The coaching staff for OU that season was legendary. In addition to Bob Stoops and his brother Mike, they had Brent Venables, Mark Mangino, Steve Spurrier Jr., Cale Gundy, Jonathan Hayes, Jackie Shipp, and Bobby Jack Wright. Those guys took a very young and unranked team to a perfect season and national championship in 2000.

How beautifully poetic that OU signals its return to the elite of college football by kicking the living shit out of the Horns. That's the stuff dreams are made of---or nightmares in Texas' case.
As this game progressed, it almost seemed surreal to Sooner fans at the Cotton Bowl that day. Texas had pretty much dominated OU during the 90s. Then came this unforgettable game; a game that was essentially over with before halftime. A young Bob Stoops (and his equally young staff) made a statement that day that major changes were coming. During the Stoops years, the Sooners began to dominate the Horns again. Great memories.
This game will forever be inshrined at OU as the BEST Red River Rivalry game of all time. OU dismantled and set fire to UT. And the announcer forever made the best comment in a RRR. " The eyes of Texas have been BLACKENED!!"
OU taught Mack Brown a lesson on this game. You're going to prepare your team for this rivalry or we are going to kick your ass like this every year. And other than 03, Texas has come prepared for every RRS. But Mack remembers this game.
I believe we woke up in this game to be who we truly are then other teams followed like Alabama Texas and Ohio State Miami Clemson every pinnacle power will wake up every once and a while.

In addition, the university has an enrollment of over 700 National Merit Scholars, making it first per capita among public universities.
Wow, they won the game 42 - 7, that was quite a route. To score 42 points in a game is pretty fantastic. PS what do you mean by "(First Half Highlights)"? This couldn't have just ben the first HALF, no. Surely Texas wouldn't give up 42 points in ONE HALF!, right? Texas is a great team, right?
Hey I remember that game. That was when the Texans playing for ou beat the Texans playing for A&M. LOL! But no, I was talking about the 41-13 ass kicking that the whole country was watching. You know the 2013 Cotton Bowl;)
@@co1003 So why do so many quality Texas recruits choose OU? I think it's probably because UT has lost that image of the tough Texas cowboy. In fact, Austin is now one of the gayest cities in the U.S.
I was at that game. OU could have literally have scored 100. The Sooners didn't score a point in the 4th quarter, and they didn't throw a pass in the last 25 minutes of playing time. With 8 minutes left in the game, OU's quarterback took a knee while deep in A&M territory! After the game, Bob Stoops admitted that he told his team to go at "half-speed" when the score reached 77-0. Amazingly, I attended another game many years earlier when OU also beat Missouri 77-0!
Texas is, without a doubt, a "top tier" team --Stewart Mandel calls them "Kings" (Bama, Flo, FSU, Miami, Michigan, NEb, ND, Ohio St, Okla, PSU, Tenn, Texas, USC). Of those, considering talent/NC appearances etc, Michigan is overwhelming the biggest underachiever: 1 (shared) NC since the '50s. Texas is the second-biggest. Three of four NCs came in '60s (OU has 7), and 1 picked by president. You make the point yourself. All that talent, translates to relatively little. Oh, please keep Mack Brown.
@Big12Longhorn Actually, the reason there is no market for an NFL team in Oklahoma is because many economic analysts found that much of the football base was dedicated to the OU sooners football program. And those same fans when asked if they would rather spend money on tickets for OU games or tickets on a possible NFL team, most said the Sooners. I'm a Steelers fan by the way.

Actually, in my opinion, college football is much more exciting than NFL. OU would rule over a pro team here anyway. It's also proven true for the NBA. OU is, and will always be bigger than the Thunder. And just for the record, as far as the NFL goes, I'm a Chicago Bears fan. Probably not the norm for this area.
Teams lose games. OU won NCs in the '50s, '70s, '80s, '00s. They will again. OU, and Texas too, will always be relevant. They are tradition teams. 'Kings,' per Mandel. It doesn't matter that OU lost to A&M (not the first time) or that Texas lost to UCLA 3-66, or that OU lost three NCs since winning their last. Or that Mack Brown claps better than he coaches. But Texas, with their 'talent,' should have won much more. That's what I'm saying.

Texas is the second-biggest underachiever in college football of the "top programs," ones with big recruiting classes and national cache. (Only Michigan is -- slightly -- worse.) Texas had a president give them a NC in the late '60s, & Pete Carroll the other, when he chose to ignore @ Heisman players on a critical 4th down to put the game away. Fine, Texas won in '05, but it was that call. That's just not enough for the last 50 years. OU has won all seven in just over that period. Best of luck.
@soonerscott2007 I totally agree with that; Sooner football is WAY more exciting to watch than the NFL. I would pick a college game over an NFL game 9/10 times.
