Nice doc on the Mayor. She was the first mayor I remember, being 6 yo when she assumed office. I remember thinking that she actually lived in Cabrini like as a regular resident. Absolutely. I worked on her campaigns in 1983 and 1987. I always admired her and her vision and hope for the city. People, especially the Chicago Tribune dogged her endlessly. I knew her and since we all have faults, I won't comment on anyone besides myself. So much of what downtown Chicago is is her legacy. Taste of Chicago started with Mayor Byrne. She loved Chicago and understood that as a woman, the first woman mayor, being fluffy or weak wouldn't get her anywhere. She understood the use of power from Mayor Daley. She wasn't a reformer as the liberals hoped for. She had a vision for the city. She knew that feelings would get hurt and people disillusioned. That never stopped her. The reason there is a train to Midway Airport and O'Hare Airport is due to Mayor Byrne. The North Loop redevelopment happened under her watch. I had a couple of "coffees" at my home for her when I lived in Chicago. I respected her "chin out" style and she never backed down from a fight. History is being kinder to her than the many were at the time of her administration. I was crushed in 1983 when dirty little Richie knew he was going to lose the 1983 primary badly. He refused to bow out because getting rid of Jane Byrne was more important than building Chicago for the 21st century. Dirty little Richie knew if Jane Byrne got reelected she would be a 20 year mayor and dirty little Richie couldn't have that. I never heard Mayor Byrne utter a racist word or taunt. She really was for One Chicago for All Chicago. May she rest in peace and be proud of her contributions that helped continue developing Chicago into a world class, first tier city.
By far my late dad’s favorite Chicago mayor. He went out of his way to attend her burial service when she passed. I wish he could’ve seen this one, along with the 2 great Daley docs that are on TH-cam.
Harold Washington’s critique of Byrne was spot-on. She had only herself to blame. A loose cannon herself, and one for a husband that she let play an active role in being the face of her administration, and her volatile temper and lack of poise are why she failed. She didn’t realize that with a term of x years, and lacking a huge base, she needed to work like crazy to form a base and work with people. instead she worked super hard to alienate people. recipe for failure.
It really takes me back to see her exiting her apartment building at the 39:43 mark. In 1981, I was in my early 30s and single, and rented a studio unit one floor above her in that building. A couple of times when I was leaving for work, she and her two bodyguards got on the elevator, and we rode down together, just the four of us. No one spoke, but I sure wanted to. Very interesting documentary. She sounded like she was a very divisive person who helped to polarize the city and break promises. But like that guy said, those are the kinds of people who get statues and streets named after them.🤷
Becoming Mayor, of a major city, as the city of Chicago, was Not an easy task for either... Mayor, Jane Byrne, or Mayor, Lori Lightfoot. Both women, had major challenges and obstacles, facing them during their elected terms, in running a City, such as Chicago. Whether, in preference, one Mayor, over the other. Both women, have had their share of major challenges.
I watch this not because I wanted to but because I had to. I lived in Chicago during all three of these administrations. I remember when she moved into Cabrini greens I went to Cabrini greens once. I was robbed at gunpoint I wasn't there 5 minutes. People liked her in the beginning but later they didn't. I think obstacles were thrown in front of her because she was getting into people's business. Black suffered a lot during dailies administration. The vertical slums is exactly what it was piss in the hallways, roaches. Gun violence was ridiculous, as a black man and a child I had to leave Chicago I couldn't stay there I knew I would die. Chicago is a tough City it's a beautiful city Chicago is a city that administratively is run by blacks it's the best looking city in America make New York City look like a mouse trap. I appreciate mayor bryne she really cared about the city. She knew it from the ground up much like Trump. If we had her running for a woman president she would be worth every penny God bless you Jane God bless you. I understand more about you from this documentary. I'm proud that you are a woman and I'm proud that you love Chicago. I wish more of you were around God bless America God bless you. Most people don't know this, but Lori Lightfoot is the younger sister of Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. In fact, Gordon wrote the 1976 hit "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" about Lori, as she is both a wreck and a sinking ship. True story...
We called her Baby Jane and she had problems. She came into prominence as Commissioner of weights and Measures, in which she oversaw the cab companies, and private buses licensed by the city. There is not enough room on this page to detail the corruption that went on. It was in place when she took over and was in place when she left. She knew nothing about the cab companies and never learned, The reason she got the comm. job was the former one got caught and went to prison. she was a heavy drinker and married an alcoholic. the stunt she pulled at Cabrini Green where she moved in for a while was laughable. She rolled in on Daley's coattails. Still, she was tough.
I think that she was impatient maybe not power she wanted things done fast and didn't realize that there was contemplates and that might have frustrated her I can't entirely agree with your statement but I can't disagree with it either because we don't have enough facts.
The men wouldn’t let her succeed , even her own party. She was anti corruption as well & in those days in Chicago they weren’t having it. She ran so others can fly. & that casino idea? Other cities ran with it by the 90’s & did well as a result. Then as a result said Chicago couldn’t have a casino because it would draw all the customers from those smaller cities casinos … she had the answer all along.
First She backed Carter, but then backed Ted Kennedy.Reagan took Illinois and even Cook County abd other Democratic Strongholds. But Byrne and Later Washington had to eat crow when candidates they backed lost big time.
