"Forget the Jedi, I wanna be an X Wing Pilot or a Rebel Commando." the kids the world kinda ignores. everyone wants the Jedi, the gifted hero ready to save the world. But sometimes kids see the hard working soldier and realize, "That's me. That's gonna be me. I have no powers, I have no lightsaber. Just me and my comrades against the Empire"

This is what all star wars movies should strive for. It recreates the original trilogy aesthetic and blows it up into epic proportions using new technology. The space battles in 7 and 8 can't even hold a candle to this.

Rogue One really showed the scale of ships to planets that no other star wars has really emphasized on, or could due to technological limits. The view of the Death Star from a on the surface of the planet perspective, the ships coming in and out of hyperspace, star destroyers hovering over planets, and the death star being constructed with a view of all the other star destroyers, or even the space battles themselves. And that's just one of the really awesome things about Rogue One. It really is underrated, and one of my favorite Star Wars movies. Sorry, I'm high lol

This is four years late, but the video is making the rounds again so I'll throw this out there.
This is actually how fighters/interceptors, at least from WW2 which heavily influenced Star Wars space combat, maneuver so they can make quick cuts and drop from high altitudes to make runs on targets beneath them. You basically just hit the brakes and angle the rudders so turn in one direction or another and let gravity do the rest. The most common formation is called "Escalon Right or Left" and it varies depending on which side the flight leader is on (the planes formation looks like / or like \)
I'll link a timestamp to the intro of the old tv show "Baa Baa Blacksheep" which shows this maneuver very well. They drop off to the left side in it, but it's the same basic principle.

There’s something in that beginning scene that honestly make me cry, all of these pilots, knowing they could be flying to their death, rushing into the cockpits of their X-Wings and the distant sound of “May the force be with you” being said over the P.A., a sentence to have hope even if you’re some simple cargo pilot that joined the resistance and now is going up against a massive military force trained to eliminate you in every way possible, and yet these people, even while fictional, are still rushing to fight and while yes the entire universe is fictional, it brings tears to my eye to see humanity, raw humanity

After watching the ST, I realized that Rogue One is the Star Wars movie I needed as an adult who grew up on Star Wars media. It was set in the same universe and timeline, but didn't rehash the plot and gave deeper meaning to the struggle of the grunts of the Rebel Alliance, the actual people dying in droves fighting a superior force while the heroes gallivanted on their fantastic journey. I felt more emotionally engaged in the struggle that was the second half of RO than in any of the ST films.

One of my favorite shots of the entire movie: Blue leader with that big grin on his face after blowing up the AT-AT.
If you look at the behind the scenes footage from the movie, You see the actor who portrays Blue leader, a renowned British theater actor named Ben Daniels, looking like a little kid on a carnival ride in the X-Wing set. He just looks so excited to be there! I would be too!
When I first found out that Ben Daniels was supposed to be in the new Star Wars movie, I spent the movie acting like it's "Where's Waldo?", Trying to spot him and I was so excited when I did.
One of the things I also love about this movie is how it shows non-main characters, such as pilots and commanders, doing really badass things. Flying their fighters, crashing a cruiser into the star destroyer, etc.

As this video makes the rounds again, I think one of my favorite things about this whole sequence is at 0:33. The Empire is completely caught off guard by the fact that the Rebellion has the balls to attack a shielded planet, to the point where someone has to point out “sir, those are *rebel* ships,” followed by the panic of the officer telling someone to get ahold of the admiral. The Rebellion is on their doorstep with a fleet and a plan, and the Empire doesn’t even know how to react to the fact that if the alliance is attacking a *shielded planet* where archives are kept, they aren’t messing around.

This is from wookiepedia (a star wars version of wikipedia):Sometime after joining the Rebel Alliance, Merrick was given the rank of General and direct authority over all assembled starfighters at the Base One on Yavin 4. He also would fly in command of Blue Squadron as Blue Leader. When the entirety of the Massassi starfighter squadrons were scrambled, Merrick had authority over the other squadron leaders. In Merrick's absence, General Dodonna commanded the starfighter fleet. Additionally, he served on the rebel council allowing him to have sway over the course of the Rebellion.[1]

I love how the Red 5 before Luke (Pedrin Gaul, according to Wookiepedia) was so obviously inexperienced, freaking out when he was separated from his Squadron, and letting himself be driven further away. The TIE pilots could obviously tell, too; The second he slipped out of formation, they were like sharks smelling blood in the water.
It's really hard to put aside the nostalgia I have for the Battle of Endor, but once I do, it's really hard to argue that the Battle of Scarif isn't the best on-screen space battle in the franchise. It's a near thing, it really is, but Scarif is like all the best parts of Hoth and Endor combined and executed with modern technology. It's fantastic.

IRL, staying in formation during dogfight are a bad idea.
Red5's tactic actually resemble IRL Thach Wave. The aerial combat tactic adopted by US Navy F4wildcat during WW2, that succesfully defeat a much more nimble japanese Zero fighter.
He perfectly pulled the first stage of the tactic, even made the entire wing of Tie Fighters to follow him (in a respectful distance w/ his leader main wing). What should do next, is for the 2nd wing of the Xwing's (in this case, Red Leader Wing) to immediately get into attack position, then wipe the entire wing of those chasing Tie Fighters in the intersecting flight path. Tbh in my opinion, its the red leader who's lack in experience for this kind of furball dogfight. The only mistake Red5 did, was he should coordinated his tactic w/ his wing leader (unless if his wing leader have exceptionally high situation awareness& experiences)

It was so un-Luke! The casino scene was pointless, that Rose character was THE MOST pointless, no explanation as to how the lightsaber came back, no explanation into the creation of Snoke (who was killed of anti-climatically, just as Luke was). Everything The Force Awakens set up as a powerful plotpoint was abandoned, and there was so much potential. Right at the beginning that powerful scene at the end of TFA was treated as a joke. As a fan for 40 years, how can you not be in the least bit underwhelmed?

This was the grandson of the greatest evil the galaxy had seen - Luke admitted his failure and it caused him to go into extreme self-exile. And seeing Luke at the end with the most incredible force projection ever seen from the most powerful Jedi Master in the Galaxy was just amazing to me. Admit that Rose was underwhelming. I don't think that Luke tossing the saber was a joke. And there is no way I agree with the death of Luke being anti-climatic. No way. I loved the movie. I'm out.

As excited as I was when Blue Squadron made it through the shields, a part of me remembered that only Red & Gold Squadron was in Ep 4, and got emotional when I realized that this would be their suicide mission

1:36 Look at that motherf*cker GOOO!
The one X-Wing pilot in the Battle of Endor could've learned a thing or two from him...

Nobody Important oh right, that pilot.
Can we really judge his piloting skills since we don’t know what exactly lead to his ship blowing up after he helped destroy that Star Destroyer’s shield generator.

Those over the shoulder shots of the Xwings took me back to the Rebel Assault 2 days. Too good

Really loving Rogue One showing how much the grunts suffered facing Imps on certain death. Every rebel grunts are important.
Best example being the Rebel marines passing the DS schematics to his comrade when he knew the door is stuck and he is facing death. All he wants is the hope to be passed on at that point.

Takes out the star destroyers shield generator, barrel rolls three times, and then rolls a 4th time, therefor disabling the Star destroyer while evading 3 TIEs, directly leading to the victory of the battle of scarif.

Best Disney Star Wars flick and my 3rd fave Star Wars movie after Empire Strikes Back and Revenge Of The Sith. My fourth favorite movie? Rise Of Skywalker

Well, the X-wing is the ARC-170's descendant.

It is the ARC-170s that sound like X-Wings.
