How We're Growing TONS of Cherries in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA! | Planting Low Chill Cherry Trees

  • Cherries and other stone fruit are often out of reach in warm climates because of required "chill hours". These often require a winter chill hour count of 600-800 hours at temps between 32 and 45 degrees F. That would NEVER work in a warm climate like Southern California where we usually get only a couple hundred chill hours. That has changed! I planted a couple recently introduced "low chill" cherry trees named "Royal Lee" and "Minnie Royal", who reliably produce with 200-300 chill hours and pollinate each other. In this video, I share more on how this works, as well as planting the new "Royal Crimson" cherry which serves as another pollinator for both other cherries, as well as producing a great crop itself.

    Planting low chill cherry trees makes growing your own cherry accesible in a warm climate like Southern California. Learning how to grow cherries isn't that much different than other stone fruit. For our climate the cherry tree we selected is "minnie royal" cherry along with a "Royal lee" cherry tree. In this video I planted a royal crimson sold by Dave Wilson Nursery. Using cherry tree pruning, I made room for the royal crimson cherry, in the same grouping as minnie royal lee cherry. Keeping the trees so close is high density planting, sometimes called backyard orchard culture (similar to what's seen on iv organic or with DWN's Tom Spellman). My orchard no has 60 or so orchard trees, and all are orchard fruit trees. The Minnie royal cherry tree is used for cherry pollination which is a must when planting cherry trees like minnie royal. A backyard orchard is so rewarding, filling up the space with tasty fruit trees. If you haven't been planting fruit trees in backyard, don't feel intimidated. Just plan on a couple and do it!

    Hey Cameron, Im not sure if youve learnt this yet but when you plant a tree you need ot face the graft union NORTH. It essentially helps protect a "weak spot" from burning in summer

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      YES! I ideal try to plant like that, although the direction of my desired branches wins out. There are definitely some tradeoffs when close-planting trees. I hope to minimize any possible danger by whitewashing.

    • @farmergavin6919
      @farmergavin6919 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hear you that tree shape plays a big role in how we want them to look in our garden. I live in the coachella Valley so whitewashing is essential and I’m an organic Gardner so ‘IV organic’ make an organic non toxic paint. I can tell you I see a huge difference in young new growth that gets scorched in our hot July/august months vs the painted branches. I love natural bark but after about 4 yrs the tree grows so big all the paint essentially naturally strips off. Once you have a good canopy, the tree will shield itself. Good luck!

    What should I do for shot hole disease on my minni royal and royal lee cherry leaves ?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll want to use an organic copper-based fungicide like: amzn.to/3uMzFc3 . The key is to begin spraying as soon as new leaves emerge in spring and continue spraying at 7-10 day intervals until the leaves are fully expanded. Young tender leaves in early spring are the most vulnerable. If your leaves are fully developed, you'll want to be sure to treat according to the instructions at the end of this season (when 90%) of the leaves have dropped, and just before bud-break next season.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do use shadecloth, and definitely do on the youngest cherries. They seem to need more water and shade during the hottest months, or else the foliage takes a beating. Here is more on this from me: www.thebusygardener.com/protecting-plants-from-too-much-sun/

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely prune them now! I wouldn't clear out the middle of the tree, because the leaves provide shade for the bark. THat being said, pruning off height right now is a big help. You should consider painting your young trees with IV Organics amzn.to/2U9tezo . Here is a vid I just made about this: th-cam.com/video/NmWmjgq7cIM/w-d-xo.html Good luck!

      They've killed enough of my trees even when the trees are 12 feet tall. They've destroyed our front lawn. I've tried everything in me to be the nice guy and merciful but not anymore. I use traps now in the lawn, and any new tree is getting a gopher cage or chicken wire surrounding the entire planting hole. So labor intensive especially when planting on a hillside. • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It'll add a few years to fruiting, and the fruit won't necessarily have the same desirable chaarcteristcs as the original fruit. You're generally going to be MUCH happier purchasing a tree that's been grafted onto a solid rootstock, and where you know exactly what the fruit will be like. But you can plant a seed if you want to see the process, too. Maybe you'll get a good variety out of it!

      That's a great question! These trees, while considered "low chill" probably need at least SOME chill hours in order to properly set fruit. I have a Minnie Royal , Royal Lee, Royal Crimson, they are about a year old and look good. I also have a Stella that is two years old but I think it is dying this year , it is still green but the buds dry out at soon as they try to open . By the way , your tree is beautiful!!

      So cool you've got this same planting! That does sound weird with your Stella 😢. Does it have any foliage? Or is that what's drying out? I'd give it this season to see what happens. Good luck on that!

      It would take a few to several years to get fruit from seed. And the fruit you get wouldn't be identical to the fruit you got the seed from. It's like how kids are similar but distinct from their parents.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Planting during dormancy is great, but it's far more critical when you're dealing with bare root trees. As long as the rootball is intact, no issue with planting or pruning now. It's DEFINITELY better to plant in the ground now than to give it a whole season in a 5 gallon pot. Good question! Thanks for watching!

    How long have your original two trees been in the ground? It was so hard to watch you prune all those branches off with cherries on them 😳. Lots of people have tried these tress in AZ but only a few have been successful that I know of. Also it's taken them over 5 years get cherries.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pruning and thinning fruit are the two hardest things to do in the orchard! The original two trees have been in the ground for 5 years. They're planted on a standard "Mazzard" rootstock which is known to take a few years to fruit. Rumor has it there is a new rootstock on the horizon that supports fruiting in less time.
