    The spoon with the gilt bowl is actually a mustard spoon, George. The gold wash is meant to protect the silver from the acidic nature of the mustard. Popular with prime rib - think horseradish and mustard on the side of your beef.

    George, you are a treasure! So much knowledge of the past,all aspects of the past, is being lost. If the kids today ran out of batteries and there was no TV or internet would they survive? I mean really? Do they have the skills to try and make anything? Grow anything? Talk to each other face-to-face?
    Don't get me wrong, I love my cell phone because of channels like yours, quilter's, furniture restorers, gardeners, etc.
    As a World culture, I see such magnificent glass,pottery,crocheting, etc. Is it lost?

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think we're losing a lot of that as factory work replaces hand work. I also wonder what will happen to people who don't know how to do anything without electronics. I'm glad you enjoy the channel and thanks so much!

    That was so educational, George! Love the appraisal fairs; so much rich history. I really loved the coverlet & thought for sure you'd say Scottish, because alot of Scots settled in the Appalachian mountains in WV. On camera, it even looked like it had a little bit like a plaid weave to it. My grandmother was from Ireland & my grandfather was a Scot. I know, what a combination! I'm curious what our clan's tartan looks like.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My clan merged into the Armstrong clan on the one side where I have a trace of Scot's blood. I think the other side came from near the border with England also, but farther to the west. The Scots influence I'm sure was felt in design, but the method to do these was developed in France, I believe

    Hey George! That "Sandwich" decanter set is something in my line of interest. I have a couple decanter sets...I mostly go after the water sets...but I like those, too. That seemed to be a really good price for it, too. I liked that Duncan "Daisy and Button" pitcher! That would make a really pretty set, it the tumblers were with it. That Persian tray was really interesting. I know absolutely nothing about those type items, but I've always liked the patterns on them. Love the tortoise shell box! I used to have a TON of that Indiana Glass "Harvest"...gave all of it away. Not my favourite. I go for the older pieces, and I'm not fond of ice lips, either. I really enjoy these appraisal videos! The fact that the appraisals bring people together, to find out what they have and what it's worth is fantastic! Thanks!!!!!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The tortoise shell! You could never recreate that (legally) now. I like seeing a few things that seem to be unique, the Persian tray was another good one...I have only a little experience with such items, I had an estate once that had early 20th century Persian metal in it. I have the ton of Indiana Harvest that you gave away I think! Did really like the Amberette piece myself, and I'm not usually into amber glass. I like the whole togetherness of the antique and vintage world, it's fun to get the "general public" in for appraisals to stoke their interest

    Ditch that cloth that you are appraising on - better to see detail on wooden table top or plain cloth You should get some tablecloths with your logo on them for a professional look for your increasing number of appraisals. I’d be tempted to get a turntable too so you can look round a piece without having to move it around in your hand😀

    My first impression, and what I still think is, that "The Box" at 18:40 is a matched pistols case (?) with some sort of center divider now absent. Probably a custom made presentation with the plaque, the felt, and the specificity of the other compartment shapes (probably for tools, wadding, bullets or balls, oilers etc.) I have spent a lot of time with vintage firearms, and this seems very in keeping/similar to what I am familiar with. But of course I could be wrong.

So I paid a little more than it’s value today, not too bad. Not a deal, but not a loss either.
