  • These are 7 tools I wouldn't pick up from Harbor Freight. There are much better options for the price of many of these. The prices can vary in difference but are all similar. Most of these are electricians tools since that is what I focus on the most.

I own a mix of higher end tools and HF stuff. Gotta disagree with you on most of what you said. Regarding those Doyle beaters, they are an excellent option and are my go to when duty calls. The HF warranty is hands down the best around. No hassle or fuss. Unlike my Wera, Knipex, etc, I wouldn’t even know where to start if I had to warranty them. There is definitely a market for both sides of this argument. Harbor Freight has been eating the competitors’ lunch and I’m here for it.

I use the Doyle demo screwdriver and for the price it’s fantastic, plus it’s got a lifetime warranty so if anything happen HF will replace it no questions asked.

I'm not a harbor frieght guy, but... It's hard to do a review if you never touched or used the tools. That being said, I really like all your other videos.

Normally I like your videos, but I really can't see bashing on stuff just because it comes from harbor freight. You've literally never used most of what you're talking about so you have no experience to say stay away from them. Yes, harbor freight does sell some junk, but it's not necessarily junk JUST because it's harbor freight. Most everything they sell that's hercules brand is actually pretty good. The tape measure is actually pretty nice, has a good stand out, good retraction, and is accurate. It's competitively prices against the fatmax tapes which is what it competes with. Their hercules cordless power tools are competitive with the pro brands at a cheaper price. I fully understand having nice tools, as I probably carry $800-$1000 worth of hand tools everyday in my $500 tool pouch, but it doesn't mean the cheaper options are bad. Plus all the icon mechanics tools I own or have used work just as good as any snap on tool I've ever used, for less than 1/2 the price most of the time.

I don't believe I currently own any hand tools from Harbor Freight. I do own Klein, Knipex, and Milwaukee. That said, I'm unconvinced by your point of view, especially regarding the pliers. Do the HF pliers have excessive [sideways] play in them? Have you known them to break in reasonably ordinary usage? Other than aesthetics, do you have objective measures against the HF versions?
In particular, if someone is already in a HF to pick up something else, is there specific harm they might expect if they save themselves a trip to Home Depot or Lowe's, and pick up a few of their hand tools?

The pliers wrench is Definitely worth it.
Just wait for a 30% coupon and you get a LIFETIME WARRANTY.
I put them to use a few times a week never had an issue they are SOLID.
Plus if they do ever break I can swap them out SAME DAY at my Local HF with Knipex you have to pay to send it them then hope they warranty your Pliers

I must say too. Buying name brand for the stuff I use every day and also my in the van bags I get buying the best. For a helper for the day or employee bag or the nasty job it’s nice to have cheaper brand. Doesn’t have to be hft or icon but brands like husky or kobalt etc work for that just fine. Milwaukee and dewalt too. Not everything I buy has to be Klein and wera and snap on. I have reaonanfor variety

I use hf stuff so it can stay in my car or wherever and not get stolen. They are getting better w quality especially pliers and ratchets. For cutting stuff it’s good for cheap stuff you only use a few times. Also 11” zipties for $2. Super lube is awesome. I have a snap on version of most things and now I look for things that are better. I like pb Swiss screwdrivers and vessel recently. I tried wera and didn’t really like the handles. I do use their square plus ones though every day. Wiha and dewalt seem to make the best bits. I kept them, Milwaukee, snap on, and pb Swiss bits and pretty much got rid of everything else. When you try to use some icon bits from their mini ratchet wrench set and you are used to those you might throw the bits away. I leave them in different cars for an emergency though

i disagree with the beater screwdriver point. i have the doyle one is it does excellent for what i use it for which is to pry, poke, and hammer on. If i break it, i can just go to hf and get a new one. or if i lose it, im out 7$. I bet the wera chisel driver is nice but i see that particular one more as a luxury item than it being better. Anyways keep up the great videos. love hearing your different perspectives on tools

