The parting scene between Custer (Erroll Flynn) and his wife (Olivia de Havilland) in "They Died With Their Boots On" is one of the most moving and beautiful in the history of American cinema. Erroll was the most handsome actor I remember and was perfectly suited for all those dashing heroes he portrayed. Thank you for this wonderful video Rob!
Errol will always be Robin Hood and him throwing the buck will never be topped. Heartwarming to see both your guests and a hearty hey partner to Bruce from an old cowboy.
Oh! Brilliant! I always loved watching Errol Flynn's movies! Particularly Captain Blood and Robin Hood! And read his book decades ago! Also, an autobiography by an illegitmate daughter of his in the Caribbean. A loyal fan, as you can see and I very much hope that there WILL be a follow-up interview with daughter Rory! Beautiful location you picked too!
What a tremendous interview in a spectacular location. Way to power through near catastrophe, Rob. And Bruce gave a great closing summary by referring to Rory as a "living bridge" to the golden age of cinema. Thank you all.
I am Canada's biggest Errol Flynn fan. I told Rory this and she was so kind to sign her book and a photo of her and her Dad together and sent them to me. I have an apartment full of Flynn memorabilia, photos, movie posters, autographs, books etc etc. Thanks again Rory. Thanks for this video Rob. "in like Flynn".
Coming from a broken home and with little guidance, I was darned near raised on Errol Flynn movies, I became a saltwater captain, a fencer, and coach and joined the Air Force fully expecting to be a dashing fighter pilot, after all Id watched plenty of Flynn movies and I was halfway trained already. Instead was a mechanic and did put many fighting aircraft in the air for real life heroes. I'd say that Errol Flynn was a helluva fine roll model.
What a fantastic place for the interview. I thoroughly enjoyed Rory's and Bruce's thoughts on Errol Flynn. I enjoyed Errol Flynn's movies so much, even the lesser known Roots of Heaven. Thanks ever so much.🎥❤
Love Errol Flynn! I rounded out my collection of his key swashbucklers, (Captain Blood, Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk), with a copy of Adventures of Don Juan that I got for Christmas. Thanks for the wonderful interview, Rob!
Wow, what an awesome interview. This was so interesting. I could have listened to Rory's stories for many more hours. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
Another good one Rob . As your interview indicates Flynn was not your ordinary overnight success he had actually lived many lives before becoming a Movie Star
Adventures often don't feel like adventures unless they're vicarious, or if real until after the fact. Very often they just fall into the category of a tough life. But tough as things got for Flynn in his youth it was much tougher to be a sheep in those days, apparently. Anyway, the irony here is we've all had all manner of adventures thanks to Rory's dad's work, without any of the pain or suffering. Just the thrills, and for that we are indebted and all should be grateful. To you too, Rob, and to Rory, Bruce and the Alabama Hills as well for these great stories and remembrances.
I'm going to start reading like a recursive loop but dang Rob, these interviews and insights are so epic to anyone who loved(s) Westerns and the stars that made them great. This one, like all of your others reveals stories and history that you just won't get elsewhere. For anyone else, go back and watch the older videos, so many legends that are gone now, leave a legacy for us to enjoy and keep. Got a lot more to go yet but at this point I know they'll all be as satisfying. Thank you @A Word on Westerns !
Thanks, Kyle. We do our best to preserve these stories. You'll enjoy the older episodes on repeat viewings as I always try to make them about the films, which are timeless. Happy new year!
This is wonderful! Thank you, Rory and Bruce! Thank you, AWOW!! Thank you, Rob!!! BTW, the gender-neutral name, Rory. refers to Irish nobility, the color of royalty, red, signifying power and leadership. Francis Timothy McCown, gave himself the name, Rory Calhoun; another Rory is RFK's youngest born shortly after his death.
I adored Errol Flynn ( even thought he was a bad boy) and I have followed Bruce’s career for years but I don’t think I have ever seen him off camera so this was a real treat. Will definitely get Rory’s book. Enjoyed this very much. Thank you!❤
This is so good. Mr. Boxleitner. Love your work. Those days of rt66, driveing a huge car through the desert at night with the top down. Every day was an adventure.
Great interview, Rob. "Box" reminds me so much of my dad, who could ride and, in another dimension, would have been John Wayne. Oklahoma's "Slim" Lynes was my hero!
Many thanks, Rob, RJ and Team AWOW, for another interesting program. Rory was delightful. BTW I grew up on Flynn's films, which by the 1960s were regular features on various TV programs, such as The Million Dollar Movie and The Late Show. Flynn absolutely commanded his films through his indomitable presence. Though Basil Rathbone and Tyrone Power were technically better fencers, still no one could wield a sword with such glee as Errol. And I loved him in Kim too. Many thanks again, and the best of health to you all. Happy New Year! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I loved Errol Flynn movies my first introduction to Errol Flynn was The Adventures of Robin Hood as a young kid. I watched as many of his movies as I can since then and own quite a few and still building my collection.
I'm so glad you were able to bring Rory to this interview I've always been a great fan and admirer of her dad. It would be so great to get to meet her or talk with her.
