One correction to the subtitles: every time they mention metres it is about feet really. As far as I know the original did not specify units of measurement in many cases so they implanted metres erroneously. Anyways, battle 10000 metres above without oxygen tanks is impossible.

First of all this is an isekai, so it's not our WWI or a universe with Harry Potter. But mostly the mages should be seen as planes. This anime explores a 'what if WWI never ended' scenario. 12:11 'She's like half the size of the rest' Tanya is 9 years old. Viktoriya is 16. So both are children and Tanya is also from an orphanage to small for her age. 14:56 'What the f*ck is this child?' Tanya should be sort of seen as the Red Baron one of the best plane pilots on Germany's side during WWI.
Military and firearms related anime are just fun to watch imo, truly a shame there aren't more of it instead we see the same copy and paste fantasy isekai and are forced to consume it like junk food
the author did a really good job implementing the mages into the militaries of the first half of the 20th century by not simply making them completely overpowered but instead looking for reasonable uses for them and I really like the mix historical military operation with some nice plottwists well, and I always enjoy seeing her being a "totally" rational being and everyone around her thinking she is a complete madman and evil incarnate at the very least

Actually the story is more about a mix of WW1 and WW2. There are countless references to both wars, and it also plays in the 1924, right between the two wars.
Tanya is no joke. She is the best example of lawful evil in just about all anime. A perfect soldier, always following orders (while looking for every loophole), an officer that gets the respect from her soldiers (and their fear), won't allow those under her command to die in combat (they believe she'll drag them back from Heaven saying they weren't dismissed), a tactical genius wise beyond her years, diligently working her way up the ranks. She has earned her title as an combat ace & takes on several dangerous missions (whether she wants them or not) because she is a highly competent & extremely effective soldier, all before the age of 12.

The great Aoi Yuki voices Tanya. How she manages to put so much derision and anger in her voice without sounding like she's trying is beyond me. She's stunning in real life and sings many an anime song
Carlo Zen, the author, basically envisioned mages as a magical representation of Panzergrenadiers from WWII, a mechanized light infantry concept the Germans came up with after their invasion of France which emphasized fast movement in armoured personnel carriers while also carrying all the tools necessary to destroy tanks in great numbers. They were quite effective and are still considered the prototype of mechanized infantry as we know it in the present day. The light novels of this show are really fun to read, they go a lot further into the thought process of the main character and she comes off as a MUCH crazier individual in those books. I especially like the contemplations on ethics and military law that the author brings up, it is quite interesting to gain insight into how the military rationalises the various forms of warfare that exists and how they write them into military law.
Tanya is literally unhinged sociopath but have so much logic behind her that we just need to acknowledge she's a competent psycho. Bro lit kill everyone with no shaking heart at all, other than lamenting the lost resources.
to be fair i think the books let her look much more rational and less psycho than in the anime but she never stopped to think like a member of the human resources department which lets her look like one.

Man it's been awhile since I seen Tanya. Her JP actress Aoi does a great job of her voice and showing how insane she is. The visuals for this show are fantastic and the movie didn't disappoint in that section
The character designs are meant to look unusual, they were deliberately going for a near “ugly” look for the characters to help maintain the whole dark and gritty nature of the work since they felt like having aesthetically appeasing character designs would go against its nature
When you're talking about "ugly" look, do you mean the design choices for dramatic faces of characters (like Tanya's eyes for example) or the overall art quality? 'Cause I'll be honest, this anime, while it has good voice actors and sound effects, does serious disservice to the series with the barely medium art quality. Especially Tanya, Viktoriya and some of the other character's anime designs suffered horribly. Victoriya looks like a derpy version of Orihime. I'm glad I watched this anime first and only after started reading the manga, because _hooolee shiiiit_ I felt like we were scammed with what we got. The light novel and manga art is absolutely beautiful and I now have trouble rewatching this, because of how subpar the art quality is compared to the original source and manga