The Doyle insulated screwdrivers are rated, just like every other insulated screwdriver in the market, to 1000V. They're are certified by the VDE Testing and Certification Institute (Verband der Elektrotechnik), and comply with the standards outlined by the International Electrotechnical Commission under IEC 60900:2012. These are the two TOP CERTIFICATIONS in the industry, World-wide, for insulated hand tools.
WERA, WIHA, Klien, MILWAUKEE, Commercial Electric, Hypertough, Lenox, Fluke, Greenlee, IDEAL (my choice), etc., etc., etc. are all certified to that exact same standard. The same. No exception. No company would survive one second if it sold non-compliant insulated screwdrivers into the stream of commerce. The prosecutors would have a field day.
So....why should the DOYLE insulated screwdrivers not be an option? You never said "why"?
p.s. I bought a Klein stubby and it broke within 1-hour. Back to Lowe's. Went to HF and bought that pair of stubbies that you showed. They're still around the bag.

The best value at HF is the easy Sears like warranty. Plus if you buy a lot of tools you should have an account there, so you shouldn’t ever pay full prices. Doyle makes great pliers, but the knives do suck; get Toughbuilt knives.

I do buy stuff at hf from time to time like the icon right angle needle nose and screw extraction snapon clones. But they were 20 vs 100 each when it comes to knipex I'm not gonna save a buck on there twingrips or cobras when it's so close in price 6 and 10 dollars. To be fair screwdrivers are deeply personal so that varies wildly but even vessel for the 3ish sizes you need can be had around that price. I do like wera beaters but the all black handle demo driver version is even stronger than the one he showed. I've even used the wera demon driver to pin heavy machinery buckets in place. It's 23 to 26 dollars for the 12mm 8in one only a few dollars more than the one he suggested. Or say you want the yellow handle ones he showed they make a model with a 1/4 square drive in the back of them for racheets extensions and t handles. You can still beat them senseless with the square drive on the back still all metal throughout. Tldr expand your options and you'll find a better tool for the sameish price as big box stores at a much better quality! Don't be impatient and buy junk adjacent.

My son has all the top brands. He has snap on for diesel and automotive, wright for ACT, but he assembled icon metric set using coupons, and did it very cheaply even hand tools, with coupons again, to build a toolkit for his new 2023 daihatsu hijet box truck camper from bug truck of tarbow japan, he used a milwaukee drawer system with cnc cut out foam I think? I cant remember.
He built a quinn set in metric for his honda acty and honda monkey and spare handtools. He did hf route as in our small town, while he has access to a tool truck well a few, he can walk into lowes with craftsman and kobalt, to home depot for husky, hf for quinn and icon as well pitty pro. things you cant skimp on like elec stuff he says and for pro work bags and diff setups, he will use name brands haha. He just got a vintage snap on gmtk for greyhound, that says GREYHOUND NEW YORK on them haha, pretty cool. very very old, and I guess was an unused/issued set? he has a toolset from sk thats for a ford dealer, and they were engraved, pretty cool too haha. Why cant I ever find stuff like that hahaha.
Well I am always looking for golf stuff so nm...haha.

I 100% agree with you (and think a lot of people are missing the point) that it makes no sense buying hf on certain tools when you could buy the better quality stuff for the same price or a little more. HF certainly has its place but I currently don't own any of their tools. My go to is Klein, knipex, wera, wiha, and fujiya to name a few. HF is competing with kobalt, Craftsman, DeWalt, and some other homeowner brands. Their tools have no business trying to match prices with top quality tools. However, there is a large percentage of people who just don't know better and that's how they continue to make money.

Tools you should buy from HF, uni-bits best deal! Mechanical tools, air tools. Tools you don’t use everyday. If the price is right.

Vessel screw drivers, and you’ll thank me later. Japanese JIS screwdriver so not a Philips head, but it works even better on a Phillips screw. Phillips screws are designed to cam out at roughly 35 inch pounds. With a JIS screw driver it won’t came out. Lastly if you’re working on a Japanese car and need to remove a “Phillips” screw, it’s not a Phillips fastener, it’s a JIS fastener which you will reck with Phillips screwdriver.
I own Snap On new and old, old SKs, Macs, old Craftsman (USA made) and some newer beater channel lock (USA made). I only use my vessels anymore. They’re very affordable too.

