  • Competitors taking part in the Hullachan (Reel of Tulloch) Scottish Highland Dance during the 2019 Braemar Gathering Highland Games in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This was part of the open competition for dancers from across the world, as there are also local categories.
The Reel of Tulloch usually follows a Strathspey, which is one of the few dances in which competitors dance with each other, but they are still being marked individually. The dance call also be performed as a dance on its own in which case it is then called the Hullachan. It is said to have originated in the churchyard of Tulloch Church near Ballater in Deeside where on a cold winter's Sunday morning, the minister was late for his service and parishioners tried to keep warm by dancing. Hullachan is a Scottish Gaelic name also used in ancient Irish Gaelic culture, meaning "party".

All of these dancers are quite good! I can tell you, as a former dancer and regular attendee of games, it's rare that I watch a single dance without noticing some major flaws. Great job!

And you all placed first, in my heart. Thank you for a beautiful dance of the families long ago, whom am sure are smiling at all of you in nodding approval.

In a Highland Games there are multiple events taking place simultaneously, all over the games field. There will be pipe band competitions, solo piping competitions, athletics track and field events, the hill race, the traditional "heavy" events eg Tossing the Caber, heavy weight thrown over the bar etc, Tug o' War, children's races, and of course the dancing events. I would say that the voice which irritates you is actually commentating live on the events as they take place, announcing results, calling for competitors to assemble for next events, providing information and possibly history of events, and welcoming visitors from abroad. This adds to the general hubbub of a multi-activity gathering which is enjoyed by many. Competitors will "tune out" the background noise to focus on their own specialism, and spectators will place themselves around the arena depending on their favourite activities, or may over the course of the day wander round the whole arena watching a bit of everything. Noisy but atmospheric!
There are also dedicated indoor Highland Dancing competitions held outwith the Highland Games season, where there will be all the dancing you could wish for, without any other sports or musical competitions to distract from the dancing.