Small correction: Whilest it is true that World War 1 was about mages, World War 2 was not actually about centaurs. WW2 was about vampires. There's an entire documentary series about it, called "Hellsing Ultimate".
Glad to see reaction on this show. Not sure where your getting these downloads at but I notice that the person who cuts parts off for copyright reasons cuts alot important stuff off, and it's obvious in this episodes from orders given to actions done that set up moments for situations along the way. Just wanted to say dont skip the endings after credits on these episodes there good.
In the Light novel, I understand that Tanya is now a Lt. Col and command a combined arms unit similar to a battalion size version of the US regimental combat team - with armour, artillery and her flying mage (helicopters) group and supported by group troops - however, she end up getting a fallschirmjäger (parachute) battalion instead just a standard line unit. The story is on going.
Your reaction to the opening for this is why I'm here. I've been waiting for you to watch this show. It's WWI / WWII inspired. WWI for the interaction of alliances bringing forth a heretofore unsee and unheard of World War... and WWII for level of technology with a splash of Magic. There's guns and planes and vehicles like tanks, cars and trains on par with WWII and then there are Mage's which in this setting are basically attack helicopters equipped with powerful missiles. Enjoy.
The disclaimer at the end isn't as ridiculous as you think. When this series premiered, it was panned by critics for it's celebration of nazis (which they aren't). So, the disclaimer wasn't only necessary, but wasn't even enough to work.
As a german, it is kind of interesting to watch this, because this _is_ basically WWI, just slightly off, lie a parallel Universe and it is interesting to see which parallells they kept
The story actually plays in a WW1.5 setting. There are references to both WW. For example they have rockets, and mages represent the mobile warfare of tanks. It also has historical events that happened in WW2 (like after France lost, they fled to Africa and still remained a threat, which kept the war ongoing.)
It's not a world war yet, or at the same time period as our ww1. Also the people in chat that were saying British need to actually watch the show. Those were French(that's worlds equivalent anyways) mages, they are the ones that ride the horse like things. The British mages ride brooms. Scandinavian mages use skis. American mages ride like a motorcycle without wheels thing
Love this show. Started watching it when i heard that MC has the same VA as Clemetine (Overlord Season 1, assassin that Ainz fights in the graveyeard )
This is one of my favorite shows. Just rewatched it for like the 8th time last week. The story, the characters, the world building are all spectacular. And as your chat pointed out, the SFX and score amp up the intensity to 11. Wait until you get a few more episodes in, and see that it gets even better. There's a movie that continues the story after the TV series, and a second series is due out sometime in the next 6-12 months I think.
you can basicly say that these mages are the equivalent to planes in ww1. about the two guys (if unclear): they rejected a direct command of their supperior and left the troop without permission, thats why tanya was allowed to punish them so she wanted to send them back to the home base, but they rejected again making the possible punishment bigger. tanya could have used the sword for instant punishment was stopped. thats why she send them to a pillbox at the rear. it seemed ok to them because they would stay close to the battle, won't have tanya as superior and don't get punished. but - exactly as planed - the pillbox gets destroyed making it a deathtrap for them.

That said, I like her anime face as it can express anything from cuteness to the most abject cruelty. But I think they overdid it with her aide. She should look a little more adult but her eyes basically kills it completely.
This Anime "Saga of Tanya the Evil" is Based in a World similar to ours but with some differences. Magic is a real thing and takes ability plus complex Calculations to perform, The Countries are the same, but their names are slightly Different as you see with the Imperial Capital being named Berun instead of Berlin.....
Ah saga of tanya the evil, this was the first proper anime I saw that had Aoi yuuki voicing the main character. First heard her in overlord and went onto this. Great anime if you want a morally questionable, evil protagonist
@@TyrantsRemedy Ha! Well what a coincidence, it's also my favourite role of hers! I've loved reading the LNs before the anime came out, and I have to say, she fits the role to perfection! If only there could be more seasons... Unfortunately, in my opinion they kind of butchered the human's side, but the story was still respected well, and the adaptation is overall good. But really, Aoi Yuuki carried the entire season for me, her performance is absolutely glorious! Really hope we can get a season 2, I reaaally love the LN, and her role is flawless when playing Kumoko

