Hi Karen, As a bit of a prepper myself, I have always kept away from buying any expensive water filter system. I see all these videos on here, and survival / Bushcraft people using all sorts of gadgets to make water drinkable. But you have to have some kind of water at hand in the first place. Yes i agree you can suck up water out of the local Canal, River, Lake and puddle! But I would just rather have some bottled water stored away somewhere safe, ready to use just in case! It will last for ages! People say the plastic would leach into the water after a while, that might be true , but not for several years! The bigger picture is what happens when there`s no water in the tap, and no rain to fill the rain barrels? How do we cook, wash , clean and do laundry? And not forgetting flushing the toilet. When you add up even a conservative amount of water needed, its quite shocking. I know this is not an answer to any of your questions, but its worth a thought! Water Butts are a great way to store water to use for certain things in an emergency. If you look on your local council website they usually can supply them for a reasonable cost compared to most places. But I would always go for an IBC Tank ( a Black one) myself. They hold 1000l of water. Shaun.
NOOA prints that so they can justify turing the power off on hot days. It's normal temps for those states. If parasites are all that is wrong with your water, boiling it will kill those. No need for bleach, it makes the water taste terrible. There is no need for filtration. You can boil it & strain it thru your filters for added protection. I LOVE your beautiful accent (Oregoinian here), so please forgive me when i say i had a hard time understanding if you said "water bob" or "water bottle." A water bob is great. You put it in your bathtub and fill it up when you think the water will be shut off. It holds about 50 gallons. (only stating this in case you never heard of one). I LOVE you. I LOVE your smile! I LOVE your videos. I love that we live in a time that I can watch you all the way in Scotland.❤❤❤❤
We have chemicals in the water here where I have been in KY for 30 years. I fear that boiling water will only condense them and make them more dangerous. I have all sorts of systems, storage and cleaning methods for water other than boiling.
Put 2.L bottles of Water in the freezer to fill it up, as the fuller the freezer, the less the freezer has to work, So there usually some water in the freezer.
Karen, have a look at RoseRed homestead videos on emergency water - they go through a whole range of water filtration/purification options and long term water storage.
I have a Katadyn pocket filter, as used by mountain rescue teams & military units around the world. It's called "pocket" but it's quite substantial & the filter cartridge is good for up to 50,000 litres. I would still boil the water if I was anywhere near people as it doesn't filter out viruses.
I am blessed to be sitting in air conditioning tonight as many of my neighbors in surrounding areas are in the dark. We are having more frequent freak straight-line windstorms here in Texas. This is the second round of massive rain and straight-line winds in the last 2 weeks, with another round coming tomorrow. Not only is it hotter in those areas you mentioned, but also drier. According to our weather man, as the water in the West dries up, it makes the air more destabilized which causes us here in the middle of the country to get more straight-line windstorms (many reaching the threshold of being called derecho windstorms with a long line of high-speed winds moving over long distances). Tornadoes have been brutal this spring as has the flooding. I am prepared for the hurricane season starting in just a couple of days. As prepared as one can be who lives near the coast in Texas. Keep us Texans in your prayers. Yesterday the heat index was 115, and tonight, many are without power.
Steer clear of the Berkey - it is a knock off of the original and has some very dodgy certification - look for the British Berkefeld (the original), it is made by Doulton in the UK (they have been doing water filter stuff since the 1800's. It is a gravity filter like the Berkey and comes in various sizes, a six litre one goes for about £140 with two filters, it will clear out most things, but not viruses (but no filter will remove them, you need a purifier to do that) The filters can be cleaned and should last quite a while, as long as you are not filtering river water Coffee filters will do nothing apart from remove the large bits of water borne gunk like grass and mozzi eggs and will not make the water safe to drink
During storm Arwen in Aberdeenshire there were areas where there was no mains water for a couple of days. You have to pump water and there was no mains electricity and an insufficient number of generators to go round. Don't assume that you will get something from the taps, because you might not. You need a water butt so you can at least flush toilets with it.
