There are some useful phrases when paying for things. For example: 1. When using a credit card, they'll ask how many charges to divide the total amount into (I think). This isn't a concept in north america. 2. Most countries have credit cards with chips but I think most cards in the US still don't have those so what happens then. 3. What happens if my credit card pin fails. 4. What if they only accept cash. 5. Are there common phrases dealing with sales tax and getting a refund for tourists? I'm sure there are more scenarios dealing with this situation.
@@TakoAkiJapanese There's actually a few things, I have family that lives there so that's the easy answer. I also really want to try the food there, and I think the lights are so beautiful!
This is so useful, ive been going around in convenience stores in japan for 5 months and paying without a word, one time they were asking the "fukuro owake shimasuka?" And shook my head no without a word and carried 7 bags of chips with my bare hands 💀💀💀💀
This video is so helpful and brings back so many memories of when I was in Japan and often went to the 7-11 or other コンビニ and greeted by the friendly staff. Thanks so much!!! Please make more of these helpful kinds of videos!! 😊
I've been in Japan this year. First time visit. For anyone interested in going to Japan, I highly recommend a big emphasis on learning convenience store Japanese. Unless you're there on some kind of all inclusive trip, conbini are THE way to sustain yourself. They're really everywhere and their products are so good. You can get by just on english ans sign language, but being able to understand what the cashier want from you makes things that much more smooth. One thing to be said about this video though - they no longer assume you're going to need at least one bag - the bags nowadays cost a couple yen and they now usually ask one of these things depending on what you're trying to buy and whether you have visibly some kind of own bag/backpack on you: Do you want a bag? How many bags do you need? Do you want hot and cold things separated in their own bags?
Thank you so much for making this. When I was in Japan, I went to Konbini very often. I can guess what they wanted to say but couldn't catch them. Happy to see this video! ありがとうございます
I "learned" Japanese 15 years ago from an aging Japanese linguist and while she was such a sweet lady I didn't retain a lot. It was very similar to how you learn Latin or other dead languages in school. All grammar and little practical knowledge. I wish channels like yours were around back then to compliment my studies. It would have helped so so much.
When I did visit japan, hand gestures works well. Yeah its true per experience not all staff speak clearly but I know because I am also slow in catching the spoken phrases. Now I can only catch 7/10 and sooner perfect 10. Your English is fast and accurate. Keep posting videos.
What I’ve found is they have lots of ways of asking if you want a bag, but whatever they’re saying, it’s always if you want a bag. So 9/10 times you can just say yes or no (depending on what you want) to the first thing they ask you. Then just say you’d like to pay by card or suika, and that’s it.
Very helpful video. When I'm in Japan and I go to a coffee shop like Starbucks and get a cinnamon rolI or other pastry, I'll hear that phrase 'atatamemasu ka?' (あたためます か?) every time. I heard it every day. I usually respond 'sonomamadaijobu' ('そのままだいじょぶ’)? They understand, but I was never sure if it sounded dumb or not.
Good content! As someone that just moved to tokyo is great that you go into greater detail like the Atatame and Hashi parts that most other videos don't cover.
Thanks for the video. I'm in Japan in October and November. I understand simple conversations, but restaurant, hotel and such dialogues I have to practice. I'm so nervous before the first visit xD
the way you talk is exactly the way I heard when I was buying at the konbini. Gosh I know what to answer but they just talked too fast. glad i found this for my practice... domo arigato gozaimasu :)
Thanks for this lessons ^^. I Think the Number with the Bag is now realy important. The bags in the convinion stores cost something now and the question will probably be standard now, right?
Hi, I am actually living in Japan for my studies, and I am wondering if it is ok to say greetings like good morning, good afternoon, or good evening before paying the bill. Thank you
I have a question, which dialect should a beginner learn? Actually I started with the kanto- ben. I think that I like the Kansai- ben a lot. But I am turning things bad by confusing between the two. That's why I need a suggestion.
I used to get quite lot of Japanese tourists when I worked in Central London, so I'd be the one asking ポイントカードありますか。(yes we had to persuade everyone to get a card, even people leaving the next morning. KPIs amirite. I learned the whole spiel in Japanese 「こちらのポイントカードありますと、次の買い物は15%割引きでございます」 ugh) Which after watching your video, I feel like I definitely sounded very curt compared to the correct way to say it!
@@TakoAkiJapanese English speakers usually say Spanish and French are the sexiest languages. Because some Japanese women speak in higher pitches than western ears are used to (at rapid speed), maybe it's not considered as sexy but Japanese male voices are ... in my opinion😆
Very nice! Finally I know how to avoid the 3million plastic bags I get here! I have a question. So, they tell me the price, I pay the money, they give me the receipt (and return money). As I take my items, money and receipt, what do I say? Is ありがとう too casual? And どうも? Is ありがとうございました too polite? Every day I struggle with this, haha. Not saying anything or just bowing seems to be too rude to me? thanks a lot!
i feel a little bit pressure because he talks so fast, thats why i cant follow the pronunciation, i know that theres a caption but is still need how he says ita thats why i keep rewinding, so a little tip from the viewer is take your time explaining, dont rush it.
Were you in trouble while traveling in Japan? If so, share your experience for tourists planning to come to 🇯🇵