Honestly if they do ever make more seasons of it I would prefer if they focused more on the humans. Just by reading the first few LN's there is so much they missed
@@TyrantsRemedy Honestly, I've read a bunch of LNs but Spider's are definitely up there for me! And yeah, the human side... definitely needed some more touches. The first couple of introductions to the human side were incredibly rushed for instance like you said. And really, even in the light novel I sorta prefered the Kumoko side, but the human's wasn't all that bad either, I liked all of the interactions, and the world building is always fantastic! When the anime dropped I almost felt like I'd skipped a few episodes when the human side appeared... I mean it went by REALLY fast! Also since they rushed so much of it... well the big reveals and twists didn't hit nearly as much as the LN, but that's alright. The main thing is that the human lead (dang I forgot his name, the blue haired younger brother "protagonist") is just as foolish as he is in the LN, and I'm actually glad about that! It makes for a good contrast, and isn't too "in your face", the viewer can make their own opinions on whether the human's side is right... or just plain stupid. Oh! I should probably mention, I've actually read the WN before the LN came out, and read up until the very end almost (I'm pretty sure it never got finished). After that, I've also read all of the LN volumes up until this point. Maybe I'm missing the most recent one? I don't actually know if it came out yet. I have to say, there have been EXTRA MAJOR changes between the WN and the LN. Some of them were a bit unfortunate but otherwise, I also really like the direction the LN is going in. It's just a shame that we have less Kumoko action in the LN than in the WN, I loved to read some good ol' Kumoko trolling once in a while. I also read the manga up till a certain point, and I noticed that it followed the LN way more faithfully than the anime actually! I never continued reading it afterwards, not sure where it is now. Is it any good?

The best part of the anime is watching Tanya slowly go insane due to her own stubbornness to not admit the being that's been fucking with her since the start might actually fit the definition of a god. The mages in this wotld basically took the place of the airforce, at least most of it. There's not enough of them to be a full military on their own, other countries have them too, and they can in fact be taken out by normal guns if hit hard or often enough.
fun fact, the author of the original manga asked the anime studio togive Tania ang Serebryakov an unusual apearence. he wanted them to look "off" to breake the trope of lolis in war and also to hint Tanias personality as unusual