As for the high summer temperatures combined with temporary electrical outages, I hope that everyone will consider getting at least one 10 inch battery operated fan. Yes the batteries only last about 2 -3 days running full time but during an emergency they can save lives. I’m stocking up on D-cell batteries now because I know from experience that our electricity will be off at intervals this summer. Remember that the elderly and infants are more susceptible to heat and cold than are healthy adults. Cardiac patients don’t do well sweating in excessive heat because they lose life-sustaining electrolytes.
Karen, British Berkefeld 8.5Litre model is same as the "big berkey" it is the uk version (berkefeld came before berkey i think) It is made by doulton uk company and is around £150, or for a really good jug style filter lookup zerowater. I posted info in your Discord under "daily greetings" tab Hope that helps! Lana xx
Been chucking it down here too.( Lindisfarne).I've just been reading it's to be very wet this summer boo! I have a water butt front and back gardens and they're great.
Look up the life straw family. I have both a life straw and also an older version of the family filter. I have a Berkey, only because it is a bit easier but drink rain water cleaned by lifestraw only and no problems and I live in the tropics where water borne diseases are relatively normal
If you're looking at a water filtration system, the Berkey is one of the best. Filters absolutely everything out. Just remember, any water that you collect off a roof will probably have dissolved bird poop in it. Birds like to poop up there. I don't think I'd trust coffee filters to clean it up enough to drink :). There are cheaper options than a Berkey, I'm sure you'll research it to find one that suits. I think a good water system would be very handy. It seems the average joe is needing to look after themselves more and more these days. The government is cutting corners and funding, the tax payer suffers the results. All the best on your research!
We have a Berkey with the black filters, we also have water jugs that hold 7 gallons each with the chemicals you put into them. We have a water bob to fill the bathtub full of water in case of a hurricane.
@@jeanniemullinder9038 I bought some “water preserver” on Amazon. Not too expensive. $12 US dollars to preserve 55 gallons of water for 5 years. It’s supposed to preserve clean water in a clean container for 5 years. Better than nothing, and easy to use. I plan to boil any water that we drink during an emergency regardless of the source. The “water preserver” is supposed to keep water fresh and free of bad things growing in it while it is stored. There are lots of other products that people are using such as Pool Shock. Read about these products before using, some of them may not be safe.
I looked up water butt and found out that is a big barrel which collects rainwater. Water butt is not a term most US citizens are familiar with, but it does the job as a rain water collection barrel. I need to get one of these to collect water during the dry part of our summer.
I had a dreadful stomach ache and more, after the water lines were flushed here, and supposedly the water was fine. It took ten days of suffering before I got the idea that maybe the water was the problem. Didn't bother my husband or others, but I am extremely sensitive to all kinds of things. So I used a Brita water filter and then boiled the water after it went through that, and it has taken six weeks, but I am feeling back to normal again. However, I am getting tired of refilling that because I use that water for cooking as well, and it only does a couple of litres at a time. So I looked online and saw a video on how to make one using a clay flowerpot. We bought the flowerpot, and I'd like to have it installed over what we call a "party coffee maker" (it percolates 20 cups). We happen to have one but don't use it any more. I like it because it has the spigot. We need to make an adjustment so it doesn't go too deeply into the coffee maker, but once that is done, I am looking forward to trying it out.
I watch a lot of wild camping videos, and water purification is important for them. The item used most seems to be a Sawyer mini water purification system. In the US, it's about $26. Bleach can disinfect water, and there are also water purification tablets you can get to do that. Hope that helps. (The bad thing about hot weather and storms in our area is that those storms can turn into tornadoes. This last week was really bad.)
Clay Hayes channel. Title is Newly Discovered Primitive Water Filter! It is about using sticks to filter water. Useful if you have to leave your home in a SHTF situation.
Hi Karen! I saved up and bought a Berkey over 4 years ago. It was a lot cheaper then! An AlexaPure is less. There were videos on the Internet how to make your own Berkey- like water filtration system. You still have to buy the expensive filters.
