In John, where the English translation usually says "the Jews", it should actually be translated "the Judeans". He was not referring to all Jews, but certain ones in positions of power with regard to the temple at that time (in contrast to the 'Essenes'/Kumran community).

My question about the Rich man and Lazarus was that after Abraham says the rich man was there for being rich, why didn't said Rich man reply, "Then what are you doing over in paradise? You were rich too....and so what about you being a Patriarch, I am sure you didn't help all the destitute either" --"you should be over burning with me". What I really wonder is if she has done discussions in response to proven Biological Science that free will does not exists....I bet it would be great.

I thought this was a really good interview. I’m especially taken by Dr Levine’s theological approach to ideas like hell, grace, and the Holy Spirit. For her it’s logically inconsistent to say that God is all loving and that he could, at the same time, cast people into hell to be punished for eternity. Randy Robinson wanted to lean in the direction of free will, that it’s not God’s fault that people are in hell, rather, it was their choice for not accepting Jesus as their savior. But Dr Levine correctly countered that given her Jewish background, which she is totally satisfied with, that this could not be a real choice for her, rather, that the threat of hell could only be coercive. Secondly, she mentioned that eternal punishment would never be corrective, as a parent should correct a child, and that eternal punishment could never fit the crime or the sin.

One of the earliest Christian theologian and scholar, Origen of Alexandria, lived from 185 to 253 CE. He believed that everyone would eventually end up in Heaven. He believed that before the creation of the universe all the souls of intelligent beings were created. He believed in reincarnation, and that people who were bad and did bad and evil things would be sent back into physical bodies until they got things right and lived a good life that would get them into Heaven. Even though he was described as “the greatest genius the early church ever produced”, his teachings were declared heretical in 543 by the Emperor Justinian 1.
There were many different ideas about the nature of God and Jesus circulating in early Christianity. It wasn’t until the late fourth century when the 27 books of the New Testament were mentioned together as the books to be used. They were listed in Easter letters that were sent out by Athanasius of Alexandria to churches he was in charge of in Egypt in the year 367. There were still other books and Gospels used throughout different churches in the Roman Empire. It was many centuries before the Church made the 27 books canon.

A Parable. There was a man claiming to have come down from heaven, astonishing all who heard him, FOR HE SPOKE LIKE NOBODY ELSE. Even so those who believed him were few. Just before he returned, he said sadly," Had I spoken to them as a human speaks, those who rejected me, would bear no blame. But as it is, I spoke neither like a human, nor even like an angel."

Dr. Levine makes a really good point that Jesus does not come across as an abolitionist. Paul in certain places sounds no better than what we have Jesus saying in the Gospels. Nevertheless, it is Paul who has the most radical anti-slavery message in Philemon by considering the runaway slave Onesimus as a brother and a son, familial messages that undercut the slavery system, for a good Jew would not forcibly enslave their brother or son. This really strikes at the heart of the argument that tends to elevate the "Red Letters" spoken by Jesus over and against Paul.

A big difference I see in Christianity and Judaism is the understanding of the Messiah. Ezekiel, the end of Ezekiel will give you the view for the Messiah and if you believe Revelation and the other gospels, you’re going to see, they are very contradictory so either the writers New Testament gospel are wrong or Ezekiel is wrong. They both can’t be right. Specially as a Messiah gives offerings in Ezekiel. There’s more to it, but this is just a little bit.

So is not this idea that we ( christian understand it all right in how we see salvation through Jesus) that we make it and Idol in that we condemn others to hell at least in our minds because someone can't get their in their hearts for all the reasons they have.. how and where they were raised.. or evils from say a believer that were done to them .. Christianity I think struggles with humility.. and I am a Christian..

This interview is a blessing! Amy is a blessing. I need an answer because of limited information. This question is primarily for Amy. What do you think about what type of precious stones may have been used on Aaron's Breastplate and what do you think about Ibn Ezra's analysis? I also have been unable to find Ibn Ezra's analysis of all of the stones. The hard part is that I can't read Hebrew. Can you assist me with this?

I am in a Bible study group that is using The Difficult Words of Jesus, one chapter for each week. The idea of wrestling with the words and meaning is so empowering. Also, understanding the underlying meaning of the words adds depth to my understanding of what Jesus was saying.

It is greek-roman literature and the authors used tropes and story elements frlm Homer. Euripides, Vergil and grerk philosophy. We have greek educated authors adressing a greek audience in greek. So without speaking greek understandkng grerk culture and knowing the texts of greek literature one has a tiny obstacle. These texts were never meant to be translated, or read 1800 years later 12000 miles away. When Homer is for most Americans a yellow cartoon character they may have a problem to understand the greek authors of the Iesous stories.