in the novel tanya and viktoriya looked cute. the style of the anime was the author's request to make them look ugly/weird so that the audience will focus on the story and not lewd the characters especially since they're children. TBF the author did not realize the artstyle did not, in fact, deter any of the weirdos from making r34 art of them anyway.
For the realism part, there are a number of laws that restrict realistic approaches in such productions. For example, the Japanese Criminal Code prohibits glorifying war crimes, and the Peace Preservation Law prohibits disseminating material that could incite hatred or violence against other countries. As a result, anime producers are generally cautious about depicting World War(s) in a realistic manner, as they do not want to run the risk of violating these laws. Thus comes your "mages" fantasy elements or some sci-fi parts deluding the realism part.
This anime fails explaining some things that makes look tanya as the great evil but. Everything is a great misunderstood and lack of communication, the light novel and manga makes it more evident. One of my favorite anime BTW
If you read the book series "Temeraire" by Naomi Novik you would also learn about how much dragons played a part in Napoleon era wars lol It seems the british held out by the skin of their teeth against Napoleon's superior numbers. In regard to this series it's an interesting watch. pretty much all the context was put in episode 2 rather then the first in an effort to hook the viewer in.
That anime, God is just as evil as Tanya is... he f***ing weaponized prayer as a way to get Tanya to believe in him, and she still refuses even after that.
Wah I cant wait to watch all of this again Im a huge fan of the show Tanya is the freakin best just a few insights from the book she is so small because of stunted growth due to malnutrition and magical doping, also shes not so much a villian shes just amoral but strictly follows the laws and rules enforcing them extremely strictly she was legally within her right to execute her subordinates for their disobedience she just took a round about way of doing it to save face after the fact, and finally despite her actions shes actually against the idea of fighting when she gave her little speech to the enemies asking them why they were invading that was her attempt at negotiating but she cant outright seek peace openly because it would be seen as treason and shed be sent to the firing squad
OH YEAH! I love this anime, also, i really like how the episode is a little from the perspective of Victoriya, being a little afraid of Tanya because she is shy and Tany very rude, then admiring her because of her power and believing that she is softer than she looks because she just move the rebel soldiers to rears instead of send them home or punish them physically, and even being grateful that Tanya was worried about Victoriya's safeness in the military plan that was discussed in the meeting, smiling at how Tanya seems to be rude and strict on the outside but a good person in the inside... then we discovered that the rebel soldiers died in the rear, and that Tanya knowing that could happen send then there on purpose, now Victoriya (and us) knows why Tanya is considered a devil in the form of a child. P.S. I feel a little weird that this reaction is in another room and with a chat, but its ok, i just want to say it xD
YS is really great in terms of the different adaptations and media where anyone can consume the story for different aspects if it. Anime was great for the dogfights and animation and maximizing the twistedness of Tanya. Manga for a better appreciation of the Misunderstanding field and general comedic aspects of the story. The LN is not too good of a story in terms of how info dumpy it is at times. but the various fan fics do a great job of expanding and characterizing the characters depending on the focus of the fic and if it was meant to be a cross over or expansion of the canon story as in the great sequel fanfics like in the case of Political Records and Delinquency record and the Cold war.
I'd just like to point out a major difference between the Anime and the Novels. In the anime, they sometimes confuse how the mages are used, having them use ''artillery spells'' at times and other times being supported by actual artillery. In the novel, the mages, while they could be far more destructive than a normal soldier, were still mostly only used as forward artillery spotters that would direct the OBSCENE amounts of artillery behind friendly lines to pinpoint accuracy if left alone. Of course, due to events in the story in both the anime and the novels, we see less of this method of use due to the nature of the unit our point of view is tied to.
The trick with this anime is that it is actually a REVERSE Bible Story (Old Testament) ....Basically God trying to force a human to have faith but we are rooting for the human

Especially Tanya, Viktoriya and some of the other character's anime designs suffered horribly. Victoriya looks like a derpy version of Orihime.
I'm glad I watched this anime first and only after started reading the manga, because _hooolee shiiiit_ I felt like we were scammed with what we got. The light novel and manga art is absolutely beautiful and I now have trouble rewatching this, because of how subpar the art quality is compared to the original source and manga

Small correction: Whilest it is true that World War 1 was about mages, World War 2 was not actually about centaurs. WW2 was about vampires. There's an entire documentary series about it, called "Hellsing Ultimate".
Glad to see reaction on this show. Not sure where your getting these downloads at but I notice that the person who cuts parts off for copyright reasons cuts alot important stuff off, and it's obvious in this episodes from orders given to actions done that set up moments for situations along the way. Just wanted to say dont skip the endings after credits on these episodes there good.

Glad you started this series. Definitely one of my all-time favorites with an interesting story and great action pieces.
In the Light novel, I understand that Tanya is now a Lt. Col and command a combined arms unit similar to a battalion size version of the US regimental combat team - with armour, artillery and her flying mage (helicopters) group and supported by group troops - however, she end up getting a fallschirmjäger (parachute) battalion instead just a standard line unit.
The story is on going.

It's WWI / WWII inspired. WWI for the interaction of alliances bringing forth a heretofore unsee and unheard of World War... and WWII for level of technology with a splash of Magic. There's guns and planes and vehicles like tanks, cars and trains on par with WWII and then there are Mage's which in this setting are basically attack helicopters equipped with powerful missiles.

The disclaimer at the end isn't as ridiculous as you think. When this series premiered, it was panned by critics for it's celebration of nazis (which they aren't). So, the disclaimer wasn't only necessary, but wasn't even enough to work.

