    Common problem as the gentleman says. I have sleeved several of these blocks, they usually crack about an inch below the deck into the water jacket. The sleeves sit on a shoulder so they do not actually slide down like the early 215 Buicks. LA Sleeve makes a flanged repair sleeve with lots of wall thickness for a larger than stock bore, or they can be repaired with a larger OD straight liner, I've used both.

    could this result in very slight coolant loss when the coolant is under high pressure as well as white smoke from the exhaust at same time?

    how much labor involved in rebuilding ( per head ) to do a resleeve headgasket repair on avg for disco 2 4.0 liter bosh ? also wondering if the tappet noise that those liners make during driving under load from a leak , could this be duplicated by blowing compressed air into overflow cap ? my rover headgasket just blew out on side causing the cho cho air noise , praying it was manifold but also have sleeve chatter as well .... not even blue devil will prolong my fate ... guess i love the pain

    How did you tap into the block and pressurise the coolant system, that looks like a special flange adapted to the block?
    great idea though ,thanks..

    Did you have to block off the other 2 water jacket holes on the other bank as well to do the pressure test❤

    Ok I know my head gaskets are weeping really tiny spots.i pulled all the plugs and didn't see any steamed .is that a good sign for me? It has a lot of carbon build up on plugs intake .but it runs smooth as anything I have ever heard.

    A loose sleeve may make a tappet like noise which will confuse many not familar with the engine. One I had didn't even have the decency to use any coolant. Understand the Buick 215 used a cast in sleeve with ridges, casting failure rate I was told could be up to 90%...ouch!.
    Many engines appear to develop this issue post overheating.

    Haha! Are you saying its game over? I just got this issue on my Dii with the ticking/ knocking noises that others have with the slipped sleeve. Mine only has 106k miles on it.

      slipped sleeve usually means that the blocks cracked

  • @madisonelectronic

    I am glad for you that the block does not use sea shells or pickled peppers or we really would be screwed. Why not just get a new block with all the work involved?

    Check out RPi's channel on how to resleeve these blocks. Duh!

    I heard you say you can remove the sleeves. You can actually and you can buy new sleeves. This is a rover engine? 4.6ltr or 4ltr?

    Is there any one have a 4 ltr Thor engine for sell here

  • @seapeddler
    @seapeddler 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Unfortunately, to remove the block also damages the engine mounts which are sleeved to the frame which must be replaced, as well as the sleeve on the cigarette lighter. I had the same engine and I had it spray welded on the top and both block surfaces remachined. I now have 600 000 000 mi. on the speedo, and she purrs like a Lada.

    Flanged sleeves

  • @tonye4176
    @tonye4176 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wrong
    Not a “slipped sleeve” it’s a crack behind the sleeve that allows coolant to pass up behind the steel sleeve and into the combustion chamber

      @@steve447 Was this an overheat that caused the sleeve to slip or just a lousy product? A very bad day for the customer. Cool video !!

    • @steve447
      @steve447 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brettkramer Very much caused by bad machining at the factory. Overheating can play a small part but eventually, all engines with this defect will fail at some point. The land rover factory didn't want to invest in honing the machinery that build the faulty engines because that line of vehicle was on its last run.

    • @brettkramer
      @brettkramer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steve447 What's your experience been with replacement sleeved blocks, did Range Rover or another company finally solve this problem? Can owners that shell out the 5-7K for a new block expect to get 200K+ miles with the new block? The newer Range Rover Sports are really nice looking vehicles, but their maintenance issues are enough to scare away all but the most rabid RR fans. Thanks!

    • @steve447
      @steve447 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brettkramer The casting misalignment issues were specific to the Land Rover Discovery 2. That issue would cause microscopic leaks near the cylinder walls, against the outside of the sleeve. The issue you're describing is a slipped sleeve, which happens because in those years, Land Rover saw fit not to secure the sleeve with anything except friction. So you could buy a refurbished Discovery 2 block with tophat sleeves but there's no guarantee it didn't come from the batch of engines that were casted and machined poorly.
