Black gospel choirs learn music by rote. Culturally, it's an extension of negro spirituals where slaves sang repetitive songs while working, often with hidden messages on how to escape to freedom. This choir is following specific signals from the director on what to sing. He can improvise and stretch this song out 15 minutes if he wanted to, and the choir will follow him.
