This Car Shouldn't Have Worked. How did it Beat Everyone?

- Mercedes in the 1980s had a pretty good idea of what their cars should be. Well built, dependable, comfortable cars presented as a convertible, saloon, estate or maybe even a coupe if you’re feeling adventurous. They weren’t boring exactly, but not many people had their pants set alight by the W126 S-class, despite its excellence. And oh yeah, they also made this… This is the story of the Mercedes 190E 2.5 16 Evo 2.

If this video feels familiar, its not deja vu. Just over a year ago I published a video about this car, however the information in it was fundamentally flawed, and it has since been unlisted (it can be found here: • Mercedes 190E Evo II (... ). This video uses parts of the original script, but large sections have been re-written to fix inaccuracies and better tell the story of this legendary machine.

Thanks for your hard work on these. Some of the best auto content out right now. 💪💪💪
You could have left it in its flawed state. The fact that you didn't speaks for your integrity though.🤟
Loved the previous version, appreciate the chance to watch it again! A truly pant-tightening car. 🤤
Thought you were going to talk about the Albon video when I started reading this comment
Thanks, soon as I read the title wondered..
But trust the channel and came to watch anyways.
According to James May, Martin Brundle said it was the finest rear drive chassis he'd ever driven.
I can't look at the car anymore without thinking of James May and the phone call that followed 😂
@@cammyboy011 iconic May moment... although Top Gear tragics will know, it was actually Hammond who made the claim first, during his "future classics" segment in the first season.
Which Martin then flaty denied ever saying😂.
Given the rear drive endurance racers Brindle drove, I strongly doubt this quote.
@@EmyrDerfel Yeah that's the running gag, actually stemming from when Hammond made the claim some 12 years earlier and Brundle apparently took issue with being misquoted.
i had a chance to buy a crashed 1992 mercedes amg 560 sec amg hammer, for like 5k, easy damage repair too. this was 1999 when i was looking for my first car. i wanted it so bad, but my dad convinced me not to buy it. i been salty ever since.
Probably a good idea your dad had, i cant even Imagine what would it take for anyone to restore such a car, its from the best era of mercedes and rebuilding it to the same spec would be nuts, esepcially as a first "car", more like a big money pit and a long term project, sourcing the original parts would be really hard
I'm salty about it too. That's such an awesome car
@@eustahijelifetips bro, even had he left it to rot on some field, he could still sell that cars carcass for more than those measly 5k he would have paid for it then.
@@AI-qd4vb i really doubt it, it would be worth the same as it was and how it coulve been
You’d have it road worthy by this year earliest if you would have bought it then😂
Friend had a U.S. spec 190E. Car was a little tank. Had half a bajillion miles on it and still ran good. He spent a few bucks on a wiper motor, only real work beyond basic maintenance it ever really needed. I imagine it would be alive today had it not been hit by a dump truck.
🥲
the 190e was a car you would thin isn't that insane but was just crazy, always love seeing it in games and vids
what a lot of people miss about these is that even if you get a non AMG or Evo version, these are just great cars. You get 5 seats, fuel injection and thus good mileage, excellent vision all around and seats so comfy they rival box spring couches on a car that weighs 1.25 tons empty - and the real party piece is that they can turn on a dime and afaik all have the same suspension parts as the Evos, just different shocks and sway bars.
If you're looking for a practical, affordable limousine that will outlast you, this is it. The only thing better is an estate/station wagon. Sadly, Mercedes stopped making a lot of parts for these, but there are plenty of used parts available.
Fabulous video about a fabulous car. I especially appreciate all the old race footage. Liveries back then were just beautiful.
I realized as I was watching this that in my hot wheels display, I have a Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti, the 1994 Mercedes dtm car that replaced the 190e, and a sierra cosworth. now I really have to find a 190e to go with them
I love all the Bathurst footage sprinkled in
What is this madness ?! You're not yet at 100k subs !? 😮
The best, high quality, entertaining, mostly accurate, historical racing channel on TH-cam... life is unfair. 😢
I miss the sound of old 16v 4 bangers. The sound of the Cosworth 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 is probably one of my favorite ever.
It just sounds angry and fast.
