  • I rescued this car after it sat without an engine for several years. I put in a spare engine and repaired and restored everything, so now it's time to see if it will run.

Thanks for the comments. The steering box was left exposed to the weather and likely got water in it which seized the valve. Repairs to come.

I have never seen a car turn hard left by itself like that before . I have always been a fan of the speedometer and huge pedals in the old mopars , cool cruiser.

Your spool valve on the steering gear box is not biased correctly. If you loosen the spool valve housing it it will slide. This adjustment is touchy. I watched my poor old service manager get pulled into a old Desoto when he stuck his arm through the webbing of the steering wheel while starting it. I use to raise the front wheels and start the engine. When adjusted correctly the steering wheel should not move when you start the engine.

Lol, the reaction to everything working and no major disaster at initial start. Nice kick, that.

You're 47?? Wow man you look alright for nearly 50. Love the cloud of rust that sprays out of the muffler toward the end lol

Awesome job Tyler!! Really happy to see this mopar brought back to life, reminds me of the '73 Dart Sport days. I had a similar issue in my '74 Gold Duster with the power steering, found out the spool valve on top of the PS gear box where the high pressure hose goes into had some junk underneath it, cleaned it up and had to mess with aligning the shaft back in it's sweet spot to omit the self-steering lol. Keep up the great work boss!

Technically, I cheated a little. I would have to order paint and I wasn't sure how much I needed. So, I acted on a recommendation to use Duplicolor Detroit Diesel Alpine green and it worked great...plus it's available at the corner parts store.

I agree even in a big heavy car like this one it is a good performer and in a lightweight car it can be a screamer due to the relatively short stroke. Chrysler made millions of them.

It makes the 318 in the white Fury seem like a 4 cylinder. Lots of torque.

I think the centering valve in the steering gear might be stuck in the full left position. Growing up we had a 1979 Chrysler 300 that would blow o-rings in the centering valve. My dad would replace them constantly and I remember him tapping on the valve to center the wheel . When he tapped it would automatically turn the wheel to full lock where it was an adjustment to get it centered by tapping it was the weirdest thing I ever saw. He bought that car brand new and it started doing this after 5 years or so. The transmission failed at 40k miles and the Lean Burn computer failed on it as well. My dad always bought Mopars in spite of the problems he always had with them.

Beetles and gas fires, go together like peanut butter and jelly. Had a 70 and it flamed up twice on me, nothing bad, just kept moving backward, replacing rubber lines--I was floored how there never was a hose clamp on those. Any way, congrats on the refresh and first start!

Excellent work man!! This is one of the best videos of this kind that I've seen. It's honest, when you really do "mechanicin" on cars as a hobby you get what you just went through on this video. I love a 66 300! Im Subscribed

Overall great job Tyler! I’ve watched everyone of these all the way through, you’ve done great work. Nice to see a regular guy like me do great work without spending a gazillion dollars on fancy tools, parts and the vehicle itself. Congrats on the start-up, looking forward to seeing the first drive! Any updates on Phil?

The best part of this video: Turn on the subtitles and watch it interpret the engine noises as anything from "[Laughter]" to "[Music]" to even "[Applause]".

You can buy a tripod adapter for the go pro which screws onto the case it came with for like $1 on eBay :) Congrats on the car though!!

That's a beautiful 300, Tyler. I've been rooting for this project. What happened to the Fury? I need some Fury parts ;).
The power steering problem is very common.

my neighbor has the same car and I'm trying to get it for my first car, so far the only thing that needs to be worked on is the fuel tank. Is there anything i should know about before I buy it?

I have a Dodge D300 with the same 383. It too has factory air. I an getting it back on the road and wondering did you rebuild the AC compressor (airtemp) and where did you get the rebuild kit?

I put dealing with the ac for a later project. I'll definitely do a video series on it.

I also have a 66 Chrysler 300 been in the family since purchased, noticed the new master cylinder and booster, can you direct me to a source, also did you do any major work on the brakes?
Good to see the car up on all 4s.

    • @TylersNeighborhoodGarage
      @TylersNeighborhoodGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you. The booster was from a '68 Fury parts car. I also had to use the front lines and distribution block from that car also. I bought a remanufactured master cylinder as applicable to the '68 Fury with drum brakes. I rebuilt the brakes on the 300 with no modifications.
