 50% more for a tape a 50% shorter (against a s-vhs jvc/tdk tape, also scarce but easier to get) . Remember in Pal territories we didnt had any LP for beta… So it was an disastrous movement as it was probably the best machine in some terms ( it had no nicam! we couldnt receive the same high quality sound or the hability to record a film in both spanish and english or whatever….) but it was more expensive for the mere edge (if so) over the vhs. We ended up buying a JVC s-vhs, we could rent anything, we could use a svhs tape to record in LP 8 hours of stuff when we were away for holidays or sleeping, we could have terrific sound and images (and dual laguage) for less and still exchange tapes at school (svhs at home tapes were only for backing up handycam family videos, and programming, We record them over and over with no degrading effects) I get some of you, betaheads are always complaining about quality and stuff, but to regular families, for a regular use, a nice top line vhs (stereo-hifi) or even more, a svhs using svhs tapes for some applications, was way way more convenient. For us, buying a beta, was a huge mistake!

Also there is no Sync insertion from the Digital part they verget to build in this. The Sync only came from Tape. We can see that the Horizontal Lines are not every time on the same position.

    My parents had a Sanyo Betacord when I was little. It was a model 4670. It began eating tapes so it was put in my great grandmothers attic until my high school days when we cleaned all our old stuff out of her attic. We brought it home and I tinkered with it but couldnt figure out what was wrong with it. It ended up in a dumpster at the nearest city dump. It wasnt a hifi model. some guy on ebay was sellingone of the very last sony models released in the US for like $650 on ebay. He said was manufactured in 93. I think $650 is rediculous for a beta vcr. I'd like to have a hifi beta vcr, but I dont want to spend an arm and a leg either. I'm wanting one thats already been serviced. I think $150 is plenty for one. I dont really care which name brand it is becuase sanyo and sony both made great products. I'm wondering what my chances are of finding one in the $150 or less price range?

    "It's the choo-choo train loading mechanism"! OM gosh, I belly-laughed when you said that! As you noted I also used 1 of my SL-HF units as an audio deck with frequency response of 20 - 20,000 Hz with just about 0% distortion figures and 85 db S/N ratio. The nomenclature for video quality was somewhat odd however between Beta and VHS and was based on picture resolution as expected, and noted, but the order of introduction of competing systems was a bit wrangled between SONY and JVC. As a base there was Beta 1 & VHS SP. Beta had better video ( and sound ) quality. Then along came Beta II & III and VHS SP, LP & SLP/EP (VHS SP AND BII video quality was equal but VHS won in the audio dept. (33 vs 20 mm/sec linear speed ). Then Super Beta & VHS HQ. As long as a VHS m/c had 2 of 4 technical video requirements met it had the HQ added, but Super Beta won out in video quality. Then Sony's hifi came out followed closely by VHS HIFI. Then finally came Beta ED (Extended Definition ) & Super VHS. These last 2 had video definitions just about equal to the video standard for NTSC broadcast.I always thought that there should have been a hybrid machine using Beta's larger head drum and VHS's tape wear friendly M-load system, but tape 's days were numbered. Thanks for the memories.

      Actually, it was the C wrap system used by betamax that was the most wear friendly. If you want to combine a large head drum and C wrap, look into the Philips VCR and VCR LP formats.

    I think Beta devices are rare because a) a lot of people tossed them out when VHS won b) many people nowadays think their old tech/junk is worth big money and sell their stuff on ebay, even if they're not likely to get much at all if not any. Back in the late 90's I saw a lot of beta pre recorded tapes but rarely a player/recorder. Even back then they were sort of rare.

    I have to admit the betamax machines do looked considerably more upmarket and have much better build than VHS players.
    The looks of the early to mid-80s Sony machines gives me hard on damn they made some sexy machines back then.
    Even if I have no use for it I'd just get the a betamax machine just for the looks alone!
    Too bad Sony was focused too much on Beta and Video 8 so they ended making the worst Laserdisc players.

    Awesome review and demonstration. But I can't consider Sony to be the "rebel" here. Sony ruled Japanese electronics in the 70's-80's and had the superior quality deck. But JVC won the tape format war by making VHS decks cheaper and then licensing manufacturing to any company who wanted to make VCR's. In the mid 80's you'd go to the store and see 15+ VHS decks and maybe 2-4 Betamax decks on sale, or less.

    • @databits
      @databits  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rebels I refer to were the Betamax users who stood by their format even while the VHS camp was getting all the new releases and more VCR models to choose from.

    The very first thing I noticed - in the first few frames - was there’s only composite video in on the front. What a wasted opportunity. If you’re going to create a SuperBeta machine (or SuperVHS for that matter) why would you skip an S-Video connector on any input or output? This may be able to record SuoerBeta, but doesn’t have any way of getting the better signal either in or out on any input or output.

  • @Andersljungberg

    I see a disadvantage and it's not the output that separated the crominance and luminance's signal

    We all knew that sony had the best player, I wanted one yes everyone wanted betamax. But why did we not buy betamax, becouse all movies that was released on video was on vhs lets say 99.99% of all stores did have vhs. So the choice was easy to select your player if you wanted to watch movies. And at that time we have one maybe two channels. So watching demo of these amazing betmax players yes I regret not buying one but I loved watching movies too.

It will not eject my Back to The Future tape and I'm not happy about that at all. I love the Beta format vs Vhs, but I haven't had the greatest luck at all with the players... smh. That is one heck of a Betamax machine! I'd like to get a high-end Beta VCR but the prices are insane! Right now I have a Sony SuperBeta SL-HFR70 which I was lucky to find at a local flea market for $20. I'd like to get the HFP-200 Stereo processor for it but the only ones on Ebay are around $100 in non-working condition! It is crazy how expensive some of the Betamax stuff is. I did however just find a good deal on a Sony Betamovie BMC-200. I've been wanting a Betacam for a long time but never came across one at a decent price. I got it for $25 but it doesn't have the AC adapter. I'm hoping I have one from another device that has the same voltage and amps that will work with it.

    Yeah, linear audio on vcrs is LIKE a cassette deck in function...but even a gpx boombox cassette deck sounds better then a mono linear vcr...
    I still make audio/dj'ed mixes on vhs hi fi...9 hrs tapes are great for parties, put whatever video you please over the audio , only trouble is they wear out far faster then cassette or open reel tape , any video noise is audible even if you don't record any video, the video drop outs will be audible , otherwise it's CD quality but with the presence and warmth of true analog ...and with a newer vcr with real time counter, very easy to cue...