I miss people knowing that 16v is said out loud as 'sixteen valve', not 'sixteen vee'. Pronouniciations on this channel make me feel like such a grumpy old man, but they honestly drive me crazy haha
@@mattteee2973 doesn't bother me much. I'm French, and we have 16s here, with the "s" being "soupapes", and literally nobody actually says the whole word, so I'm accustomed to the abbreviation.
@@ora2j251 maybe its only english where it sounds jarring. Its become quite common for odd pronounciations in these days of social media, maybe because people read these terms long before they hear anyone speak them? such as-
2.0= always 2 litre, its not software
mk1= mark 1, not 'emm kay 1'
8v, 16v etc= 8 valve, 16 valve
Yeah, I'm definitely ranting now haha
@@ora2j251 16s..... i ever wanted a Citroen BX 19 Gti 16soupapes, only had a white 1989 19 Gti with leader and new engine i build myself, was an engine out of an BX 19 Gti 4x4 with aluminium oilpan which was fine but i wanted to rebuild it completly! The engine was very healthy, never tested really but it had more than its stated 120hp! Loved it but unfortunaly i totaled it! that was around 20 years ago. Now i have a 2019 Peugeot 308 Gti by Peugeot Sport...... Holly fast Baguette batman!!! 🤣🤣
I bought my 1987 190E 2.3-16v Cosworth Evo 2 clone for $5,000 in 2006. I still own it and love it to this day. It's even my TH-cam profile photo.
I remember this car from Gran Turismo 4. That rear wing was ridiculous and stood out. Used it a lot.
"Despite not seeing the level of success that might be typical of a car that achieves legendary status..."
It was racing against other legends of the time and was more than capable of holding it's own against them. "Lack of success" was simply due to having to face a few other legendary cars and only one car can win each race. When you can go toe to toe with other legends you are a legend yourself because you are their equal. Level of success is no longer relevant in such instances.
I agree to an extent. My point was more that "legendary" is an emotional assessment, not an objective one. And the 190e had less success than other cars widely considered to be "legends". None of that is to say the car wasn't successful though, it was!
7 or so years ago I needed a car for when my friends and family came in from out of town. Was just looking for something big to haul 5 people and stuff and happened across an '88 420 SEL. Possibly the best riding car I've ever owned. Still super quiet inside and seats that just cradled you as you rode. Nuked the transmission trying to use it as a tractor. It didn't like that at all and sold it. Now you got me wanting another W126 lol great video
My god this man's videos REALLY hit the spot.
Between this guy and roflwaffle I can play one of their videos without purring gran turismo on
You are one of the most if not the most underrated car channel, I love your videos they are great huge love from Turkey 🇹🇷
Had the pleasure of going to school in a 190E for a year not sure what variant model it was definitely wasn't a Cosworth or Evo2 but loved the wooden interior it had and the single wiper.
A black street legal version is possibly the most menacing car ever made.
U forgot the miata 😂
'Why i should't bmw: 190E evolution II is it' let me say automobilistic that i somehow feel regretful not knowing this merc a lot sooner has been corrected dude as now any chances to have one irl are imposible but at least can dream about it 😅😅😅 anyway thanks for this video and have a nice weakend bye now. P.S Hey automobilistic i have request to add is ford mustang in gt racing during late 90s for future video and ohhh my lord that crash at 9:45 mark is really scary to watch i hope the racers are ok.
Back then when Mercedes was known for quality. I miss those times.
I remember this mercedes from Gran Turismo 4, there was some one lap licence on Nurburgring.
It was one of the "coolest to drive" car in game.
Friend of mine fixed up an older 190E 2.3-16v Cosworth. By far the scariest and most baffling cars I've ever been in. It's an underrated monster.
Love the channel. Awesome work! I was lucky enough to have seen a road going EVO 2 parked on a busy street in downtown Toronto about 15 years ago. Of all places, I had never throught I would come across one out in the wild.
Glad to see David Byrne never aged after the 80's and super glad he found a channel for his motorsport passion! Same as it ever was...
I fell in love with the beautiful highway, you see
My dad owned to 190 evo1 back in the 80's. I picked it out at the dealerships and my dad was impressed by my taste😂. I loved this carvas a kid.