As a german, it is kind of interesting to watch this, because this _is_ basically WWI, just slightly off, lie a parallel Universe and it is interesting to see which parallells they kept

The story actually plays in a WW1.5 setting.
There are references to both WW. For example they have rockets, and mages represent the mobile warfare of tanks. It also has historical events that happened in WW2 (like after France lost, they fled to Africa and still remained a threat, which kept the war ongoing.)
Yea because in EP 10 they show they have Panzerwagen IIIs and those are from WW2 so I was like "what the h*** are people talking about WW1"?

It's not a world war yet, or at the same time period as our ww1. Also the people in chat that were saying British need to actually watch the show. Those were French(that's worlds equivalent anyways) mages, they are the ones that ride the horse like things. The British mages ride brooms. Scandinavian mages use skis. American mages ride like a motorcycle without wheels thing

This is one of my favorite shows. Just rewatched it for like the 8th time last week. The story, the characters, the world building are all spectacular. And as your chat pointed out, the SFX and score amp up the intensity to 11. Wait until you get a few more episodes in, and see that it gets even better. There's a movie that continues the story after the TV series, and a second series is due out sometime in the next 6-12 months I think.

about the two guys (if unclear):
they rejected a direct command of their supperior and left the troop without permission, thats why tanya was allowed to punish them
so she wanted to send them back to the home base, but they rejected again making the possible punishment bigger. tanya could have used the sword for instant punishment was stopped. thats why she send them to a pillbox at the rear. it seemed ok to them because they would stay close to the battle, won't have tanya as superior and don't get punished. but - exactly as planed - the pillbox gets destroyed making it a deathtrap for them.
The battle music for this anime is soooooo good!

That said, I like her anime face as it can express anything from cuteness to the most abject cruelty.

Magic is a real thing and takes ability plus complex Calculations to perform, The Countries are the same, but their names are slightly Different as you see with the Imperial Capital being named Berun instead of Berlin.....

Ah saga of tanya the evil, this was the first proper anime I saw that had Aoi yuuki voicing the main character. First heard her in overlord and went onto this. Great anime if you want a morally questionable, evil protagonist

If only there could be more seasons... Unfortunately, in my opinion they kind of butchered the human's side, but the story was still respected well, and the adaptation is overall good.
But really, Aoi Yuuki carried the entire season for me, her performance is absolutely glorious! Really hope we can get a season 2, I reaaally love the LN, and her role is flawless when playing Kumoko
@@garagara4849 i bought the first four LN's straight after watching the anime. First ever LN's i've ever bought and it's also been the first ever manga I've read. Honestly if they do ever make more seasons of it I would prefer if they focused more on the humans. Just by reading the first few LN's there is so much they missed

And yeah, the human side... definitely needed some more touches. The first couple of introductions to the human side were incredibly rushed for instance like you said.
And really, even in the light novel I sorta prefered the Kumoko side, but the human's wasn't all that bad either, I liked all of the interactions, and the world building is always fantastic!
When the anime dropped I almost felt like I'd skipped a few episodes when the human side appeared... I mean it went by REALLY fast! Also since they rushed so much of it... well the big reveals and twists didn't hit nearly as much as the LN, but that's alright.
The main thing is that the human lead (dang I forgot his name, the blue haired younger brother "protagonist") is just as foolish as he is in the LN, and I'm actually glad about that!
It makes for a good contrast, and isn't too "in your face", the viewer can make their own opinions on whether the human's side is right... or just plain stupid.
Oh! I should probably mention, I've actually read the WN before the LN came out, and read up until the very end almost (I'm pretty sure it never got finished).
After that, I've also read all of the LN volumes up until this point. Maybe I'm missing the most recent one? I don't actually know if it came out yet.
I have to say, there have been EXTRA MAJOR changes between the WN and the LN. Some of them were a bit unfortunate but otherwise, I also really like the direction the LN is going in. It's just a shame that we have less Kumoko action in the LN than in the WN, I loved to read some good ol' Kumoko trolling once in a while.
I also read the manga up till a certain point, and I noticed that it followed the LN way more faithfully than the anime actually!
I never continued reading it afterwards, not sure where it is now. Is it any good?