    THE COMMANDMENTS:
    (Mt.19:16-30,Mk.10:17-31,Lk.18:18-30,Mt.22:34-40,Mk.12:28-34,Lk.10:25-28,Jn.15:12-14)
A man came to Jesus and asked, "Good Teacher, what must I do TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE?" Jesus said: Why do you call me good? Only G-D alone is good. TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE, YOU MUST FOLLOW THE COMMANDMENTS: Hear Israel, the Lord our G-D is ONE. YOU SHALL love the Lord your G-D with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and with all your strength. You SHALL love your neighbor as yourself. You SHALL NOT Kill, Commit Adultery, Steal, make False Statements, or Defraud others. Honor your father and mother. Give money to care for the poor, and follow me.
Jesus said: This is my Command: As I have loved you, you are love one another. There is no greater love than to give your life for your friends. You are my friends if you do as I command you.

I don't have issues with Jesus's rebukes as there worse ones or equal or more frequent ones from God against Israel in the OT. They broke His covenant. Hence the New covenant introduced by Jesus in His blood.
    However this one I ponder.
The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

Well as Pilate was speaking letin he never said that and as Iesous spoke Arameic they had no common language to talk to each other. But as the roman seat of power in the region was in Ceasarea they never meet anyway, nor would a roman highest representateive bother that another rebellious jew pretenting to be a king or messiah is executed. The greek-roman literature about Iesous is in so many ways just fantasy.

Lovely woman, captures the heart of God and the importance of loving our neighbour.
But for her then she must see Yeshua’s death as being in vain, that is if he’s just another good teacher….
And His resurrection…witnessed by many….must to her be a falsehood signifying nothing if He was just one more Rabbi among many, and, if He is not risen, then sin and death are NOT defeated and Jews must still need to sacrifice for sin and gentiles are lost souls. Jews must still need a high priest to perform the sacrificial role.
But to those who believe….Yeshua…Lamb of God, Lion of Judah….priest, prophet, king.
    As scripture tell us;
    1 Corinthians: 15-19
“If we, who are [abiding] in Christ have hope only in THIS life [and this is all there is], then we are (of all people) most miserable and to be pitied.”

    THE FINAL JUDGMENT: ...........(Mt.16:27-28,Mk.8:38-9:1,Lk.9:26-27,Mt.25:31-46)
Jesus said: The Son of Man will come in his Father’s glory with the Holy angels. He will render unto everyone ACCORDING TO THEIR DEEDS. When the Son of Man comes in glory with all his angels, he will sit on a Royal Throne. The people of all nations will be brought before him. He will separate them, like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then he will say to those on his right: My Father has Blessed you. Come and receive the Kingdom that was prepared before the world was created. For when I was hungry, and you brought me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me a cup to drink. I was a stranger, and you provided clothing and shelter. I was sick, and you came to care for me. I was in prison, and you came to visit me. Then those Blessed by God will ask: Lord, when did we do these things for you? Jesus said: Whatever you did for the least among you, you did for me. Then the Lord will say to those on his left: Depart from me. You have been cursed by God. You will be sent to the place of fire that was prepared for Satan and his minions. For when I had hunger and thirst, you turned away from me. When I was a stranger, you did not welcome me. When I was sick and in prison, you did not come to me. Then those cursed by God will ask: Lord, when did we see you like this? Jesus said: Whatever you failed to do for the least among you, you failed to do for me. Those Blessed by God WILL HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. But those cursed by God will be punished forever.

She is a remarkable Christian in heart, I wish for her to be contaminated by false Christian teaching of fanatic sectarian Christian’s, who believe there is Hell for the people who hurt themselves by living in sin, as the punishment of their sin is not from God ( can any body carry fire in his lab, and does not get burned:. Indeed sin is like a poisonous asp. It is so stupid to believe in something called the wrath of God on his miserable human beings after a law was set that who ever sinneth surely he dies, perishes, ( does not get eternal life) . Is this difficult to understand!?. The Bible teaches both in the OT and the new that whosoever does righteousness is accepted to him as in the story of Cornelius in Acts 10:36 which was a surprise to Peter himself.. this is a reverberation of the OT “ Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
You may ask why Christ died? To take care of the sin brought first in the world by the devil in the form of the serpent symbolically, and perpetrated by Adam. He condemned that sin in the flesh , and died to defeat the one who had the power of death that is Satan. He did this unto God, when he said “ for you I have bore the reproach in Psalm 69. Please read the scripture by dividing the truth as Professor has her understanding from the same scripture. Though we may not understand each other we respect each other and love one another, and do not degrade God or Jesus, to make him God father and Son) like our feeble minds. I love Professor Levine.
