  • Do Battlefield Tactics actually make a difference in Bannerlord? If so, how much? In this episode we explore this question.
    Welcome back future Khans, Emperors, Jarls and Sultans of Calradia! We're continuing to show our late-game campaign including huge battles, and winning(most) of these battles by deploying advanced tactics to overcome superior enemy forces. Our entire channel is dedicated to helping players improve their field command and if that's your desire, or just want to see huge, dramatic battles, you've come to the right place.
    This channel is designed to help players further their field command to the point where they will fluidly move troops depending on situations, and win battles like a Legend.
    Please comment, like and subscribe if you're interested in more of my ultra-late-game campaign, that may end up ending in utter despair, but that's the challenge of it. Any challenge where success is assured is no challenge at all.
    My campaign is an extremely late-game campaign where I am resolved to give no peace to these scum Kingdoms attacking me - seven of the eight have been at war for years, with only Sturgia at a neutral stance. My family of warriors is now large though and with what remaining strength and valor we can must, we stand against the map of Calradia.
    Join me on this adventure if you like huge battles, the use of advanced tactical maneuvers and intense Bannerlord gameplay, and subscribe to my channel if you want to follow along. This campaign is very lightly modded:
    I use five to eight mods:
    Reinforcement System Mod(highlighted in this video):
    www.nexusmods....
    Time Pass Mod: Realistic Lighting for battles and town scenes(the time CHANGES):
    www.nexusmods....
    RTS Mod(for better unit flag colors/overhead view and using other characters in battle):
    www.nexusmods....
    Immersive Battlefields:
    A great mod that adds battle cries, roaring troops and more:
    www.nexusmods....
    Lord Retinue Uptier(Makes the enemy forces stronger, much less peasants and lower ranked troops)
    www.nexusmods....
    Improved AI Troops(Also makes enemy lords and their armies tougher by giving them a higher daily xp rate. This means you'll routinely face armies with HUGE numbers of the highest tier units, sometimes four or five times the normal amount in vanilla Bannerlord): www.nexusmods....
    Death for all: This mod allows you to set the rate at which nobles die more often. I want both a harder challenging late-game but also a more realistic game. If you're cut down with a massive aserai two-handed axe, you shouldn't just be injured 99.9% of the time. It's a very customizable mod so you can just a little more death or set the death rate so high you get several deaths every battle. The number I often like is '10', some deaths but not a massacre of nobles...
    www.nexusmods....
    I also use the Dismemberment Plus Mod: It's highly customizable and works seamlessly with the new beta(and versions back to 1.28). I thoroughly recommend it if you enjoy carnage!:
    steamcommunity...
    I've also used Realistic Battle Mod in the past and highly recommend it for Ai and battle realism BUT I find the pace too slow for my taste and the AI is actually rather predictable after a half dozen battles. Still I wanted to put a plug in for it here, it's a GREAT mod and highly configurable. www.nexusmods....
    Much of the music and inspiration for this and other videos in the channel are inspired by Epic History TV - probably THE best channel on youtube(and the internet for that matter) covering the Napoleonic wars. With amazing work Epic History TV takes you through the dramatic and incredibly story of Napoleon covering all of his most famous battles. I HIGHLY recommend it.

    While I am confident the vast majority of you regular viewers and subscribers love and KNOW tactics are vital for success, this video's purpose is to illustrate definitively to those who haven't discovered this fact yet, or for those who are new(er) to the game. I hope this helps a GREAT many folks out there to start using complicating tactics to roll over their foes. Happy crushing fellas!

      I appreciate the kind words brother, but one of my goals and so far it has been successful with those who have taken it up, is to help other players reach a high level of gameplay through tactics. There are many guys that I can think of off the top of my head who started with Commons like yours then their next comment was something like damn last night I used some of these tactics and defeated a force twice my size, now some of these same guys are suggesting tactics that I had to my own gameplay. Don't sell yourself short, keep getting better and maybe someday you'll be teaching me.

