The benefits an Eric Haugen gear review or demo are wonderful: Eric's stellar playing, genuine interest and intelligence in learning about the gear being reviewed, high integrity and honesty in assessing gear, and always thorough, engaging, and warm in sharing his thoughts. The only downside? Eric is so flippin' good as a musician that I could hand him a shoebox strung with rubber bands and he'd make it sound fantastic.

Chasing Heather Crazy! And that is a great-sounding amp. The price is not for everyone, but it's not the primary consideration for everyone. There are plenty of cheaply made amps in the world built by exploited labor. Some people want to support locally made products and pay people fairly for their time and labor.
Agreed. There's also been a drastic change in how we buy music gear over the years - in the 60's and 70's, you were rarely likely to have more than ONE good amp - for instance, a Fender Deluxe Reverb in 1965 (made in the USA at the time, of course) was over $2000, once you adjust the 60's price for inflation. We've gotten so used to things being relatively inexpensive, and now even a non-gigging home hobbyist player can afford a stable of amps made overseas; that's a *wonderful* thing, but there's still volumes (heh) to be said for locally-made, higher-end amps that do something uniquely wonderful and just exude care and charisma. If it really speaks to you, you might not ever need another amp besides this one! Over the long term, that's a bargain indeed.

The opposite end of the spectrum to the Supro the other week. This is glorious and I, like you lean heavily to the Fender end of the spectrum normally. The best tones I have heard in a long time.

Oh man, I love Carr amps, Steve always builds killer unique circuits. I had seen this one and a few clips and thought it looked cool but wasn’t too into it as I’m usually more into American style amps too…but after hearing this demo, yeah now I want one. Sounds so good and love that tremolo!

These are the kind of reviews I like. When someone who knows what they’re talking about, and isn’t trying to make a living off reviews, is genuinely just excited enough to show a new piece of kit. That being said, I’m a millennial school teacher and someone in my family would have to die and leave me $$$$ for me to justify spending the price tag. If someone passes though and the check clears, this would definitely worth the cash 😂

Is a Mercury Marshall tones?
@@taylorfusion I have the mk1, which doesn't sound particularly Marshall-y to me... but it's capable of that kind of thing. I tend to play it more clean, and it sounds really great on the edge of breakup. It goes fully saturated but I just don't use those sorts of sounds that much, so can't speak to whether it's good at that or not. The mk2 version (Mercury V) seems much more Marshall-oriented, has separate hi/lo volume controls etc.

I love it too. Your demo is great and I wish you could demo other Carr's amps: Super Bee, Skylark, Mercury V
A great amp along with some GBV, Isbell, Captain Beyond and others, cannot beat that. The second album from Captain Beyond, Sufficiently Breathless, is pretty good by the way. There is Santana like elements all over the LP.

All of Steve’s newer amps (Telstar, Skylark, Super Bee, Merc V, Bel-Ray) have such different character while producing similarly chimey, chewy, overtone-laden, smooth distortion. He’s nailed holy grail edge-of-breakup and distortion tones on these smaller amps, all attained without making you go deaf.
From a fellow North Carolinian, great sounding amp and nice demo with the Love "Forever Changes" song. I might look into swapping my Dr. Z Maz. Or something.

Great tones, but at 16 watts I would have headroom concerns gigging with it. If it has built in attenuator why not make it a 30 watt? Also, is there a foot switch to go switch between tones? That’s what I love about my Rivera Venus 6 one tap from Blackface to Marshall.

@@davidLPSTThanks, I contacted them this morning and they’re hoping to have the Bel Ray in stock in Jan / Feb 2024. Priced around £3,000 depending on the the US / GBP exchange rate. A lot to fork out for an amp but then it does sound amazing based on Eric’s video.

Eric, Thanks so much for this demo. This is the Tele sound I have in my head but never seem to put together. Im hoping to pick up the Carr Bel Ray. I have a question on the Tele pickups in this clip. Does this Tele have a Tom Brantley pickup set ( if so which set)or are these fender stock or something else? This tone really inspires me and I really appreciate your playing and this post. It makes me want to play more. Appreciate your time and talent.

I've watched the full video in teh past, so apologies as I don't recall all of your thoughts on this...hows the clean channel? Is there some head room to run some drives pedals into it? Not full clean, but clean enough to use with a pedal with a medium hitting drummer. A bit cleaner than your chop chords on chasing heather at 5:50.
Oh yeah In high power mode this this is plenty loud and clean!

How many watts is this amp? What is the price going to be if you know? I’m here in Charlotte nc and would very much be interested in these down the line. Sounds soooo good

Strange, back in the early sixties the best speakers were Goodman or Wharfdale, second best came Celestion, and very few people liked the cheap Fane soles, strange how things have changed.
Fane spkrs, not as autocorrect in its wisdom thought.
Fane were the high headroom speakers used in the Hi-Watt amps. Floyd, The Who, Zeppelin, etc… they were good enough for them…
I don’t know why Eric would play modern indie rock when we want to know how it sounds doing classic British rock. Clapton, Hendrix etc. He did do a little Who to be fair.