HF prices have become higher and higher. The ICON name has just brought the prices up across the other brand lines with it being the top of the line. It basically is their designer line which probably is their most profitable line. So for some incremental improvements over their Doyle or Pittsburgh tool lines you get to pay a premium for made in Taiwan or China tools.

I had the lowest of low budget build harbor freight Pittsburgh stuff to everything under snap on. I refuse to pay those prices. Pittsburgh will get you there JUST AS WELL AS THE HIGH END BRANDS. However they are definitely more prone to breaking. I’ve had a few Pittsburgh ratcheting ratchets slip on me over the years and each time I return it with no questions asked. If you are nice and it comes in a set they will swap the entire set out for you. The icon stuff however is actually legit. I wouldn’t mock anyone caring anything harbor freight stuff. It’s like the Ryobi of the power tool world.

No strong disagreements. I do own stuff from hft, like icon. I see one thing different than u. I like many brands in my edc and tool bags as it helps me locate and organize quickly. Plus if I’m up high and need something it’s easy to ask someone to grab something for me. Like it’s easy to see and describe my flat heads va my Phillips vs nut drivers etc as different brand. I love wera klein pb Swiss wiha ko-Ken snap on Milwaukee and tool truck brands etc. I do buy nice and the brands colors and designs help me find and also quickly do check at end of job etc😊

I was listening at first and in agreement over not buying harbor freights more expensive tools because they’re no longer great value. But disappointed u never even used most these tools you’re reviewing. Spending $40 vs $50 on pliers is 25% more. I’d rather spend 4K on my tool collection than 5k. Everything you suggest is buy the wera or Klein or Knipex instead.sorry to say, but I think you’re just a tool snob.

    • @lylewaters6161

Coping for what? I have tons of high end tools that I use occasionally. I’m a tool snob yes. I’d almost argue that I’m coping more buy buying high end fancy tools that I’d only use a couple of times a year rather than buying something more reasonable that will likely last just as long, have an easier warranty process if I ever had to exercise the warranty, and spend less money. Except that I wouldn’t have the cool factor of having expensive tools. Yeah, I don’t buy expensive tools because I want to look good, I really do like the quality, but Harbor Freight has some great stuff as well and I’m not too proud to admit that.

  • @lylewaters6161
    @lylewaters6161 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

So I have a whole bunch of high end tools as well, Wera, Wiha, Knipex, PB Swiss, Felo, Festool, etc. I don’t use my tools to make money (I’m not a contractor), but I do use them for work and for DIY. I will freely admit that I am a tool snob. However, there are lots of tools that I buy and that I like from Harbor Freight. They do make a lot of junk, but they also do make a lot of quality stuff too. Many have already pointed out the Harbor Freight warranty as one of the major selling points. They have lots of stores and don’t ask any questions or for a receipt, the warranty (on the items that do have a lifetime warranty) is awesome. Very much like Sears in the day. Another major selling point is that they always have sales and they used to have coupons all the time. In the past you could easily get a 25% off coupon e-mailed to you each month. Their coupons for % off are less frequent now, but if you shop there regularly, you often don’t pay retail price on nearly anything. Honestly I also find the employees there to be very helpful and friendly. Harbor Freight has a reputation for selling low quality crap but they are expanding and I feel like they are really making an effort to offer higher quality products. Also, their customer service (both in store and over the phone/internet) is excellent. The stores aren’t very convenient for me since I live in Hawaii and they don’t have any stores here, but I make it a point to visit them whenever I go somewhere that has a Harbor Freight store. I’m glad that I haven’t had to warranty anything from Wera, but if I did I can’t imagine it being as easy as Harbor Freight. Check out their ICON 35-piece locking flex head and ratchet bit set. I like it better than my Wera ToolCheck plus.
