From a bike fit perspective, is there any difference between a setback seatpost with a saddle pushed forward relative to the post, and a 0 setback seatpost with the saddle pushed back relative to the post? #askgcntech

I was lucky enough to have Calvin as a mentor when I was young and learning to work on bikes. Before college, I asked for a tool box. He gave me a tool box full of tools and told me to help other people. Since then, I’ve never turned down a friendly request to help with bike issues. Thanks, Calvin, for the tool box and wisdom too.

It’s funny, Calvin and I entered the bike tech world in a similar manner. When I was in college I bought a road bike. Prior to college, I raced motorcycles and could take apart a motorcycle with my eyes closed. When I entered college money was tight and I had to give up motorcycle racing. I purchased a road bike in order to feed my love for two wheels. When I got my road bike I realized I had no idea how to work on it which was frustrating because bicycles are, to the unknowing, simple machines. I became close with the manager of my LBS from shop rides and coming in for maintenance. One day I asked if I could hang out in my spare time and watch the techs wrench on bikes to learn some basics to keep me on the road. After some time I asked if I could try adjusting gears and changing housing and such. I got to the point I would go in and they would allow me to work on building new bikes. After a bit longer they allowed me to wrench on customer bikes. One day they had a tech leave and the shop owner said since I spend so much time there how about he start paying me for my work. I worked as a bike tech all throughout college.
Now, on group rides, if anyone has a technical I’m the guy who stops and helps riders get repaired and back on the ride. Dang I love this sport!

      Hi Jon,
Could you help me? I was wondering if it would be possible to use a Shimano Alfine Di2 road shifter set with an Ultegra RX800 Di2 rear derailleur and a 1x11 transmission. I'm not sure if the Ultegra Di2 set up will work without a front derailleur, and I'd like to know before investing any money in it.
If you're unsure about which shifters, it's these ones: www.bikeradar.com/news/article/shimano-alfine-di2-first-pictures-33229/

Disc probes but want the calliper in the same position. solution shim the axle then re-dish the wheel to centre a touch job done. but don't forget if you add to one side U need to subtract from the other and you may need to work on both sets of wheels I feel your pain I've been there. (cx racer) costs pennies but is a painful process 😉

#askGCNTech I'm looking at getting some new gravel tyres for my CX bike for use off road/winter commuting, and I'm trying to ascertain whether they'll fit in my frame. I couldn't find anything online with clear maximum tyre clearances. I'm going to measure up and work out what'll fit or not, but are there any general rules around leaving extra space for mud clearance? (e.g. always at least 6mm extra for mud clearance)
For reference it's a boardman CX comp 2014 and I'm looking at either a 40mm WTB nano, or a 42mm WTB Resolute

*I love Calvin Jones!!!* Many years ago, after my local bike shop ruined the bottom bracket on my 1985 Fuji road bike, I decided it was time to learn how to service my bike, myself. My first step was to find a good bike repair manual. I purchased "the best" -- Calvin's venerable "Blue Book" for Park Tools. I still keep the 1st and 2nd editions handy. Thank you Calvin!!! The first edition of your repair manual was a "game changer" for me!

Thank you, Calvin, for the smile over the sticker hack. Last year outside a local antique store, a weathered bike was for sale and it was nothing special, just an old Sears bike or something, but its frame was adorned with about 15 random, oval stickers--STP stickers. And it was so authentic to its day, when American kids stuck stickers on their bikes. And, let's face it, an STP sticker was the best way to make your bike fast like a racing car.

#askGCNTech last week I replaced the worn disc pads on evolution calipers. I forced back the pistons as far as they would go in, but with the new pads in there was no way the wheel was going back in. There wasn't enough room for the disc. After much manhandling and damage to the new pads, I released the bleed screw on the caliper and let out 5 or so mls of brake fluid. The pistons then pushed back in far enough to allow the wheel to go on. How did they get the wheel on when the calipers were new (before I wore them out)?

Regarding setting up 2 sets of wheels to work without having to realign brake calipers…why not shim one rotor? Have seen this suggestion in many other places, and tried it myself. I have not yet exploded into a ball of flames, but I’m the first to admit there’s a lot I don’t know. Nevertheless, I can now swap my wheels with ease. Actually they’re the same hubs, and they STILL don’t both align perfectly without one being shimmed.

Greait show! and my problem is: my tyres dont place even round the rim, at some place the bid dont go right into the groove of the rim - it stack something 1 or 2mm below right position (talking about clincher) so when you spin the wheel there is some shalow place and while riding it gives some vibrations. Lube like liquid sope or vaseline doesnt help, tryed inflate to max - doesnt help. It happens with shcwalbe range cruiser 37mm and panaracer rimbo 32mm on 28mm wide rim. Spent 2 hours with panarecer before iron man 70.3 to get it right at last. But when i switch back to shcwalbe after another 2 hours of swearing can get even and smooth spins, still bid doesnt want to go at the right spot. For 10 yers of bike maintanens it hapens first time. I am a bicycle mechanic syce 2000 started at Hungary now I am at Lowestfoft Engalnd, What I see that there is a smal amount of real bike specialist/mechanic because no qualification need for the job and also underpaid. I stick with it because is part of my life this is my passion. Do you thing that there is any chance to push out the junk from the industrie like Halfords/Cyclerepublic "mechanics" who are don't know what they doing at all ? (it is Halford faults not the "mechanics" who are try to work there. there is no training at all etc)
Sorry for the crappy english :D

Hi John. I’ve recently had a new KTM Lisse with Ultegra Di2 shifting and love how crisp the shifting is however, when in the lowest gear (little ring on the front and largest sprocket at the back) the chain pops off the sprocket effectively changing gear by itself. I have tried to micro adjust the rear derailleur but this causes excessive chain rub and does not solve the problem. Any ideas? Thanks Ryan. #askGCNTech

#askGCNTech Since autumn officially starts this month and bad weather 'll come with it. I'm looking at smart trainers (direct drive), preferably below 1000 euro's. I have many questions at this moment, do they all support my campa groupset? What would be a good one to join swift? What are other software options to get a nice visual immersive experience?

#askGCNtech can you explain the different STI positions over the generations? For example i cant seem to get my 105 5600 shifters in the same position as the 5700. They allways angle upward. Is there a fix for that or did the ergonomics and position just change over time? Huge thanks

Most of my bikes are from the 70’s to the 90’s. I’m just getting into home bicycle repairs for myself. Do you have a bicycle tool set that you have for these year bicycles? If not what do you recommend? Thank you.