Great video.
Fyi, "Diepholz" is pronounced more like "deep holz", the ph is not a stand in for an f there, it's the end of one syllable and the start of another, but that's hardly something you could've known, especially considering that this track isn't exactly the most well known
Edit: Also it's Hans-Joachim Stuck, Hans Stuck is his father who was also a successful racing driver especially known for being good at hillclimbs (so much so that he got called "Bergkönig", "King of the Mountain"). Admittedly this is a mix up that happens often to English speakers (e.g. English DTM commentary) but it's worth pointing out
It’s a little odd watching footage of the 190E at Bathurst while its success in Europe is being discussed. Driven it in a few games but never found it noteworthy but that’s probably because I unlocked it after gaining access to much faster and better handling ones.
Great stuff! Keep pumping these videos out, man. You are a pro.
Saw them live at the Norisring(germany) as a child and they still compete in classic recing series like the tourenwagen classics/legenden.
I've enjoyed using a vintage TLR recently as it limited the options I had to worry about. Have been enjoying the Pentax 17 for similar 'back-to-basics' reasons 😊
👏👏👏Masterfully executed and i watch A TON of auto docs but _this_ ... this i didnt want to end! I understand the amount of time and work thats necessary to produce something of this caliber and for that i appreciate you.
Thank You Much

Excellent video.
I was 15 when the 190E Evo 2 was released. I have so much literature on that car it's rediculous. Local dealership here in Australia helped find some pretty rare stuff. Model cars aswell.
The froth from me was palpable at the time. Still is when I see that 190E anywhere in videos. Never seen one in the flesh, though there is one in Melbourne on display.
I've always had pretty fast cars as an adult, my current cars are a Mitsubishi Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinen Edition which I bought brand new in 2002, more of a garage queen. My daily is a Manual, Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 which is tuned to just under 400hp. Both wonderful and capable cars.
I would give both of those away plus my soul for an original low mileage 190E Evo 2 road car despite knowing either of my current cars would smack the butt off the 190E. Easily. It's not the monetary value either....
That is the car I have had on the very top of my list for decades. Keep your Ferrari and Lamborghini offers away.. not interested... it's the Evo 2 I would dearly love to have in my garage.
In the TH-cam podcast "Alte Schule, Folge 184 mit Klaus Ludwig Teil 2/3 " @01:28:00 Ludwig explained that the team of GRAB worked against him and tries to cheat on him with special tire management. Also the restrictions went up to crazy and the air intake was reduced to 28mm diameter. Ludwig was so angry about the performance loss which results in under 300hp. That was the most difficult and saddest Year in his career. He finished 7th at Hockenheim (last race) and won the championship. The fact that in this race 4 other drivers could become the championship winner shows how broken the rules wore back then. Ludwig calles H.W Aufrecht for a job at AMG and Aufrecht accepted
Thank you for your videos
Im a great fan of this chanel
What an era for cars all over the world. Truly incredible
I am looking forward to the video where you will talk about Nannini in Singen 😂. That is another story worth a video
For me the Mercedes 190E Evolution 2 is the racing legend car in the only two reason why i love the 190e evolution 2 first the 190e engine was powered tune by cosworth is very known for engineering in F1 and rallying also in touring car racing. And second the Mercedes 190E Evolution 2 win the DTM championship in 1992 and also the 190E evo 2 was the rival of the BMW E30 M3.
You’re absolutely right, I have no love for Mercedes at all but something about the 190E is just cool
I remeber in 2006 I was buying a diecast and I found that car
how much?
74
sold!
that look is timeless
What made this successful was partly down to Mercedes developing the car, but the forcing out of the RS500 Cosworth was the biggest factor. Nothing could hold a candle to that monster it had a huge horsepower advantage.
My mechanic owns one. It still looks great (he probably vakuum seals and parks it on a carpet, between track days). Most Mercedes are pimp cars, this one is for drivers
I've always had a soft spot for the Karcher sponsored 65 from 1990.
190 has quite a legacy if you also think about the Nürburgring Champions’ Cup
The 126 AMG twin turboV8 coupe was hardly a Grandma car !!! Mercedes and AMG were building many variants at the time...i was working at M.B.as an auto technician at the time !!
