- Highland dancing competitions during the Braemar Gathering 2017 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Here competitors dance the Hullachan (its Gaelic name, also called the Reel o'Tulloch) a dance of four, and the Irish Jig, traditionally performed in a green and red outfit.
Having been a competitive Irish dancer for many years, it's so interesting to see the differences (besides the obvious use of arms and strict straight knees). Irish involves more of very quick, fancy footwork and swift leaps, whereas highland focuses on powerful leg control and long-drawn out jumps. Both are unique and beautiful, and I wish I had taken more than just a couple introductory highland lessons back when I was still dancing!
interesting analysis. Good to have that commentary with someone of your experience, thanks
A Big thanks for posting. Probably the best I have seen.
My daughter used to do an amazing Irish Jig. I really enjoyed this vid.
Its highland fling not irish
@@LucyBrownless Nope, that is not the Highland Fling it's correct name is the Hullachan, or in layman's terms the Irish Jig representing an Irish washerwoman giving it laldy. The male version has him twirling around the shillelagh.
WOW Wonderful!! SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
God Bless You All!!!
I love Scottish dance
Beautiful reminds of a stag just prancing away through the fields.
Das is richtig COOL!Thx Girls!!!!!
So love for Irish Jig
Beautiful to watch.
I cant believe, are beautiful. thx
Fantastic reel from those girls. I'm assuming premier. My daughter is only beginner but she loves this dance.
Championships I think, I know the girls in the back and they are national champions so could be champions not sure. I haven’t competed in abour4 years so beginners x
Same as the luster of cherry blossoms peculiar to Japan .

Very trying ... well done! Thank уоu so much...👏👏👏👑💓📌
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed one of our great traditions.
What a gorgeous stumble upon (mine not yours).
My dance class calls the hullacan “the square reel” just for memory even though it’s in a square for like 5 seconds 😂😂
j'adore

The blonde one in the red kilt has the best technique
ITSTESS * the one with the blue kilt and black hair is a world champion (Michelle Gordon)
Crackin piper!
this is kinda like a dance competition
Well done bonny lassies
They seem to be constantly threatening to punch me in the face during the Irish jig.
After finding out my ancestry and what not i been learning more amd more about scottland ireland and whales, and i was wondering what the history of the highland dancing?
gangrail originally a dance only done exclusively by males as a war dance generally as a celebration after
so cute
Totally bonkers.
Without battle axes it's no real competition
The fist means "I punch you"?
Thus is not a jig it is a Strathspey and Reel. Sorry for my spelling. The second dance is an Irish Jig. I am afraid the footwork and stamina need more training. Ballet girls works wonders for ones core.
@mairiconnell6282...the secod one is a scottish jig.....scottsh jigs predate the irish ones..
Michelle Gordon truly is the best :)
During the golden age of the clans wasn't it the males who did this dancing?
Black Baingan yeah, it was but over time it has become more somthing feminine.
Black Baingan yes until about 40 years ago. My mum tried to get me into highland dancing but I resisted lol
Didn’t they use crossed swords??
yes indeed! the highland fling has military origins each clan had their own adaptation.
@@sherrythompson2667 yes! It’s the sword dance we still do it!
They're not dancing on the beat?
MM168NSX yes they are. the Irish jig is a difficult dance to learn and these dances were to perfection. I am a 12 year old championship dancer and I know that they are doing it very well.
I love scotch wiskies ! 🍻🍺😍😋
Poor dancers trying to dance with constant interference from announcements
It's a Highland Games, many other events are happening simultaneously. The dancers are well used to it
I don't know about you, but I would let 109 run my farm any day.
