Broken Down In The Middle Of Nowhere?

  • Everything was fine until it wasn't!! We broke a leaf spring on our trailer's axle that left us unable to move until we figured out a way to get back to civilization. What do you do if your own camp trailer, motorhome or other RV breaks down with no help available? What are your options?

    Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

    Good job at the jury rigging. That reminded me having two flats within a mile of each other about 70 miles south of Gallop NM on a Friday, before a three day weekend. The tire place in Gallop was closed until Tuesday and had to order the tires, which took another day. We were there for days on an Indian reservation in the desert, but we had the only trees we could see anywhere for shade and a windmill fed water tank. The good out weighed the bad being there, we were surrounded by hundreds of sheep one morning and the hikes we took everyday were beautiful. I'm glad it went smooth for you two, ya gotta love it.

    Something you could do yourself is to replace both springs with much longer ones. With a longer, wider and thicker spring it will ride nicer and have more travel. If you do this mod you could add bump stops and shocks if you need them. If you look at places like Jags and Summit racing they will sell spring pockets for the front and shackles made for race cars just for relocating the springs for wider tires. Even if the the springs are thicker and wider if they are 15" longer they wont be as stiff as yours now. It's just an idea.

    Gee, I Don't Know How I Missed This Episode. Ouch. The More I think about it, the 'Jerry-Rigging' you did with the wood, old rusty wire and some rope was Very Clever. Great Job. I'm Not certain if you have a 'Higher Clearence' on your Rig??? But that would not have made Any Difference with a 'Direct-Hit'. I Don't know how they are going to do it, but at the Dealer's Shop they will 'Reverse the Axel' (on my trailer)Somehow to Allow Extra-Room to Add Larger-Wheels making for Higher Clearance. (We Shall See) But Then Again, a Direct Hit is going to RIP Things Up. I'm Glad it wasn't Worse. (Now I'm starting to think: 'Skid-Plate') Ya, a lightweight piece of steel can be Fashioned to Cover where the Wheels attach to the Axle. Maybe That is Doable??? Well in Any Case Rick & Linda, Ya Made It Safe. I Especially liked the Moment of Prayer. Cool. Extra Help for Us 21st. Century 'Pioneer-Gypsy-Explorers' is Always Welcome. 🙏 Funny, you Drove Through a Strange and Spooky place Near Beryl Jtc., Through Escalante Valley, Rt. 56. I'll tell you More about that area later. Well Again, You All are Safe. That's the Most Important Thing.👌 Cheers 🤗 Erik

    better save that chunk of wood, and pick up a roll of bailing wire incase (God forbid) something happens to the other side. we have ALWAYS packed bailing wire, and duct tape along with the normal hand tools in our little tool box, and we DO-NOT leave home w/o it...that chunk of cable you found is just not malleable enough , and too hard to work with, i realize when you're out in the boonies, beggars can't be choosers, but a more thorough ground search may have turned up some plain old wire....i know.....the old arm chair quarterback....SORRY!!!! no you both did an awesome job of doing what you had to do to get R done. great vid.

    But when you 2 prayed I knew it was going to be okay ☺️
    I know it's after the fact... but my advice would be a roll of bailing wire, good duct tape and let a little air out of the tires when you're on dirt roads whether the axles good or broken, it helps absorb some of the shock. Great fix/ ingenuity !!! It's what our forefathers would have done 😂😊🧐

    Nice to see someone jump into action instead of sitting on the curb and crying about it. In those circumstances I get really irritated, I've been a professional mechanic for 42 years and have $250K in tools...... at the shop. I generally don't even carry a screwdriver or a pair of pliers. I'm in the process of setting up a camper shell on my truck with all my camping gear, I'm going to build a lockable box inside to be able to lock my 2 road service boxes up so I don't find myself completely tool-less.

    The problem is the front of the spring broke. Jack the trailer up to relive the pressure. Undo the total spring and reverse it. This will make it where the spring will drag the axel instead of trying to push it. Then do the wood under the axel bit to keep the tires from rubbing. Hopefully the strap pulling will work.

    • @badgerpa9

      They don't go off road but they towed me from a gravel road.

    • @P_RO_
      @P_RO_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It varies a bit. If it's a marked government-owned road they will usually pull you (if their truck won't get hurt) but they are not obligated to drive even an inch off the pavement. I find that tossing the driver some cash gets you all kinds of special services they're not supposed to be providing, and with two closed mouths we let AAA cover the towing anyway.
