The way Fallout: New Vegas handled their boxart was subtle but notable. The previous games just had a CG render of the dude in the strongest armour as their boxart, but NV managed to pay homage to this style whilst making something different. Sure, it's the dude I'm the coolest armour, but this time it's not power armour, and you can see New Vegas in the background, luring you into the world. Fallout 4 then fucked it up by just having it by having it be armour again. At its core it's a tiny change but really shows the amount of care that went into the game as a whole
Hearing the music from the jungle track on Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver made my ears perk up like a German Shepherd... that games soundtrack is burned in my memory like a box of crayons left on the dashboard of the family minivan on a July afternoon
The Resistance 3 box always stuck with me as a later box art that was genuinely great. Stuck with me despite never even playing it! Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age also has incredible reverse art.
I agree with the sentiments about boxarts devolving over time. Brand recognition is more marketable and promotes the game better. Although I think a heavy influence on changing boxart is digital storefronts. Sometimes a simple mockup captures the eye more than a whole landscape shot. Although personally I like that elaborate stuff. If they can mix simplicity and a good background, like Elden Ring or Subnautica, I'm all for it. Still think they can be better for sure imo. Reverse cover art is best art
Excellent video! I think my favorite box art has to be the original Kingdom Hearts 1 on the PS2. The huge heart-shaped moon in the night sky shining a faint light onto all of the characters with the town in the background all just looks amazing in my opinion.

The Neo Geo AES had some amazing cover art as well. Fatal Fury 3, Baseball Stars 2 and Crossed Swords for example. Also remember NES having some fine art work, like Double Dragon II, Super C and Wrath of the Black Manta. There's loads more, like the classic big boxes for old PC games. First coming to mind are Starlancer, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Planescape: Torment. There were also the arcades and while not box cover art, some cabinets were a piece of art themselves. Standard uprights like Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Samurai Shodown II, or bigger ones using peripherals such as Galaxy Force and Beast Busters. There also were the posters, ads, flyers, magazines, books and comics and the like, and with thousands of games released, it's a huge collection of art.
My favorite video game box art is probably the one for the game Psychonauts. The art style of it is just so eye catching and has so many interesting things happening in it without ever feeling like the devs are desperate to make you buy the game. Yet despite that the game sold poorly at launch compared to games with the same exact black shadow of a man over white background box art
The sad reality being.... Box art needs boxes. Are we entering a post-physical media world? It's hard to quantify - and I for one, would deeply miss box art. Even the bad ones. Food for thought.
You gotta look up the Amnesia: Dark Descent box art which was so horrendously bad it actually ruined one of the monsters in the game by making it look like a mutated duck and put the "protagonist" on there with a lantern raised and a really confused expression on his face. This is especially bad when you think about all of the amazing unique and unsettling set pieces in the game they could have simply used the copy/paste CGI method on and made a MUCH better cover. YOU'RE NEVER EVEN SUPPOSED TO GET A GOOD LOOK AT THE MONSTERS IN-GAME SO WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY BLAST IT ON THE BOX ART IN BRIGHT LIGHT!?

I personally enjoyed the toy army men games for Nintendo 64, I feel like the box art was really cool I remember one with a toy soldier and a spider that really impacted me as a kid making me want to have it so bad at the local Hollywood video!

This feels like a video that would make sense if it was 2014, very unfortunately it’s 2024 now and most games are digital downloads. I miss the era that physical games were relevant much less the box art.

No one saw the box art 40 years ago because 99% of the people just played pirated games and saw the box art only in magazines. But yes some of these covers a peaces of art, really. And! In my 8 year old eyes the game sometimes ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE THE BOX ART. Yes. It helped.