I´m friends with a former engineer of Mecedes Benz. He´s still building his own cars and modifies engines in his garage although he sits in a wheel chair.
Group A required 5000 units, and later 2500 for homologation, the not 500.
Car makers back then to their engineers: "How can we make the best cars?"
Car makers now to their marketing teams: "How can we make the people think, that we make the best cars?"
You prononced dtm perfectly.
Well done, this is a fabulous short documentary! Just one little remark on pronounciation: Diepholz - to make it sound correct - should be pronounced like an English approach to "Deep-Holtz" (not "Dee-false").
As much of a monster and fantastic machine the 190e evo 2 is, it was more AMG and Cosworth than it was a Mercedes and it was an answer to and liberally borrowed from the winningest DTM car ever, the BMW E30 M3.
They only came winning because Merc and BMW were crying in the ears of officials like little girls that they should slow down the Sierra. Ridicoulously small air restrictors and many kgs of additional weight slowed the Sierra down and tires popped in a row because of the weight.
The EVO2 road car was also quite gutless.
Always a fantastic video!
Anyone else see older cars like this & think, "Hmm, wonder what that goes for?" Then you look it up & see they cost a cool quarter Mil? 🤣
That'd be around a $4 billion development cost today!! Wow!!!
Is it just deja vu messing with me or is it a reupload?
pinned comment explains :)
You will watch it again and you will like it.
I think to this day that the 190 is still the best car. I own one and would never trade it for any other car
I love shit like this! I’m a car addict freak and I love indulging in videos like this….especially 80s and 90s cars biographies/documentaries on how they were made, the more detailed the better and the longer the better as long as it’s well written aka really fun to watch! And I like watching videos from all kinds of cars, econo cars, mainstream but important cars, muscle/sport cars import or domestic, luxury cars, super luxury cars, super cars, exotic cars, and cars too expensive and too rare for my poor fingers….but not for my eyes! But the best and most fun and interesting car videos tend to be from relatively normal and affordable know classics like this Benz here….
DTM cars were not closely related to the original cars, tubular frames all over the place, they were bolides with a plastic skin made to look like the original car. Just look at Alfa 155, so limited as a road car with its Tipo platform but it wiped the floor with everyone in 1993. The same way this 190 was so bad as a road sports car but still able to win races.
The 155 was built for the Class 1 rules introduced in 1993. Class 1 cars and beyond were not very closely related to the road cars as you said, but pre 1993, in the Group A era, the relationship was much closer. Group A cars did not use space frames or plastic bodies.
2:21 your german pronunciation is very good 😊
More Group A race cars videos please
If you haven't yet, could you make a video about the Porsche 959
Miss that dtm era especially the more leeway regulation at that time
Helmut Marko? Yeah, I've heard of him once or twice. I wonder what he's doing these days?
Despite multiple complications and her near-death experience
the best thing is my grandpa helped to design the evo 1-3
For when you're running very late to the board meeting.
Adversity isn't set against you to fail; adversity is a way to build your character so that you can succeed over and over again through perseverance.
I don't think they deserved the 1992 championship. The flat-plane crankshaft of Audi was "illegal" because BMW and Mercedes Benz were behind the curve in development. Instead of admitting that they need to do more homework, they lobbied Audi out of the competition. No different than banning turbos to get rid of Ford earlier.
Thing is with all these series: You need to create a clear set of rules that allows for innovation. If someone comes along and leapfrogs everyone, be it AWD, turbo, or a better engine design, let them dominate the season. If you think that it becomes dangerous due to increase of power, well, come up with rules that limit displacement size and/or intake airflow - and don't have it come into effect in the middle of a season. Even extra penalty weights or tank limits for different designs or drive train configurations is just a lazy way to stifle competition.
The 16v commercial footage you used was designed and produced by my brother
At 9:40 that crash the Mercedes had with the Sierra looked like the Merc came off second best, which is strange. The passenger cell of the Mercedes looked completely collapsed, whilst the Sierra doesn’t look that bad. Could anyone explain this? or does anyone have the full clip perhaps with a different angle?
Now I need to ponder my existence and ask myself if I'm truly real
What type of vehicle was this Gentleman driving during the period in question?