Great video! I gave my friends a Water Bob, and they used it during Hurricane Ian. They said it worked better than expected, they had fresh water and no blown particles got into the bladder. They also didn't have to go out to stand in line for water. The disadvantage is that it takes up the tub so you have to wash up somewhere else. For drinking water I use a PUR water filter (for particles). My water purifier (for particles and biological contaminants) is stored away on my 'just in case' shelf. Hope this helps. Have a great rest of the week! -Jill
I remember reading a comment once about someone pressure-canning (? I think it was) water and even gauze material inside the water to have both clean at hand. I found this rather remarkable even if it was the only time I heard about it. Seems to make sense, though.
I have my berkey for over 10 years now, I had bottle of tapwater in my car for 24 hours and there were green things growing in there, and that was the last time I had tapwater. I also have the zero water voor that shtf moment, it will take out almost everything. But yes it is a lot of money, mostly the filters that are needed. Berkey is great, better tea and coffee, and safe for drinking, you do need to clean the filters but they last for years.
A few drops of regular bleach (not scented) into your water jug will purify the water. The great thing about boil water advisories is you get to make tea! :) Jon in rural BC, Canada
If that is the case, especially out West, the humidity is low and the wildfire risk will be terrible. YES, you need to clean the water far more than coffee filters. We have very bad water here, with bad chemicals, so I fear that boiling will only condense the harmful chemicals and make them dangerous. We filter all of our water,(PUR) and store bottled water, and we have a reverse osmosis filter for the worst.I have room on my porch for many containers of clean but non-potable water (with a bit of clorine bleach in them), for cleaning and watering, and we can use the Reverse osmosis on it if need-be. I am also ordering water purification tablets to be ion the safe side.
Living on a Dime to get Rich has a couple of videos on how to make a water filter using buckets etcetera, for around 50 bucks I think. You'd have to search it. Hope that helps.
If the water goes off and you need to conserve what you have, then have a think about how you keep yourself clean without using the precious drinking water. Have a few packs of water based baby wipes, just water, no perfume etc, for cleaning yourself. Spray or foam hair cleaner. Use paper plates that can be thrown out so you don't have to wash dishes. Then you have more water to drink in your stash. I have a few cheap bottles in the garage, in the dark, but will be putting some in the freezer when I have room. Usually the water companies will try to supply bottled water, we just need to be more aware of how we use it. Longer term. A bin bag over the toilet with cat litter will work to absorb and then bin everything that should go down the pan, if you have no water...
If you are storing glass jars and bottles anyway fill them with emergency water as glass is better than plastic bottles long term cos of leeching microplastics. I use a berkey but will be looking for the cheaper filters on Amazon, haven't drank tap water for nearly 20 years due to fluoride any many other nastys! Also can't stand the heat so I use polystyrene against my Windows in summer with blinds down, vent in the cool mornings or evenings only, Windows stay closed through the day.😊
1. Don't read the Guardian. 2. Don't need to prep for something that's not happening in your area. 3. Getting to ground water would be better as it's less likely to be polluted. Know where a local source is i.e. burn or river. You're sorted where you are in Perthshire. 3. Don't give in to the fear. I live on an island with very little rain, no standing water and all potable water is made from sea water by desalination so we're dependent on bottled water for drinking. It's my one weak point in prepping but I have enough stored for about 3 months if SHTF. Also have about 250l of desalinated water for washing etc. Can only prep to the best of your abilities.
We made a water filtration system with two food grade 5 gallon buckets and water filter tubes. The filters have really gone up in price, but we got the buckets free from the bakery department at a local grocery store.
Water purification tablets are very cheap for 1 litre and 10 litres can be used with collected rainwater although I would boil too. In house everyday a water jug and filters if not uskng the kettle. If you have a bath a 'water Bob' if mains water is effected, there are lots of options depending on the household
I’m no expert but there are two systems water purification (tablets etc) water filtration (gadgets). I have both, my filter is a Katadyn Befree, it’s small, lightweight and affordable (make sure it doesn’t freeze or the filter won’t work). There are larger Berkey filters really good piece of kit but expensive
We now have 3 water butts we can use the water from. Berkey filters out all baddies including antibiotics and contraception pills from your daily drinking water! Govt need to be recommending them as part of their ‘prepping campaign’.
