Rolling in the Deep isn't really difficult, it's actually easy for many singers to imitate. The same with Listen by Beyonce. Chandelier is pretty difficult, though. All By Myself is really difficult. I Will Always Love you is difficult because no one is able to imitate Whitney Houston's vocal tone. The most difficult song for actual singers would probably be Mariah Carey's version of Oh Holy Night which is not on this list.

I'm a mezzo-soprano and it is easier for me to reach high and low notes because of being in the middle but I get surprised everytime I hear Mariah Carey because she can reach lower notes than me being a soprano and, at the same time, she reaches those highs, her vocal range is huge!!!
I think (but I could be wrong) she just drop her larynx to reach the lowest notes

Mariah Carey being #1 as she should! It’s not just that she masters the whistle register but it’s the fact that her range is so vast, her lows are so full and rich while her tone, transitions, agility and musicality are so utterly impeccable. That woman is an absolute wonder and she deserves a hell of a lot more recognition these days for the immense talent that she is. Also her catalogue could easily fill this entire list, hell it could fill a list of 100 most difficult songs.
@Zion Whitney has a power to her voice that is unique, and Celine has a clear almost laser sharp tone that sets her apart. Mariah on the other hand IS the more agile singer (or was), the effortless transitions and melismatic style is simply outstanding as well as the crazy range.

@@JD-xd4sy I have to say I'm really not much if a Celine fan. Early in her career wasn't too bad, but now I can't even listen to her. She doesn't sing songs, she gargles them. My teachers would strangle me if I tried to pull that. And it just sounds awful. A little throatiness can be nice for effect, and she did that in her early career. But she got lost in her own stylisations somewhere along the line. And it's all throat, all the time.
Circles by mariah is probably the hardest song to ever sing.

As a fan of Adele I don’t find many of her songs to be “difficult” to sing but she sings from such an honest place it’s hard to duplicate the emotions. Any song by Aretha,Mariah, Whitney, or Celine should just be out of the question. Honorable mentions are definitely Beyonce, Brandy, any Clark Sister (if we are going to other genres), Billie Holiday, and many Broadway singers. Of course Jennifer Holiday but also the woman who originally sang Memory from CATS…that song is vocal suicide.

I guess to me where Billie differs than Adele is that I’ve heard covers of Adele that are just as good but I haven’t heard many people capture the pain and sadness of Billie’s songs and that’s what makes her exceptional. ‘Strange Fruit’ is not an easy song to convey.

Of all of these, Minnie Riperton is my all-time favorite. She has so many songs that are so lush, deep, that got less acclaim than they deserved. Minnie's daughter, Maya Rudolph, is more of a comedienne or comedic actress. She has 4 children. Hopefully, somewhere in the gene pool, at least one of Minnie's descendants will have & use Minnie's vocal talent.
“And I’m Telling You” is way harder than “Don’t Rain On My Parade” especially because the song is for a powerful, soulful voice specifically.
I agree on that one. As a male, I managed to sing Don't Rain On My Parade succesfully. But And I'm Telling You is beyond. Not that I can't reach the notes but in the context of that song, it's really difficult.

I think we need to note that just because a song is in a high key doesn’t equate to it being difficult. For example people like Toni, Brandy, Anita, Ella Fitzgerald, and many other female vocalist who tend to stay in the “alto/tenor” are also very difficult. Mariah Carey who has exceptional range made a song called ‘Melt Away’ and the verses are incredibly low for a female. Certainly not easy to reach for those mid-to-low range kind of notes.
I always sing Toni Braxton songs an octave higher 😩 I cannot sing her low notes
I agree, my most comfortable singing range is my highest register, but it sounds rather operatic to me, so it's not my favorite place in my voice to sing. The alto stuff is much harder to pull off, but when it's firing on all cylinders, it's where the magic happens.

