That was the real tv news on France's biggest network TF1. I think it has about 7 million viewers... but they often end the news with interviews with artists and stuff... not performances though...it almost runs a full hour and the more south you go in Europe you see this (in Italy they sometimes end with cooking tips ;-)). And yes she probably treated him like royalty, his last album (8 years ago) made him king of French language music and then he suddenly disappeared... his comeback was huge news and the lyrics of his song are a pretty good answer to why I guess.

It was all set up and prepared though, obviously. The newsreader explained it on her twitter afterwards.

@@JustinCase99999 obviously. I don't think they tried to hide that or would not understand why anyone would think that it was spontaneous? But the lyrics do provide and answer to her last question.

@@squarebelgium To be honest for one second when he started singing I thought he'd gone crazy singing instead of speaking 😁. Then I figured "ooohh it was all planned. Well done. You had me there." Quite unique and innovative PR I have to admit.

It's called "Hell" (L'enfer) and it's about suicide, depression and anxiety. He was on tour in Africa with Racine Carrée and was given the anti malarial drug Lariam, which causes side effects of extreme depression and suicidal thoughts. It has since been investigated. He had been working constantly for years and two straight tours. Over 200 concerts worldwide for his second CD, Racine Carrée. His brother, Luc, realized something was terribly wrong with him while in the Congo and cancelled the rest of the tour except for Kigali, Rwanda which was delayed 6 months. Paul Van Haver, his real name, was born in Belgium to a Flemish woman and a Rwandan Tutsi architect who had been at University in Brussels. Soon after Paul was born his father was pressured to return to Rwanda by his father who had financed his studies in BB Elgin. So Stromae grew up by without knowing his father. Because in the mid 90's there was a huge genocide in Rwanda and a million Tutsi we're murdered, hacked to death by Hutus. Stromae's father was one of the dead. His father was never found. Stromae had only been there as a very young child briefly and so the Kigali concert was very important for him, to pay hommage to his father and to meet family he had never met before. He made it there 4 months later. But it hit him very hard seeing the names of the Tutsi dead on a wall. That was his last concert. He had always planned to take a break after Racine Carrée tour, but the extreme depression and anxiety caused by a combination of Lariam and overwork almost stopped Stromae from being a solo performer again. Stromae created his own genre. He has two previous albums"Cheese" and then "Racine Carrée". He also has "Les Leçons" which is how he marketed himself right at the start. They are brilliant. Highly recommend those too. He is my absolutely favourite performer. His interviews in French or in English are very interesting and reveals a beautiful, humble soul. Enjoy! I hope this gives you a little background. He studied Drums, piano and musical theory and later cinematography.

To be clear, Stromae didn't do this for publicity, rather then to share his experience on a platform that has a far broader audience then his music genuinely has. This song was dedicated not to his fans, but to everyone struggling. Bringing it for the first time on the french national channel in front of millions is an amazing way to make his powerfull statement.

Always surprises me how he is so unknown in the UK and the USA when everyone in Europe from Barcelona to Amsterdam, from Paris to Moscow and in many African countries he is considered a superstar. Please checkout his last album with brilliant music and equally brilliant videos. Most of the songs to checkout have already been mentioned by other posts here.

He has so many great songs; anything on Racine Carrée really but especially Tous les Mêmes, Papoutai, Formidable, Carmen, Quand c'est, Alors on Dance (which is like his biggest hit if I recall correctly). He came back a few months ago with 'Santé', which is amazing, and please check out the video of L'Enfer, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. He's so sincere

Do you think you've been tricked and the whole thing is the video of the song? In fact, France has been tricked because this was a real live interview on France's biggest channel, at 8.30pm, she's the host for national news.

Live concert from Racine Carrée tour from Montreal is perfection. It has subtitles and you won't regret one second. A brilliant performer.

Did you notice that very gentle work with camera, lights and graphics on the wall behind him? Btw. in the last seconds of the song there is audible audio from monitors (speakers) in the studio when sound engineer brings interview microphones back (btw Stromae has 2 microphone ports on him). There is audible small sound of his mouth (tongue, clapping, ...). Apparently one of them has coroid charasteristic or something like that, that's why there is not monitor audio so present. So it's really live and this was live at 8pm, which is prime time. Big up to Stromae as well as to the people behing the camera (lighning operator, camera operator, sound engineers, ...). It seems easy but make it in this quality, it needs some perparations. And they had time for that and that's nice! :)

Actually, it s the 1st time in history of french tv news there has been a live song performance. Melting entertainment or commercial event is not a thing in french news.

This is a real TV news show. Stromae is a genius. Check out his new album multitudes. Fils de Joie is another masterpiece of his. He’s a real singer songwriter. He just came out of a 7 year hiatus. Fame, malaria drugs got to him, and he married and had a kid, so is super happy, despite some harsh introspective songs. His wife and him have their own production company, Mosaert. Both his name and Mosaert are anagrams of the word Maestro. His father was killed in the Hutu-Tusti genocide in Rwanda when he was young. He was Tutsi. His mom is Belgian Dutch speaking, but he is bi-lingual, French and Dutch plus English of course.

Also, everything Stromae is very intentional in everything he does. This was a real newscast on a national news station in France, and he very much planned it to happen that way.

Thanks for the comparison with David Byrne. I hadn’t thought about that but they are indeed similar in a way. They are both very theatrical and out of the box in a pleasing way. Btw you should see more of him, he’s absolutely brilliant!

Popped up on my feed so here goes...
Stromae pronounced Strom-I like the letter name or pronoun I.
Song l'enfer means hell. It's based on the artist's own experience of severe depression that was caused by anti-malaria medication while on tour in Rwanda about 7 or 8 years ago. Having been hugely successful in Europe and Canada Stromae seems to have been continously on tour for a few years but due to his illness he cancelled the tour and more or less disappeared in person.
Stromae is more than a musician he is a performance artist and his lyrics always have less obvioud meaning beneath the surface and there's often a twist in that many words have a double meaning. There's some surprising content out there.