Thank you so much rob word for this interwiew with rory flynn daughter of Errol flynn, in my opinion the greatest actor of all time, holy mullholland house, what a gourgeus lady ,bruce is so great, he is a real cool actor,,i have the soundtrack from robin hood and sea hawk and when I hear them i just go in to medetating, your dad rory should have 30 oscars for his films ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤, thanks lord rob word of word on western and laird of the word manor from tom your western fan now and always say to rory you are realy your father daughter, Errol is you so much, 😊😊😊😊😊,may the sun always shine on you rory 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤
I purchased Rory’s book ( the Baron of Mulholland) shed some tears at the dear memories she shared about her dad, let us read the lovely letters he wrote to her Mom ( and so glad her mother saved these things for her children) - I also lost my father in 1959. That longing never goes away.
Rory has also been an advocate of the missing- she lost her brother Sean ( he was a photographer in VietNam during the war) and looked for him for many years.
This was GREAT! I always LOVE seeing Bruce, but getting a chance to pretend to be there - if only by video - of Rory talking about her dad, who I was a big fan of - was terrific. Thank you so much Mr. Word!! ❤❤
One thing that I always wondered was Flynn playing his idol, Jack Barrymore, in "Too Much Too Soon". That had to be hard to reflect on when they were both seen coming to the end of their lives.
For those who don't know... Tasmania was (and still is) one of the six states in Australia when Errol Flynn was a child/teen. For some reason Hollywood back then thought Tasmania was some sort of exotic place...even Merle Oberon used the place as part of her manufactured bio.
I think I met Rory when she came to Australia. The State Cinema in Hobart (Flynn's birthplace) unveiled a star outside the cinema and ran a week of Flynn's films on the big screen. A memorable week!
Great talk! I only recently read about the apparently vicious fistfight Errol Flynn got into with John Huston over Olivia de Haviland during a party at David O. Selznick's home back in 1945. Interesting times to say the least.
WOW YOU Turned Lone Pine into India That’s Really COOL 😎 Amazing how Hollywood do so much!Congratulations Rory on your First visit to Lone Pine and ESPECIALLY TO YOUR DAD ERROL FLYNN and ROCK For Your DAD!
I've been a Flynn admirer for about fifty years since I discovered his adventure movies at an old movie theater in Saratoga, CA. My favorites were The Sea Hawk and They Died With Their Boots On. And Rory, you're still beautiful and your reminiscences are wonderful. Please, Rob. Do get Rory and Bruce back again!
Guess I'm going to buy another Book ! Born and raised in southern California but of course traveled by courtesy of Uncle Sam APO into the not so friendly locations at the time, my Service time helped prepare me for the future. Afterwards I became a real prospector haunting the American West but always, always was a big fan of the Cinema and the golden days of Hollywood. Great Interview !
Known for his swashbucklers, Flynn made some pretty good Westerns, too. My one two favorites being "Dodge City" and "Virginia City" (having seen 'em on TV first as a kid, it was years before I discovered that Dodge City was actually filmed in color!), and then "Rocky Mountain", Flynn's last one (I think) filmed ten years later, co-written by Alan Le May author of "The Searchers" which has a great story and is an excellent one too. I don't count "They Died With Their Boots On", which for me, falls into a sub category of Civil War slash cavalry picture "based on real characters and actual events" which, in moon pitcher parlance means almost entirely pure fiction. Which I liked very much as well. Great show with Rory and Bruce in the best possible Western location outside Monument Valley.
I agree - the actors of today do not have the skills or talent of those of the past. They need all these graphic helps while in the past it was talent, music and action that made the movies.
ERROL FLYNN at LONE PINE... well, the Charge of the Light Brigade certainly took advantage of the desert scenery there, but it was intercut with footage shot at IVERSONS Movie Ranch back in HOLLYWOOD's own back yard. In fact, a lot of Flynn action was shot at the world's most famous ranch for his THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON... but when it came to the wide open spaces and rolling hills they shot again within HOLLYWOOD's own backyard out at Lasky Mesa near Agoura, Ca. The battle of the Little Big Horn scene was shot there, and also two big action scenes for Charge of the Ligh Brigade, the attack on the fort and the actual "charge" of the Light Brigade finale. RORY FLYNN is a delight, but I wish we could have seen her without the shades... her father always said he didn't want to die of old age, and sadly his good looks started their decline in the early 1950's. He was a great icon for sure, and it's certainly a shame he didn't get to see much of Rory growing up. His son Sean from his first marriage must have been an inspiration for Rory having been a freelance still photographer who disappeared whilst on assignment in Cambodia in 1970, covering the Vietnam war. Another good on-location interview, you can't beat that great natural light up at LONE PINE can you Rob! RORY FLYNN, it really is a HOLLYWOOD kind of name...
Yeah, great Irish name. Also real in her case. Unlike Rory Calhoun whose real name was Francis McGown which is Irish too, but nowhere near as cool. Nice post.
Rory joins me on stage for a talk about ROCKY MOUNTAIN, Graham, so you'll see her sparkling eyes. Hey! It was really, really bright out there. When our giant umbrella blew over, I'm sure she was glad to have on the shades. Happy New Year
Excelente entrevista Rob, te felicito. Una de las películas de Flynn que más me gusta es Rocky Mountain, pienso que sería interesante que vayas con Rory a las locaciones de dicha película y nos hablaras de ella. Te deseo un Feliz Año 🎆
