    I picked up exercises like this a year or two back, and still use some of them as warm ups. They really helped me transition from making a series of small fuzzy lines to try and find the next line on the page to seeing it in my head before it's made.

    Something that helps me and might help others if your hands are shaky; exhale when you draw your lines. Professional photographers exhale when they take pictures, because that’s when your hands are the most steady, and I find the same applies to drawing line art

  • @ellieriggart

    I actually can't express how much line art frustrates and deflates my confidence. It gets to the point where it looks so bad that I avoid practicing it out of fear of failure (I suppose), which in turn means that I'm not working on the skill itself, so it essentially feels like a never-ending circle. My old teacher (about 6/7 years back, now) always used to criticise my line work and drawings in general- rather than being constructive criticism, she was rather hurtful about it, looking back at the things she said/ the way she went about saying them- and it really knocked me back, and even now whenever I'm drawing all I can hear are the things she said. The fact that line work goes hand in hand with other fundamentals, like proportion, scale and perspective etc, often puts more pressure on producing perfect lines. Drawing freely yet confidently is something that I want to be able to do, which I'm aiming to work on this year. Did you ever feel similar to this, and if so, do you have any advice on overcoming it? These exercises have given me a new outlook on different approaches of tackling this daunting skill, for me, and I like how they focus on the practical side of it (if that makes any sense haha). With the ellipses part, it's interesting to see just how powerful geometry is in creating perspective, and having tried it now the boxes really do help, like you suggested. Thanks for the tips, imma work on these exercises now...

      It's simply a personal psychological/emotional issue, in my opinion. So there is no universal advice. Every artist has their own struggle, because we're all just people. Art & Fear might be a good read. Other than that, you're most of the way to a solution already. You have identified the feelings and their source, and are working on overcoming your deficiency. Basically it's a process of seperating your art from your ego/sense of self.
      Hope this helps, keep it up!

    • @ellieriggart
      @ellieriggart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NightTimeDay I had forgotten about my comment here, thank you for replying! Yes, I agree with you there, it's definitely on the psychological/ emotional insecurity side. Is it "Art & Fear" by David Bayles and Ted Orland that you are referring to? Thank you for breaking that down for me, it's helped me see it in a new light- something I defo want to work on overcoming!
      All the best and thank you again :D

      If things like this are still bothering you, look up - get the life you want by richard bandler, he teaches fast and simple techniques for you to reverse those. Ive heard similar techs also in paul mckennas self hypnosis tapes.
      One way is making the negative voice sound like mickey mouse, making it ridiculous, not serious, and speeding it up or slowing it down, turning up or down volume knobs in your mind via imagination.
      Undo what you heard.
      And you can also benefit from creating your own cheering squad in your mind. Like imagining all the best artists throughout time, your heros, movie stars, whatever you want, admiring your work or giving you advice. (the advice tech is more from think and grow rich councilors)
      Its your mind, you have the power to decide what is playing in it!

    What I find useful about drawing ellipses is when you might have a column on a building. The curve is steeper at the edge and practicing ellipses helps me see this and draw the correct perspective.

    Nice video! Definitely looking forward to more advanced exercises.
    On a personal note, what I like to do is just grab public works from artists I like, turn the image into light blue tone, print it and go over it with a pen or g-pen. This comes at a downside of not being able to share it online, unless you want to get in trouble. But it is good practice basically. Just don't tell anyone you did it.
    Can also be done for digital lineart practicing too!

      I don't know if this will help you, but it helped me a lot with shaky hands. Have you ever heard how snipers describe how they use breath control to eliminate any extra movement that could throw the shot off? It is kind of like that. If I am needing a very straight line, I'll take a deep breath, try to relax my body, exhale about half way, then make the line. Rotating the paper I am drawing on helps a lot too, as there are certain angles that are less effected.