We’ve been using a Berkey filter for the last year and we’ve been very pleased with it. The water is so soft and sweet and we use it for drinking, washing fruit and veg and cooking veg. Original filters still going strong. Ours cost about £110.
Hi Karen. Just looked back at my Amazon purchases…. I bought a Phoenix gravity 8 litre filtration with 2 carbon filters in September last year. I paid about £120 but think they’ve gone up to £140 plus now. As I’ve said it’s been brilliant. We refill once a day….there are 2 of us using it. Best to get it soon before price goes up again!x

Filtering is useful as a first stage treatment, through cloth to remove any large particles, then boiling to kill bacteria/viruses. (Or other means of sterilisation like aqua tabs, bleach). This will not remove chemical contamination however. I have water buts to use as flushing water for the loo and a bucket for this purpose. Have some stored bottles but need to invest in more. Would love a Berkey but no money unfortunately 😔

Alaska Prepper has a video on how to make your own Berkey water filter system. Any made it for a hack of a lot cheaper. I got my Berkey through a scratch and dental. I don't know if you have them over there or not. Our town has so much junk in its water that I can't even drink a shot glass full of it.So I use mine everyday.
there are several videos showing how to make a homemade one which requires the Berkey filters and food safe buckets. I can look them up if no one else posts .
Check out Alaska Prepper, his video entitled ‘Must Have Prep - Low Budget Emergency Water Filtration’. have a Zero Water filter for several years now. They have test strips to test the water. And, comes in different sizes to fit different refrigerators. I also have the Sawyer Mini filter system that comes with a fill bag and can be attached to your existing water bottles to fill. They also sell water bottles with filtration.
Fires have already started in Arizona. We have a burn ban until September here in Pinal County. There was a fire only 5 miles from my house. It burned 8 acres, including a house. Fortunately, they got it out so quickly.
Living near Houston, I feel like I need a t=shirt with the James Taylor lyrics printed on it- I've seen fire and I've seen rain, I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end . . .
Where I live there is a fair difference in the heat map from one side of the road (older suburb with avg 700sqm blocks) to the other (new suburb, block size 300-350sqm - house taking most of the block and small garden area). It is several degrees different, even worse when fashion is dark roof tiles/iron. I'm staying on my larger block with my larger garden, plenty of rainwater in the tanks etc even though the pressure is on older people to 'downsize' their properties. Sorry, no.
I can't afford to downsize my home. It would cost more to move than to stay. Instead, I have downsized my living space within my home. Just this week switched to a Midea U shaped air conditioner to cut down on cooling the whole house. I only cool where I am. It is very quiet and more efficient than my central unit. I love that it has a remote. It got to 98F today in Texas before the storms rolled in.
I have a Berkey and you can taste the difference. Save up for one, that's what i did. You can't put a price on something as important as drinking water.
Temu have a water filter which is similar to the Berkey but only £70. Boiling and filtering, purification tablets. Survival sites and off grid living are very interesting.
But it also has no checkable history, for something that your health and possibly your life depends on, this is one area where it will pay not to go cheap
@@Lee_Proffit it’s no different from Amazon, Shein and eBay, they are all online marketplaces. Unfortunately you can’t buy these items on the high street and not everyone has £200-£300 for a Berkey.
@@suzie5772 There is a very big diffrence, TEMU offers filters with no brand or checkable history. You could just be paying for a plastic tube with a bit of cloth inside, that is not going to filter anything - and this is your life that you are talking about. Berkey also come into this category as they have faced numerous law suits in the US due to their creative certification. A small British Berkefeld (the one that Berkey have copied) with a 6 litre capacity costs £137 from Doulton. A Sawyer mini filter goes from £25 and can be found in most high street (if such things still exist)or online camping shops. Both of these have checkable history's, having been around for years. Rather than buying a none known brand, you would be safer just boiling the water as you can then be sure that it will be safe to drink 🥛🥛
It ALL needs water. Start storing water..empty milk containers, empty juice bottles, distilled water containers, etc. When the stored stuff gets old, (5 years) use it to bucket flush the loo.

