  • Dr. Amy-Jill "AJ" Levine presents this FutureChurch "Women Erased" session to clear up the popular, but false and toxic, perception that Jesus was a first-century feminist working to liberate Jewish women from an oppressive Judaism that made the Taliban look progressive. Professor Levine digs into the sources and what they reveal about women in Second Temple Judaism, reconstructing the lives of these women, and offering good news for women today.
Amy Jill Levine is Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University of Religion and Peace and University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies Emerita, Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies Emerita, and Professor of New Testament Studies Emerita at Vanderbilt.

So grateful for your presentation, Emily, as a Dominican Sister of Peace and remember that we have not died yet as our Prioress shared with us and we will continue to support women in the Church. Blessings, Sr. Brigid

Which church or religious assembly have you be attending Amy that gives you the impression that women were deliberately ignored! Women are seen and given their rightful place everywhere in the Holy Scripture 😃💕

Really? That thing about women deferring to their husbands in the Epistles don't reflect well on Paul, nor does the history of the suppression of women's leadership as the church came into its own as the official Roman religion. Have you studied church history at all?

Hemorrhaging is not the same as monthly periods Amy! She was cured of heavy bleeding that impedes one’s daily activities and eventually cause Anemia if it goes on every month

I'm sure that Dr. Levine is well aware of the difference between hemorrhagning and menstrual periods. She reads the ancient languages and is well aware of how those terms may have varied or differed from how we use them today. Have some respect for the depth and breadth of knowledge of this honored woman scholar.

This video is so unnecessary! Throughout my life as a Catholic and the lives of my ancestors did we ever think for once that the Bible didn’t look at woman as equal!

You’re speaking for all of your ancestors now?
And attempting to silence scholarship on the basis that you have deemed it unnecessary?
What’s is your real objection to another person presenting their research?

Hi It isn't unnecessary. Some Evangelical churches are horrendous in the way they treat women. I came across one recently where women are not allowed to read the scriptures in public and not allowed to be pastors or preach. They have totally ignored the way jesus treated women and the fact that Paul appointed women leaders. They have made a huge doctrine out of the scripture in Timothy where women had to be quiet and learn. They ignored the explanations about pronouns and the fact that anyone who taught had to learn etc etc. Misogynism in these sort of churches is rising unfortunately. very upsetting.

Its so necessary. Conservatice Evangelical Christianity can be very discriminatory against women. Defeer to husband, don't preach to a church full of men, absolute submission to headship of husband, etc etc many harmful teachings sanctioned in the name if God.

Necessary. Because Catholic church like some other denominations doesn't allow women clergy. Equal value different roles is word salad. If equal value they should have equal opportunity as men to serve their God-given gifts. God does not discriminate. Peace.
