Derrick May has always been an amazing DJ. I worked with him at Transmat for two years in my early 20s. He had his ego moments, but always treated me with respect. I did the mix down of Innovator in his studio alone with him. He has always been a respectful man to me.

19. is not Ben Sims but Christian Smith & John Selway "Nation". This track was caned by Jeff Mills, Laurant Garnier and Derrick May and famously samples the Chicago classis "House Nation". My favourite Smith & Selway track. Derrick May still plays it once in a while.
21. is also from one of those varous EP's on Dark House Music. Most likely the A2 on this: www.discogs.com/Various-Trackhead-Series-Volume-5/release/25890 Sold the record 10 years ago, so someone might double check this.
30. Also had this in my collection but sold it years ago. It was a 2 tracker on a UK label if I recall correctly. The labels looked pretty black with a little bit of white and yellow letters I think. The artist name started with a Q... Ooooh what was it!!? Oh, and it's an unknown record! :p
Somewhere, there must exist a better quality film of this. May in his heyday was something to behold. Here, the decks are too low and it seems he's dealing with a few vibration/skipping issues. Like the true professional he tears it up despite that. Awesome...
it was originally archived in Real Media on that old site, Groovetech.com. I don't know if they recorded to lossless as well as direct to stream, but if not then yeah... the technology was SUPER compressed and this is how i remember it always looking.
un puto amo un puto genio un maestro don derryck may no hay palabras para describir su musica es muy especial para mi desde 2004 de los 5 mejores djs del mundo sin duda
I really like this kind of sets (unfortunately not many are out there), DJed with style, with some beginning, climax, the end. Nowdays everything has to be quick, now, why it is not already... wtf.
I would say that a dj that does not respect this kind of sequence is NOT A DJ ! Fortunately there are still the good old school dj's like Derrick May, Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Dj Bone and what else ? Those are the ones who never changed during years by keeping loyal to good music and to the origins of (Detroit) Techno
I cried when I first heard the end of this mix with "Silvery Sounds" by Sound of K (1:49:48). Dance music is universal...it is the sound of unity. What a set.
@@Rob_Sausage well when you're 20 years old and your whole life is Detroit Techno and you couldn't go to the DEMF. Watching it on a tiny window with early internet video technology.
me too had weekend off...just so happened to be cruising around downtown...heard this loud commotion going on at Hart Plaza on a holiday Saturday....I was like wtf... decided to do sum investigating....life was never the same 😊😊😊😊😊
24 years later and this is still a master class. Talent like this doesn’t age, in fact, in a era where there seem to be so many arm waving sync button pressing ‘DJs’, this reminds us what a proper DJ at the top of his game can do.
DEMF 2000 videos were online probably mid 2000's and you could watch each set. I think Paxahau site hosted them but I'm not positive on that one. I wonder why a DVD box set of this historical weekend isn't available for purchase. Like all good things that came to an end in Detroit... probably the victim of a lawsuit or something.
Good eye! May spun the penultimate set of the festival, and Richie Hawtin followed him and closed it. Hawtin was perhaps concerned about the equipment or monitoring?
Kevin Hammond google demf oral history resident advisor. It’s a really really good read. Rich didn’t take being handed that time slot lightly. He kinda felt he was going to get a lot of backlash for closing it down over a true Detroit dj.
i was there. For the first three years. The 3rd was so sad. They had all the last system and dubtech parties. Remember the after party spot Cybertron???
Absolutely epic. I went to see him at Glasgow School of Art in October that year and it is still one of the best performances I have seen. Used a similar intro as well although he went into Batucada por Favor then X-Press 2's AC/DC. Scenes. There wouldn't happen to be a high quality audio version of this kicking about somewhere? I worked at Sonic Groove for Adam for a few years. Sure we could trade stories. Highs and lows
I was a big fan of him until he obsessively trying to hook up with my gf back then. Musically, he is a legend. As a person, No.

Love to watch him flick thru the vinyl and completely own the stage. A true Beast😈way ahead of the curve. Such talent and devotion to music. 🎶🎼🎸✨💛✨
