    People must also realize that Jay Dee has daughters. His mother is charged with their well-being. I've seen many artists come and go with very little legacy, and even less money to leave for their children. Ma Dukes, Pay Jay , and a few other organizations have gracefully found ways to not only praise and pay homage to the one-of-a-kind contribution that James gave to music, but they've also done so in a way that could bring about sustainability. There is community in Detroit in which you can tell Jay Dee (J.Dilla's) energy flows throughout. And those who knew him best, treat that energy with respect and grace. I'm not from Detroit, but was introduced to his music via Tribe/Pharcyde, then the Fantastic. I went to Dilla Day back in 2015. It was a great experience to see all the people coming together to put on this event, yearly. House Shoes, Illa J, Guilty Simpson, Jay Rock, Ma Dukes (obviously) and many more gather to maintain his legacy. The event is positive and packed with talent. De La Soul, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Phife Diggy (May he RIP). These musical releases, these events, the Dilla Foundation, the sample packs. These are ways to provide for his family. And it has been done very respectfully. Just because you feel some type of way, in your mind about who Dilla was, does not mean that his loved ones (especially his children) can't / shouldn't benefit and be compensated. The wealthy leave behind monetary legacies, for their children, all the time. Throughout, modern history, though. Black musicians, entertainers, etc. were mostly exploited and their widows/widowers, or children left with nothing when they've passed. They Yancey's have had an opportunity to buck that trend, and do so in a way that elevates his legacy. I'm all for it.

    As a teen, I was in Keys's basement when bodyrok dropped and he was showing me and my boy Jason how to sample. At some point his mom opens the door and yells that his videos on TV and he just nonchalantly says "I know Ma" and gets back to sampling.Lol☺

    Samples have a soul with them. They’re not just sounds. They carry the energy of the musicians who made that sound. It’s deeper than many people think. Dilla was not just snatching and flipping samples, he connected with the energy of those records and this is a big part of his secret formula that secret is not. Energy! He was not an alien, he was a real human. And if you want to catch it, you need to work on yourself! “DO YOU” is not only about music, it’s a life mission on soul searching. Using samples from
    somebody else’s sampler means disconnecting with that hard part of working on yourself. Do it if you want to learn, but don’t get lazy and stupid thinking that this shit has shortcuts. Don’t leave this life with such a regret in your heart.

    Big Dilla and Slum Village fan here. Disappointed by this sample pack, the high price tag, low number of samples, and the tonal sounds were not tuned properly. Feeling like I basically paid $60 for a drum pack with no cymbals/toms and very few percussion sounds. These types of lo-fi / old school hip hop drum kits exists all over the internet for free. Sorry to be a hater, but I say spend your money elsewhere. In the true spirit of Dilla, if you really want the exact drum samples as heard on the Slum Village album, grab your sampler and just take that sh**!

    This just...doesn't feel right. I'm sure dilla's mom wants the material out for everyone to hear and use but....maybe as a free thing or something not heavily marketed as a sample pack, she seems to be going along with it but not highly enthusiastic. It must hurt to have your dead son's name still be monetized long after his passing.

    • @ironMICkane
      @ironMICkane 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      maybe shes just idk...kinda sad b/c her SON passed away. Its gotta be surreal to hear those chops knowing he did it. Its like finding a letter with someones handwriting after they died. Why not heavily market it?? Why not push the name Dilla as far as it can go, so people everywhere can know and appreciate a legends work??