You forget that she was a teenager when most of her hits came out and she could sing them live perfectly when they were recorded. 25 years later, of course her voice is going to be different. Her voice has matured and weakened from use, as happens for most seasoned performers.
She's still better than Mariah. Mariah can't sing a lick now. She lipsyncs or just let's her back up singers do the work. Watch her on rockin nye or her carpool karaoke. Christina at least sings live

@@elizabethavalos2847 Singing with the power of sheer youth isn't good technique or set for longevity. Christina couldn't sing Stripped live properly and she was only 20. Mariah, Whitney, Celine, etc already had better technique than xtina as teens, so its moot to compare. Both mariah and Christina's voice has declined but they are great in other aspects now like low notes, agility, or tone. Christina's been good recently -maybe she got training and rest. I'm just amazed she can still sound like that with the years of growls and straining. Vocal chords of steel.

Actually, the most challenging part of Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" is the very first "and I....". I saw many people belted the last chorus quite nicely, but no one has done the first one right. It requires a lot more control than belting.
I agree, I always listen to hear how well they transition into that first, “and I…” to determine how well “I” think they did on the song.

One night only by Jennifer Hudson is another difficult one. She has a deep rich tone with a lot of power behind it in that song. You need to have a lot of power in your voice to do that song.

Not always. Emotions was never sang in the original key. A lot of the other songs like Can’t Let Go and Vision of Love were never performed like the studio version either
@@ojk46 She surpassed the studio version of Can't let go and also VOL in her prime. Can't let go SNL and Soul train are overall superior to the studio, more powerful and resonant, she also add some belts making the song harder. Arsenio hall Is "just" equal to the studio .
For Vision of love she has different arrangement during the years, Arsenio hall ( red dress) GMA and SNL are the best of 1990. SNL and Arsenio hall even better than studio, the vocals were pretty much the same but the melisma were superior and more intricate especially in the climax, at SNL even the whistle was better.
For Emotions, yes, she never sang the song in original key, but she went even higher in live adding staccato in whistle register and also legato in 93 with impossible runs, unfortunately she was sick in that tour.
Hero’s live utilized a higher high note climax.

It depends upon the type of voice you have (alto/soprano etc)and your level of skill/training as to who sings what well. Additionally if a song is written specifically for an individual it will be tailored to their specific abilities.
Thank you for including How Can I Ease the Pain by Lisa Fischer. Another good one is I Still Believe by Brenda K. Starr which Mariah Carey did a cover of. Lisa sung that song with such emotion. Although I agree with Mariah Carey’s Emotion, you need to listen to the Best Of My Love by the Emotions, the song for which her song was based. The group The Emotions had beautiful harmonies and lush high notes.

@@jamarimoss867 though I love Naya’s voice and enjoy hearing her sing the song, it’s just not the same. I’ve always felt like there was something missing, but that in no way takes away from her talent. Idina Menzel didn’t even deliver song up to where Streisand set the bar. Lea is the only one that I’ve heard that even comes close.
Listen is a beautiful song I think it took more chops to hit some of the covers in Cadillac Records of Etta James in one song particularly the character when she hit the note of Muddy Waters showed it best shockingly surpassed what was expected

What makes Whitney Houston & Celine Dion so hard is trying to match the POWER and BREATH SUPPORT they bring. Mariah is hard because of range, constant transitions & agility.
Dont forget than Whitney and Celine had an ease on transitioning chest to head.
Whitney and Celine are also agile and they both got a pretty good range
Power and Breath Support are also Mariah's requirements to be able to sing her songs.

Mariah Carey's Butterfly and Forever is impossible to sing. But in turns out no one ever sing it like what Mariah did.

Great list! Loved seeing Kate Bush on the list. Would have loved to have seen Florence Welch from Florence + the Machine on this list! "Howl", "No Light, No Light" and "Ship to Wreck" are all tough songs. Also, Heart's "Alone" should have been an honorable mention.
I always think of Only For A Night by Florence, that hiiiiigh chorus :'( And Girl With One Eye (not just because of the range, but also the grit and attitude you need to sing it)