190 bEast. Vs the Beemer. Here I come M3 DTM story video.
I know a guy who has 4 190e's sitting in a workshop
Been there for many years as the parts are so rare they cant be fixed
I was told that the one which is a
190 E AMG 3.2 that was supposedly was raced in germany for the an endurance race at nurburgring (probably the 24 hour ) by a friend of mine Tony Martin then it was shipped to south africa where its sat since
Its got the legendary sonax livery on it and its racing number is 11
Ive tried to search for history of the car but ive found nothing
Anybody have any ideas for how to find out if it ever actually raced and is a German car ?
How to make a box look good, The Mercedes way:
For a second i thought it was a w140 and was thinking a very dark joke
Wasn't group A rules 5000 production road cars with 10% held back for evolution version?
The original FIA group A rules, yes. But most chanpionships that employed Group A modified them over time (i.e. banning turbos, reducing production numbers etc)
I say it again and again: Bring back Group A!
Always my go to when playing Gran Turismo, such a beast of a car
Kewl room 👌🏻
Huh so my old 2.5 liter wagon car was faster than a 190E 2.3, as I watched the motorweek video on it, 14 second quarter mile, about 3 or 4 more than a muscle car from the 60's, and its 0 to 60 was 8.9 seconds
and mine was definitely faster than 8.8 as they said in the paperwork, and when I switched to 89 it took a second off the acceleration, still, not bad for a car from 1983, when mine was from 2010 lol
although I must have had something really good under the hood, as when they switched the wagon line to the 4 bangers, they took my cars motor, and put it in the RS3, and I do miss that sound, mind you the 1.8 aint no slouch neither
but that just gives you an idea of how things have changed, also a 100 feet from 55 mph was the test they used for the brakes
which if you ever wondered why brakes sucked back then, that's why as their was no reason to actually have them properly rigged up for highway speed back then
a funny side effect of the carter era, which they never ever bring up and why cars stagnated so badly in the 80's
as they had no reason to make them better, while in europe with rally and touring car championships, they did
also mercedes did rather make something special in the old days before this, using a fuel injection system off of something my Uncle Flew in the war over stutguart
the 6.3, and they did race those too, granted you cant beat the look of the thing, same thing with the E30 of this era, and its a real shame the old quattro never got put in this racing series
as imagine audi quattro, BMW M30, and this racing against a cosworth,
which is probably what did in DTM with the rule change to go away from that, as if you cant buy the cars, then what's the point of looking at that
and to think they flat out screwed over the siera cosworth too, which with how well loved that machine is, is exceptionally stupid to do
like people in england and across the world loved that little monster, and rightfully so, it was like the mini cooper S of its day, fast, cheap and fun to drive, a true national treasure, and you can be damn sure the brits tuned out as soon as that went out
and to think some of those motors were even put in caterham 7's too, and the people who had them loved them dearly
and I wonder if that guy ever got his back, as someone had theirs jacked that was targeted BECAUSE it had that motor in it
Does anybody know where he gets his posters from?
Iirc he just launched an online store like 3 months ago. The posters are available for sale there.

YOU JUST GOT IA-15'D
current GT4 and GT3 mercedes look bonkers to me
the 190E is so damn good in Assetto Corsa, but you need an engine sound mod fpr it, otherwise it will sound shite
It basically has pretty privilege legendary status
German Engineering at its best.
Sounds a lot like they paid for the championship.
would you have prefered nascar where every car was built and looked the same, it was just the engine builders and the race teams differed, as the best way to develop a car, is to run it on a race track, as then you know what it can do
how fast it can go, and how good the chasis is under duress, its like the ultimate stress test, and also they HAD to get involved just given the holomigation rules just like everyone else
One of the secrets of the 190E was it was the first car to premier a 5 point multilink rear axel. BMW didn't do this until like 1995. This was a major performance advantage and probably why mercedes put this into racing was just do demonstrate their handling advantage.
What company makes the 1/18 Toyota GT-One behind you?

Maybe you mentioned before but the W201 wanted to fight first in group B Rallye.
Audi with quattro made the change plans somehow…
I remember in the 1994 trying his best as a non Mercedes team in group A9 in former East-Germany.