    I’m not as advanced as you but I took a liking to the tactics immediately. I think it’s so fun to be able to land a tricky win when stuck in a tough spot. I’m playing a save now where the king gave me a bunch of land in the western empire. Through solid timing and tactics I was able to repel being attacked by 3 kingdoms and begin to grow my new territory. My favorite part was defending a siege against the Khuzait of over 1500 troops with my 800. They didn’t bother building siege towers and didn’t destroy our catapults. They tried to climb the ladders. It was ridiculous. They nearly broke through once on one side but with good archer placement we held it and reclaimed it. Then we got to sally out and rip them apart.

      Love it, siege is my focus right now besides my two campaigns. A great siege defense is hard to beat for drama and intensity - plus tactics CAN still be used, as you've seen and already know...

    Fun tactic I use for sieges. The Blitzkrieg. Just put all your units to one side with ladders, spread archers out (too close for catapults or balistas to hit them) and just rush one side of the castle/town. Works for me even being outnumbered 3 to 1. Just because they will spread their units over 2 portions of the castle/town

    personally when im fighting a larger army i try to draw them into favourable terrain, like for examplr if i have more or better cavalry i will draw them into open battle where i can more effectively use my cavalry, if i have less troops i will try to fight on a beach, bridge or valley map that has natural chokepoints if the enemy has cavalry superioty i will fight in a forest terrain as the trees break up cavalry charge, and if the enemy has more or better archers i will fight at night as ranged troops has an accuracy debuff in night battles

    • @Flacto-vs6np
      @Flacto-vs6np 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      if you want to do alot of melee combat and your cavalry are batannian horsemen, cataphracts, kuzait lancer or druznik champions, you can use them as a bodyguard and you can hammer and anvil with them, provided you have a decent line of infantry and your archers are protecting the infantry from flanking(position archers on the flank to shoot infantry that try to wrap around your infantry formation)

    • @Flacto-vs6np
      @Flacto-vs6np 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      another method i like to use is basically a pyramid shape of 5 infantry squares(with spaces between), an archer line in between the last 2 squares, and you basically micro your cavalry around

      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Those three main ideas and tactics ARE great tactics bud. The pyramid shaped defense has been pretty well documented by others across youtube and it works. I like to add to this defense skirmishes and a secondary cav unit to defend the archers as a shield-wall/block. Basically though if you're that adept at tactics, there may not be much I can help you with! :)

      @@HeadlessHorsemanProductions there is 1 thing that im trying to execute where i try to use the charge of the vlandian banner knights in tandem with the killing power of shock infantry to kill enemy troops, is there a way that you know how to make it work? the only times ive seen that happen are only when my banner knights charge the enemy reinforcements and the shock infantry that are nearby just so happen to be there to have the opportunity to take advantage of the situation. im thinking of a way to use this in such a way that allows me to kill the 1st wave of enemy troops as the initial wave tends to be what causes the most casualties in my battles

    I am not sure I concur about the AI decision making. Chess is not as adaptive as people think. There are limited move sets for any board position, because there are a vast number of potential board positions it is hard to know all the best counters and moves and recall them at game time which is why AI has a real advantage. However a battle such as this or a space battle with even more axis of movement AI would need a database of all the possible formations and all the best algorithms for those setups. AI lacks the ability to modify on the fly or adapt to hybrid strategies.
    TL;DR AI needs presets for each situations which makes games like chess or Go! just a processing issue. Games like this require a level of 'simulation' to get that data in each second and redo that constantly that current computing cannot handle. Perhaps what you are describing will be true IF quantum computing is ever a real thing, but it may be the alchemy of our time.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting perspective. It sounds like you're saying the vastly overwhelming amount of possible moves in Bannerlord actually *exceeds* chess and hence for an AI learning model to handle it, it would need something more exponential than we have today? You sound much more knowledgeable about this subject than me, so it's great to get some intellectual perspective here...

    Uhhh. . .absolutely
    There’s a region on the south east side of Sturgia, bordering the western empire that has three bridges.
    With only ~200 soldiers, maybe 90 Sturgian infantry, 80 Battanian archers, and ~30 mixed cavalry, I defeated an opposing Vlandian force of ~1,100
    I did this by blocking off one of the bridges with my infantry in shield wall formation, with cavalry immediately behind them to stab at any hostile making it around or behind the formation (with the bridges, it’s hard to position troops to entirely block off the way. Sometimes there’s gaps on either side of the formation.
    Infantry units carry their shields on their left, so I positioned my archers to the left hand side of the bridge (facing the enemy)
    And the Battanian archers decimated. Sturgian Spearmen with their shields held the line. Cavalry supported them.

