The crew of The MV Bob Barker has captured distressing footage of the devastating impacts of by-catch.
Of the total global catch of Atlantic tuna, 20% is caught in Gabon’s Exclusive Economic Zone, primarily by large industrial purse seine fishing operators.
This method of fishing involves a net being deployed around an entire area or school of fish. The lead line of the net is then pulled in, "pursing" the net closed on the bottom, preventing fish from escaping by swimming downward.
Often, non-target species such as sharks, dolphins, rays and turtles also become trapped in the nets. These unwanted species are known as by-catch.
If the animals survive the stress of the encounter and the weight of the surrounding fish as they are hauled on to deck, they are released back into the ocean. However, many die and are subsequently discarded as waste.
Through monitoring and documentation, Sea Shepherd is assisting Gabonese authorities in their efforts to mitigate incidental mortality and serious injury caused as a result of by-catch.
“By-catch is a major contributor to overfishing globally, and has devastating impacts on the world’s oceans,” said Operation Albacore Campaign Leader, Captain Peter Hammarstedt. “We commend the Government of Gabon for tackling this issue, head-on and are honoured to be able to assist in their efforts to improve monitoring and enforcement in Gabonese waters,” he concluded.

Very nice that you are protecting our environment and help those animals like sharks so that they don't die. I really hope that my grandchildren cann See tuna and sharks.

it's truly a recognizable problem! so severe it has me hurdling over my own existence as a human being, emotionally heavy and stumped by this devastating factor of truth. just mindlessly/heartlessly furthering the fish industry in the way these cruel acts are taken on pains me beyond grip. not to mention the mass amount of over fishing involved with our “kind". there needs to become a strict line to draw - or else. education about this for a more developed understanding of what is going on is effective, but I'm seeing where it isn't being recognized enough. I myself need to further make a difference as I am every day battling with this concept and trying to make a difference. what else can I do to engage more?
I discovered this channel recently, I never knew what goes on in deep ocean - and watching this - it saddens me. In this rate several hundreds or even thousands of marine species can disappear within a decade. Countries like 'cry - na🤐' destroying marine lives around the world - need to be stopped as soon as possible, there are lots of billionaires in this world - they need to support these kinda operation in their personal capacity without expecting any return profit because normal people like me doesn't have the resources to support these expensive but necessary operations.

Humans must quickly realize that if they want to survive they must live in a better harmony with the others species. First, they have to stop those poaching, those atrocities on Marine life and also on Ground life!

Among other thing ban the use of those kind of nets, like gillnets they dont care what they catch as long as they get their main product.

Farmed raised fish is as bad if not worse. Just look at few things up about it and you will find how bad it is. How do you think they feed those fish and what raising those fish does to the surrounding environment?

You want to convince yourself that eating fish will be okay if done a certain way. You know deep down that there is no good way to consume fish products but you don't want to change.
