Bishop Rance Allen
Vocalist, guitarist, pianist formed the Rance Allen Group, and songwriter Rance Allen with his brothers Tom (drums) and Steve (bass guitar); another brother, Esau (percussionist), joined the group on an occasional basis. During an appearance at a gospel talent contest in Detroit, Michigan, they came to the attention of one of the judges, record promoter Dave Clark, who worked for Stax Records.
The group was the first to be signed to the Stax imprint Gospel Truth, and they recorded for the Stax organization throughout the 1970s. In 1972, the group appeared in the documentary film Wattstax. Following this appearance, the group was named "Best Religious Group" by the National Association of Television and Radio Announcers (NATRA). David Porter co-produced the group's 1975 album A Soulful Experience, for which he wrote an autobiographical song, "Just Found Me."
Rance Allen is an American Bishop and gospel musician, and leader of the Rance Allen Group. Known for his extensive vocal range and powerful singing voice, Allen became known as the main lead vocalist and the leader of the influential group.
He has been the pastor of New Bethel Church Of God In Christ in Toledo, since its July 1985 establishment. In November 2011, Rance Allen was elevated to the office of Bishop in the Church of God in Christ, for the Michigan Northwestern Harvest Jurisdiction.
Allen was born in 1948 in Monroe, Michigan to Thomas and Emma Pearl Allen. He has 11 siblings: six sisters and five brothers.
Allen founded the Rance Allen Group in Detroit in 1969 joined by his brothers Thomas and Steve.
Allen was married to Ellen Marie Allen. The two were married on December 1, 1970.

I am so thankful to God that I had a chance to personally meet Bishop Allen here in Jackson, Tennessee several years ago. His music has helped me get through some very, very, trying times in my life. In June of 2019, I lost my mother. I signed a document for her to have a surgery. She barely made it through surgery, but died a few days later. I have been living with this pain every since. Bishop Rance Allen's live performance of the song, "You That I Trust" has helped me through this ordeal. I am not completely over the grieving process. I am seeing my doctors and a grieving counselor. However, I don't believe I would be here today if it hadn't been for this song ministering into my heart and soul. It is played religiously in my home on a daily basis. So I just wanted to share this with anyone that needs a touch from God. This man's music brought me closer to God. Thanks Bishop Allen for your music. May you rest in eternal peace now with your maker.

This hurts, this hurts badly...the legendary, the incomparable, the magnificent, the iconic Bishop Rance Allen was one of, if not the best and most gifted, male gospel VOCALIST alive during our time; only out-ranged, possibly, by the late Rev. James Moore. Only Moore or the late Daryl Coley could even come close to having the extreme vocal control and vast, explosive range that Rance so powerfully exhibited in song after song after song for over half a century all over the world. Rance didn't just "sing"...he didn't just "perform"...he MINISTERED, and millions around the entire world have been touched by the Hand of the Lord through his gifting. I've been a devout and devoted fan of his musical prowess and preaching ministry almost since the beginning of his long and fruitful globe-spanning career, which actually started during his boyhood and youth in the 1950s and 60s when he first became recognized, singing and preaching at church Conventions, Holy Convocations, Midnight Musicals and Gospel Talent Shows and Concerts, long before he recorded his first album.
He had a spectacular anointing, which ALWAYS blessed and lifted audiences everywhere regardless of the occasion, from command performances at the White House before Presidents to funerals to regular Sunday Morning Church services, and his skills and talent as a writer and lyricist were uniquely unmatched, placing him in the pantheon with other modern gospel geniuses such as Andrae Crouch, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark and Rev. When I read the news about his death yesterday, my scream almost made my friend jump out of his skin. I started bragging to my friend about how beautifully he sings and worships the Lord before realizing the headline. It really hurts. Mr. Rance Allen was, indeed, a blessing to our world. We love you, sir, and you will be greatly missed, but God loves you the most. So, rest in peace in the bosom of Our Almighty. My condolence to the family and loved ones.

I am 70 years old and my Mama played a record one Sunday before church..never ever stopped listening to Bishop Rance Allen from that day on..we are Catholic but loved this group..Mama is gone now.left me 3 yrs ago and I know she will find her way to his voice when he rests in peace with our Lord and Savior Jesus . Rance Allen...a genius interpreter of gospel. There will NEVER be another artist like him. His voice was an instrument...much like what we heard from other geniuses like Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and Al Jarreau. You CANNOT teach his approach to singing, because so much of his talent was instinctual and selfish. And I always heard the "voices of the ancestors" in his voice...the pain, the joy, the LIFE and the love of black people. When I heard he died, I cried.

That year was a really tough year for me, But God, brought me out with anointed singers like Rance Allen.