    If Bannerlord doesn't require tactics to win its battles, then why would we be playing a tactical battle simulator game. Tactics are what it should be all about.
    Edit: PC is more nuanced than the console controls have to offer, but it's still a very decent tactical experience worth playing, in my opinion.

    Hey, good video! As always, very interesting information and strategies you showed us.
    I do have a bit of a struggle to command my cavalry in battle, which tends to be a third of the total of my army. After trying to use the different strats you show in your videos, I either have my cav following me, trying to get them to flank the enemy, or I have them doing a shield wall protecting the flanks of my archers and infantry, also on a shield wall in the preparation mode of the battle.
    One of the main issues I think I'm having is that after the first big confrontation, I'm not sure how to react to or adapt my formation or strategy after that point. I do try to use the land clifs or high grounds to get an advantage, but I end up losing quite a bunch of troops after the enemy engages me differently and moves their troops around me. I win most of the fights at equal strength, but I haven't managed to win against an enemy with higher-tier troops and outnumbers. My lack of adaptability in battle and poor use of my cavalry prevent me from achieving an even greater victory.
    ( I also tend to enjoy too much filling my need for blood and forget for moments to manage my troops, but I'm working on that one already xD )
    If you have any advice for me, I would be thankful. Anyway, have a great day man, and keep these great quality videos coming!

      I feel I struggle with that very same aspect of commanding Cav. I'm not a pro, but I've started using the Aseria Vanguard Faris or Sturgian Horse Raiders. With them I'll put them in a shield wall directly behind my main infantry line. During the initial push they'll throw their javelins as well as stopping the Cav charge. If I don't see them dropping I'll leave them like that for the first wave. Once the enemy start regrouping I'll either charge them or put them out in front of my new formation as a square. Then I attempt to do the "killbox" that Tactical Enlightened uses so often. If my Cav are being eaten up on the initial wave I'll either pull them back until later in the battle or just charge them. I hope this helps.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For sure command FIRST, then fight. Try a few battles where you fight minimally and focus hard on command. I often use my cav defensively to start, then offensively when the enemy is moving, vulnerable, stacked up together or regrouping, then I charge. I think it helps to have an army 'identity'. Are you a cav based army, infantry or archer? If it's balanced, it's probably harder to use your pieces in concert. I'd try 40-50% cav, then you can use the infantry and archers in a supportive role.

      @@HeadlessHorsemanProductions Thank you for your answer 😄
      It's my first campaign and I didn't know much about troops, so I kinda bought troops and upgraded them without a strat in mind. I do like using my archers more because I often find them a good spot to rain arrows on the enemy, plus I'm with the kingdom of the Battanian which I think owns the best archers. I do like managing my infantry but more like a punching ball, that attack when the enemy is repositioning. I made a lot of cavs at first, for the movement speed on the map and being able to catch caravans or small armies.
      I have only one party active of 165 troops so, I often request reinforcements of troops to help fight like a 500+ enemy.
      I try to do 30% infantry 50% archers and the rest mostly cavs with few horse archers sometimes. I will try to split my companions into three parties, so I can have a bigger army on my own.
      I will try doing a 50% cav army 30% archers 20% infantry. But I don't like the small shield of the Battanian cavs even if they are upgraded, it's not the best I think, I shouldn't make anymore from this kingdom. I'll try to get them from the Empire and Sturgians. The Aserai kingdom is always at war with me so I won't be able to recruit many there.
      Thanks again for your answer !

      @@brettsalisbury1527 My cavs are 90% Battanians scouts I think that's part of the issue 😆. They have a small round shield that don't really protect them. They might as well use a tray of food as cover haha. I'll try to get some Sturgian Horse Raider, I think they're pretty well equiped and they can do a real shield wall.

With 0skill in tactic they do charge command and lose battle without managing. I do shildwall + F4 infantry and bow F4 when archers are close =F6 than after cavalry do the job infantry line formation and charge. Cavalry square formation to face enemy cavalry and charge archer and charge infantry from behind.(My first battle I was attacked by AI 430 vs 400.
