What I couldn’t believe is that it was third try 5-4 skip too. If he hit that first try (which of course is hard in a marathon run) it could potentially have been WR in a very established game. I was in awe the whole time!

What the hell did I just watch?? I'm floored. His dedication to perfecting his run is incredible. The best run of this game I've ever watched by far.
Easily one of the highlights of AGDQ 2021. I would argue the most impressive run of the event.
This is one of the most impressive marathon runs I've ever seen, there were a few stretches where I thought I was watching a TAS.
The guy providing the commentary is way too chill, Calco2 isn't just knocking this run out of the park, he's laserblasting it into another universe!

They nailed the commentary for two clearly non native English speakers. We really reduce the skill on display in the community by requiring commentary in English, There are some fantastic non native speaking runners!

First time seeing 5-4 in a speedrun.
SNES platformers have always been my favorite runs at GDQ over the years. This run has to be one of the best in just raw platforming skill. No glitches to skip levels, no way to complete 100% at the quickest possible speeds without just being absurdly talented at the game.
I can't fathom being able to "bring it" to this run. It has to be one of the most demanding runs on every level.

Was just thinking about running yoshis island for the first time and I see this video in my notifications, a really awesome run, was a little hard to understand sometimes but it wasn't really a problem.
This was a trip back. So fun to watch
I was gonna go to bed half an hour after this run started, because I didn't expect it to be anything special. I ended up watching the whole thing and it was my favorite run of the event. Fantastic performance.

Re-watching this now and this was truly a fantastic run!
I think, on top of that, it highlights how great this particular GDQ event was. While we lost the in-person interactions, we gained so much quality! The fact that people who might not otherwise have the means to attend live (and thus participate in runs) means that the overall quality of the runs is much more solid. Not that they were ever "bad" frequently in the past - more that it's easier for top-tier runners to make an appearance
Plus, again without the in-person restriction, there is SO MUCH GOOD COMMENTARY because the runners could basically get whoever they wanted on board as long as they were available at that time frame! This means that a wider variety of commentators and other runners could participate in the social aspects while the runner can focus more on the run - and the people doing these aspects of it are more likely to be familiar with the game themselves.
Truly a great run, i feel for Calco2 being nervous their first time on the "GDQ stage" but we were truly blessed to have this run, and so many others like it
Not really a Yoshi's Island fan, but I started loving it back in the Trihex era, when he was #1, and since then and thanks to him, I lkve this game! For real one of the best speedruns from AGDQ 2021!

Weird comment, but.. I get panic attacks triggered by food, so I usually watch something interesting while eating. This incredible run really kept my attention and kept the panic at a minimum. The 4-4 boss was JAW DROPPING

I didn't think perfect flutters were frame perfect! I am a casual player of the game, and feel bad when it takes me more than two or three attempts to get one... I guess I shouldn't feel so bad about that. :P

What does making the eggs red do exactly? I see this done on all speedruns of Yoshi's Island.
Making them red doesn't do anything on itself, but (I think it was mentioned on this run) they have it as a backup because hitting enemies with red eggs gives you stars and if you get hit say during a boss fight that's the only way to recover stars
