  • This video will be a hands on tutorial on how to properly care for your Sagittaria aquarium plant. Whether you find it in the wild or buy it online, I teach exactly how to clean and prep your plant. What kind of parameters they prefer; all the way to it's propagation! I also reveal a way to identify Sagittaria that is only unique to that aquatic plant. This tutorial is the same for Dwarf Sagittaria, Narrow leaf Sagittaria, and Broadleaf Sagittaria!
    I'll also be showing exactly what it looks like in the wild; whether submerged or emersed grown, so you'll be able to identify this plant on your own if scavenging for it. Sagittaria can take on 2 completely different forms and I teach exactly what effects it's appearance.

    Hi from CA, been a lurker for a while. Thanks for all the informative videos. I have a 100 gallon, filled to 75 gallons with a red eared slider. I partitioned about 15 gallons off for plants, snails, and some neons. So far, so good, 1 year in on that tank, although we've had the turtle for 20 years. It was time for him to get an upgrade. His old 40 breeder has become my garage plant farm with tons of different stems and epiphytes, some amanos, 4 hillstream loaches and a small school of white clouds. Finally, my daughter has a tank with a pea puffer, some amanos, and various plant. I find the hobby good for my inner peace as well. Keep up the great work!

      I am so happy you decided to say hi! That habitat sounds so epic! Honestly, I want to see that overstocked 40 with plants. Really impressed about that habitat you continue to improve for your slider. They should come with a warning they'll outlive your current generation! Thank you for sharing and your continuous support!

      Always a joy hearing from you Angie.
      I think I'm essentially encouraging people to get out of their house and go investigate your surroundings.
      I'm finding extremely enjoyable. I absolutely love watching plants do their thing in water. Local stream is a treat. Watched that wild Sagittaria go through nearly it's entire season.
      If ever go hunting. Tell me what gems you may have found.
      You helped us fix a bunch of boredom over summer. Much appreciated.
      Now Alex and I literally go stare at plants in the woods nearly everyday.
      Idk why, but he's always curious if he can eat whatever plant. It's crossed my mind a couple times to say "Yes, and it's delicious. Go for it."

      That's great! Im quite positive your neighbor will have zero issues with you taking some of their hands. I'll bet it grows all the way around the edge and a couple feet deep. You should ask them if they put it there or if it just happened.

    Very nice. I have been collecting and growing various Sagittaria here just N of Houston for a few years now. Made same observations as You have and have been quite interested by this particular genus. We are coming up onto the cooler season and soon local plants will go into the submersed rosette stage. I am interested in contacting you in person. How should we do that? Thanks.

    I have a tank next to a window that has to be open all day (cannot use curtain). The original idea was to have an all Dwarf Sagittaria tank. But I'm finding that green water is taking over. Would you say that once the Dwarf Sagittaria becomes more abundant in the tank, it will be able to control the green water. Or should I toss the idea of an all-Dwarf Sag tank, and start adding some other varieties of plants as well? If so, what other plants would be recommended?

    • @yourtap
      @yourtap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sagittaria takes a long time to spread. It doesn't grow nearly as fast as other runner plants. It never hurts to add more plants however, I think a quicker solution would be to use window tint on your aquarium being that it's so close to your window. You can buy that stuff for cheap at hardware stores or like a Walmart. Buy a roll of it. It'll save you a bunch of pain in the rear juggling act with plants.
      The problem is undoubtedly the sunlight. Every problem has a solution 🤙

    • @biblelightbulb
      @biblelightbulb ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yourtap in the long term, when the Dwarf Sag eventually becomes abundant, at that time do you think it would be able to adequately control the green water?
      My other concern is that if I start adding other plants, the Dwarf Sag might swamp and stifle the other plants with its runners.

    • @yourtap
      @yourtap  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@biblelightbulb I get your concern and it is sound. I've planted Subulata before and forgot about it.
      It became buried beneath a bunch of Vallisneria. A year later I had a tangled mess.
      I don't typically cut away from my plants because I like to see them just cover my entire tank. With that said, I wish I had kept up with both those plants.
      You can certainly defeat algae with more plants. That's a battle that is currently taking place in your aquarium. I fight for all the light.

    • @biblelightbulb
      @biblelightbulb ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yourtap After 2 months of the Dwarf Sagittaria doing wonderfully and sending out runners, now in the 3rd month a lot of the leaves are degrading, getting holes in the leaves. Coincidentally, at the 2nd month I cut down the amount of light to get rid of blue-green cyano algae. What's your advice?

  • @biblelightbulb
    @biblelightbulb ปีที่แล้ว

    I set up a 3 foot tank with entirely Dwarf Sagittaria. Since Dwarf Sag, once it sends out runners, can get quite crowded, my question is: do you think it is wise to add Java Moss? I'm thinking Dwarf Sag plus abundant Java Moss might get too dense - particularly if I'll be having Corydoras which need space on the bottom surface to move around. Do you have experience with combining Java Moss with heavily planted Sagittaria and Vallisneria?

    • @yourtap
      @yourtap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question RZ 🤙
      To be honest. I dislike Java Moss. I prefer working with Crystal Worts.
      Subwasertang is my favorite to use over moss any day. It's uniformed, easily maintained as it grows as a bush without being planted. Float it, sink it, attached to wood or rock doesn't matter.
      Moss will eventually grow like a spiderweb and can get on everything if not properly kept up with. Hope that helps.
