I had never thought of locking down vultures with a grappleworm. 🤔 Fascinating. Not sure if it's the best overall strategy with the dangers of doing it, but it's a really cool thing to see in action.

I've watched videos of this game but I still don't understand how combat works. Like, what's preventing the downed vulture from biting you to death when you're grabbing your spears back, or just shooting again at point blank?
It's procedural animation, so creatures (and the player) are really a bunch of connected body parts or segments that are moved by physics or the creature ai having a goal (or player input)... as opposed to most games where an attack would show a pre-made animation and manifest a hitbox and if it touches your hitbox you get hit, here its ability to attack depends on what its head is doing, what its body is doing (which might pull its head along with), and what slugcat is doing... technically any time the birb can get its mouth on you it could bite you, but it actually requires that it chooses that action at that time, and that depends on a whole bunch of variables. like personality values that vary per individual, how strongly it's locked on to you as prey (which can even switch to feeling like it's the prey, making it want to flee, like the first bird did). being wounded also progressively makes attacks less frequent and movements more crippled, so when fighting something like this you get used to feeling less cautious when it's starting to look like it's struggling. slugcat constantly moving makes it a harder target too so sometimes when you just need your spear back you gotta just dive in there and try and pull it out and hope you don't dive into its mouth at the wrong time. sometimes you die. actually a lot of times. but skilled players like in this video get a feel for what you can (probably) get away with. I didn't think that was going to be so long when I started but uh... that's rain world I guess
it was probably not choosing to use the harpoon because the player stayed all up in his face at close range. and the fact it was getting hurt and just not fighting as fiercely anymore, and was spending its time trying to get in the air and failing
They never shoot you if you're too close, I've killed a few. Plus when they do the bite you can see them like lean Thier head backwards a bit, so you can prepare for that if you see it.

1. those are not arrows, those are spears, arrows are launched from a bow, spears are thrown or used in melee combat. 2. The vultures start becoming more crippled the more damage they take, making it so they have more trouble moving and start attacking less.
It's hard to see but if they like lean Thier head back and spew a bunch of smoke that means they're preparing for a lunge. If you have enough experience you can react to it.