I agree. Chicago is an amazing place with a fascinating history. However, the city always had aggressive, strong leadership. Mayors set the tone for their administration and offer a vision for the city. Lori Lightfoot is a wonderful person with a good heart. She doesn't have the personal characteristics of strength, grit, determination, and an enthusiasm for leadership. The city is tanking. It's time fresh blood and perspective.

Thank you so much for reaching out. Blessings to you and your family. RIP Mayor Jane M Byrne.
Very interesting documentary. She sounded like she was a very divisive person who helped to polarize the city and break promises. But like that guy said, those are the kinds of people who get statues and streets named after them.🤷
Chicago must be a very difficult city to run.
Must be something in the water here i am also from chicago illinois
There’s no flavor like the Chicago Flavor!
And I’ve been to every State including Canada 🇨🇦.
The Jimmy Carter of Chicago, both in over their heads.
Becoming Mayor, of a major city, as the city of Chicago, was Not an easy task for either...
Mayor, Jane Byrne,
or Mayor, Lori Lightfoot.
Both women, had major challenges and obstacles,
facing them during their elected terms, in running a City, such as Chicago.
Whether, in preference, one Mayor, over the other.
Both women, have had their
share of major challenges.
Burke and Vrdoliak lol they controlled the purse strings in Chicago and nobody was able to get rid of them until over 40 years later
Ha. That's "my mom" .
Badass person.
Ain't gonna get a 'Lightfoot" interchange,
Man, even back then she was dealing with a teachers union strike and other ones as well.. Nothing new under the sun.
The Reincarnation of Jane Byrne; WGN’s BRONAGH TUMULTY ❤❤❤!!! 🥰😍
One of the best mayor's ever, who was the first woman to be a mayor of a major city.
Thank you thank you for all the sacrifices that we don't know about. And God bless you 🙏
I wonder if she would still be a Democrat
🤣
@@kylejimmerson9985 the money..all about that.
Got to love America.
The more things change... the more they STAY THE SAME... good luck Chicago... 🇺🇸
Was a Great Documentary until you showed LORI LIGHTHEADED.... 💯
I met at the opening of TASTE OF CHICAGO I FOUND HER A GREAT LADY
If you don't know anything. That's great. Because you get to dig your teeth into everything.
0:34 My Hero!
I SALUTE YOU mayor Byme,
The real axis of evil the two Eds 😂😂
And now Ed Burke is under investigation. The irony.
She tried and l belive she meant well for people but power got to her head
I think that she was impatient maybe not power she wanted things done fast and didn't realize that there was contemplates and that might have frustrated her I can't entirely agree with your statement but I can't disagree with it either because we don't have enough facts.
Like any politician get what you want then f everyone
Jane did the "you people" routine at 42:40.
2:30 👍🏼
Whomever made this shouldn't put lightfoot the wrost mayor of chicago.
Amazing mayor ! RIP. One of a couple Democrat politicians I respect
She got the snow plowed
"Honkeyfest" 1982?! Now that they have one of their own in power, Mayor Lightfoot, Chicago has never been in worse condition.
Lol...
I had a t-shirt that said "Honkeyfest", bought by my older brother. On the back it said "Thanks Jessie " lol...
I would wear it to my SECOND GRADE CLASS at my school on the Northside.
Not a word said..
@@stevenhickey326 I'd say Lori is a little humbled, but, it never stays that way for long. It ll be "the white man s fault." No Lori, it's because you sucked!
All true 100% Lightfoot doesn't do anything. MAYOR BURNS is what important to her is faith, family, country.
I remember all this on news I was 10. I didn’t know she was Democrat. Sounds like she was a good woman and cared about people. But was sabotaged by her own party🤦♀️democrats. 🙏
she plays the, or a piano more, or less like i myself being of my person types as in fairly well, &, but then other than that i being of person of my same self have always kind of wondered what was up with that move into the cabrini public housing projects, & as to whether, or not she herself was supposedly carving out some, or such new territory for from well-to-do, to rich caucasians, or white preppys, or the baby-boomers, or much rather than instead of for hippies, or flower-children(formerly beatniks), or whether, or not she herself had really done that as a supposed, or so-called Misdemeanor 💪🏿🫡💯❤️
I have a college buddy who grew up in Chicago and he said that Byrne was a complete disaster as mayor.
Hmm, living in Chicago under Mayor Byrne was less than pleasant. This is an unbalanced view.
Unfortunately she was not a very good mayor
👍
The Democrat machine..
The original template on how to destroy an American city.
Nobody is worrying about what Lightfoot is wearing. They're just trying to figure out how such a hideous beast walks on two legs.

What I took from watching this is the disenfranchised voters of Chicago continue to vote Democrat even though nothing ever changes. The true definition of insanity.
It'disgusting the way that young black man jump out in fron of her to say you'll be defeated. Like an animal. And the only reason she got defeated because the other guy was black. It's a shame that in a great city of Chicago black voters decide who will be mayor. This woman really tried to help them. Even though they need to be saved from themselves.
Wow! Racist, loud and stupid!
She got defeated because HW was smart and articulate, understood politics and represented all. Research him on a credible site.
If u don't know what happened and u weren't there stop talking. Harold Washington was loved by all black and white he actually seemed to care to bad he couldn't live longer. I remember they announced his death while I was in school and on my way home that afternoon every body was honking their car horns and turning on their car lights in solidarity and mourning . Chicago could have definitely been a different place had he lived
What are you talking about? That should decide who the mayor is and they can ask whatever they want to. You need to be out in the country. Not the city.