The storms names are for hurricanes.
Atlantic Canada will feel those too. The wind and rain here are crazy today!
Also can't stand the heat so I use polystyrene against my Windows in summer with blinds down, vent in the cool mornings or evenings only, Windows stay closed through the day.😊
The Dalton filter is UK made and every bit as good as the Berkey. It was and still is the standard used by Brits abroad.
Camping water straws are good for just drinking out of a pond or anything. Great and pretty inexpensive for emergencies!
Yes, a couple of life straws carried in the car etc is a good idea👍
Alexapure makes a good purifier. I really like mine. Manufacturers claim it can remove even biological contaminants.
There was thunder and lightning 🌩 up in bannth yesterday karen
Water purification tablets are very cheap for 1 litre and 10 litres can be used with collected rainwater although I would boil too. In house everyday a water jug and filters if not uskng the kettle. If you have a bath a 'water Bob' if mains water is effected, there are lots of options depending on the household
I’ve just ordered a water bob
Get water purification tablets. Hikers use them to drink from streams etc.
Grayl and lifestraw. I have water purify tablets but chemical treatments won't kill parasites.
Water Filter Purifier Stainless Steel Housing Phoenix Gravity Various Sizes from £100
We now have 3 water butts we can use the water from.
Ps Bernice Bristol
Really interesting thank you
The TH-cam channel boss of the swamp has a video how to make your own Berkey water filter. You use Berkey filters but make your own containers. He makes it easy. Boss of the Swamp makes great videos
I love my Berkey filter. Worth every single penny have had it for 10 years.
Iodine tablets purify water, just make sure you know the dosage for water, You can also get drinking bottles with water purifying straws in.

Link to water filer video. I have seen other versions using plastic buckets which would be cheaper.
Water purification tablets. I got some from Amazon.
Walmart also has them
Get 2 water butts, they go down fast, I'm thinking of a 3rd one.
Fires have already started in Arizona. We have a burn ban until September here in Pinal County. There was a fire only 5 miles from my house. It burned 8 acres, including a house. Fortunately, they got it out so quickly.
Living near Houston, I feel like I need a t=shirt with the James Taylor lyrics printed on it- I've seen fire and I've seen rain, I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end . . .
Ive got some cheap bamboo blinds from b and q just hung them outside over window then take them downin September
Water purification tablets!!
We already have a hotter than normal may I San Antonio texas
Im from the states and would love to send ya some food
Sawyer filters and more i done a video on my new small channel 🤟🤟
I have a Berkey and you can taste the difference. Save up for one, that's what i did. You can't put a price on something as important as drinking water.
We are a maritime nation no comparison with mexico, i agree net zero is overblown, yep its axwet summer for sure
I live in Texas and yesterday was 98 and felt like 106. And it going to get hotter. We had over 100 days at 100 degrees or hotter last year.Yikes.
And today freak thunderstorms knocking out power and blowing windows out of building in Houston...well, I guess summer is back, early.
Hot hot hot in San Antonio
I'll let you know karen.
Net 0 = 0 people 😉
Ah the Guardian...that bastion of truth! 😂😂😂
water filtery things 🤣
Make water pure again
I have a Berkey, but not as good as advertised, distilling water is cheaper and cleaner or if you have the money reverse osmosis but that is expensive
Distilling needs energy.
It ALL needs water. Start storing water..empty milk containers, empty juice bottles, distilled water containers, etc. When the stored stuff gets old, (5 years) use it to bucket flush the loo.
I got a berkey dupe on Temu for a family member under 70euro
You are having a laugh? The temperatures are going up. Last year wasn’t the hottest year. Weather manipulation.. you really need to look this up!