The best part of the anime is watching Tanya slowly go insane due to her own stubbornness to not admit the being that's been fucking with her since the start might actually fit the definition of a god.
The mages in this wotld basically took the place of the airforce, at least most of it. There's not enough of them to be a full military on their own, other countries have them too, and they can in fact be taken out by normal guns if hit hard or often enough.
don’t forget there is an OVA and a movie that are also phenomenal

in the novel tanya and viktoriya looked cute. the style of the anime was the author's request to make them look ugly/weird so that the audience will focus on the story and not lewd the characters especially since they're children.
TBF the author did not realize the artstyle did not, in fact, deter any of the weirdos from making r34 art of them anyway.
For the realism part, there are a number of laws that restrict realistic approaches in such productions. For example, the Japanese Criminal Code prohibits glorifying war crimes, and the Peace Preservation Law prohibits disseminating material that could incite hatred or violence against other countries. As a result, anime producers are generally cautious about depicting World War(s) in a realistic manner, as they do not want to run the risk of violating these laws. Thus comes your "mages" fantasy elements or some sci-fi parts deluding the realism part.

This anime fails explaining some things that makes look tanya as the great evil but. Everything is a great misunderstood and lack of communication, the light novel and manga makes it more evident. One of my favorite anime BTW

If you read the book series "Temeraire" by Naomi Novik you would also learn about how much dragons played a part in Napoleon era wars lol

In regard to this series it's an interesting watch. pretty much all the context was put in episode 2 rather then the first in an effort to hook the viewer in.

Wah I cant wait to watch all of this again Im a huge fan of the show Tanya is the freakin best just a few insights from the book she is so small because of stunted growth due to malnutrition and magical doping, also shes not so much a villian shes just amoral but strictly follows the laws and rules enforcing them extremely strictly she was legally within her right to execute her subordinates for their disobedience she just took a round about way of doing it to save face after the fact, and finally despite her actions shes actually against the idea of fighting when she gave her little speech to the enemies asking them why they were invading that was her attempt at negotiating but she cant outright seek peace openly because it would be seen as treason and shed be sent to the firing squad
just like death note, you gotta watch episode 2 to see the whole premise. what you saw was just the intro.

OH YEAH! I love this anime, also, i really like how the episode is a little from the perspective of Victoriya, being a little afraid of Tanya because she is shy and Tany very rude, then admiring her because of her power and believing that she is softer than she looks because she just move the rebel soldiers to rears instead of send them home or punish them physically, and even being grateful that Tanya was worried about Victoriya's safeness in the military plan that was discussed in the meeting, smiling at how Tanya seems to be rude and strict on the outside but a good person in the inside... then we discovered that the rebel soldiers died in the rear, and that Tanya knowing that could happen send then there on purpose, now Victoriya (and us) knows why Tanya is considered a devil in the form of a child.
P.S. I feel a little weird that this reaction is in another room and with a chat, but its ok, i just want to say it xD
YS is really great in terms of the different adaptations and media where anyone can consume the story for different aspects if it. Anime was great for the dogfights and animation and maximizing the twistedness of Tanya. Manga for a better appreciation of the Misunderstanding field and general comedic aspects of the story. The LN is not too good of a story in terms of how info dumpy it is at times. but the various fan fics do a great job of expanding and characterizing the characters depending on the focus of the fic and if it was meant to be a cross over or expansion of the canon story as in the great sequel fanfics like in the case of Political Records and Delinquency record and the Cold war.

I'd just like to point out a major difference between the Anime and the Novels.
In the anime, they sometimes confuse how the mages are used, having them use ''artillery spells'' at times and other times being supported by actual artillery.
In the novel, the mages, while they could be far more destructive than a normal soldier, were still mostly only used as forward artillery spotters that would direct the OBSCENE amounts of artillery behind friendly lines to pinpoint accuracy if left alone.
Of course, due to events in the story in both the anime and the novels, we see less of this method of use due to the nature of the unit our point of view is tied to.
