You can't hear it anymore once you're 100 m away. Even when standing on the Bridge Wings, just about 20 m away, it's quiet enough to allow normal Conversation. By far the loudest Thing outside a Ship are the Engine Room Fans; they're deafening when standing near them and you can hear them for hundreds of Meters. And the overall loudest Thing are the Turbochargers, but they are in the Engine Room so you can barely hear them on the outside. When standing next to them, they literally sound like a Passenger Jet taking off; after all they're Turbines as well, similarly large to Narrowbody Jet Engines and run at similar Speeds. Little Edit: You probably can't sleep because of the Noise from the Cargo Operations. Loading Containers can be loud as fuck indeed.
The Engine Room is off Limits to Passengers for Safety and Security Reasons. The only Exception I know of were the two Antarctic Expedition Ships Hanseatic and Bremen by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, which offered guided Tours until increased ISPS Security Regulations put an End to that as well. These Ships have been sold two Years ago anyway. Cruise Ships have completely different Engines tho. This here is a slow Two Stroke Engine with very long Stroke, it is very high and would take up a lot of valuable Cabin Space and the Vibrations are not suitable for any Passenger Vessel either. Cruise Ships usually have faster (700-1500 RPM) Engines driving Generators which then feed the Electric Propeller Motors as well as all other Consumers on Board. This allows to place the Engines anywhere on Board. The Engine here is bolted directly to the Propeller Shaft, so it has to run at the very slow Propeller Speed (78 RPM max, 21 RPM min).

There isn't any Smoke in this Video. What you are seeing is Steam from a Vent of a variety of Steam-heated Tanks. If there's Smoke coming from the Exhaust, it's either scorched Walnut Shell Granulate (used for cleaning the Turbochargers and looks like Smoke from a Distance when it comes out of the Exhaust), or Yellow Smoke caused by the high Sulfur Content of the Bunker Oil (the Video was recorded before the IMO 2020 Sulfur Cap). I never saw this Engine smoke in the 18 Months that I was on Board. It doesn't even smoke when starting, as it is always kept at full operating Temperature. The Fuel Injection is fully electronic, so it can be adjusted flexibly to always inject only as much Fuel as Oxygen is available, hence it doesn't smoke while speeding up.
@@Genius_at_Work don't be ridiculous, this has exhaust smoke, no big marine engine runs clean, impossible. Plus you have mismatched pictures of a top half of one engine and another of the bottom end plus the description is in orange that is hard to read with a light background. IF I were you I would scrap this and start again. Bad job all round. The noises don't represent the pictures either, the picture of the exhaust pipe is matched with an engine noise, not exhaust noise. Poor.
Nah, a Container Ship is loud enough as it is. Pretty much the only quiet Place is the Forecastle Deck right at the Bow, and especially around the Accomodations, the Noise Level from the Ventilation Fans is really annoying. The Fans apply to most other Ships too, but what makes Container Ships loud everywhere is the Noise of the Containers and of the many rattling Lashings. I was really glad to have some actual Quiet every Time I came home after many Months of near non stop Racket.
I don't agree with TH-cam hiding Dislikes. 479 Likes, 25 Dislikes, 2022-09-15. Just so you know what to expect from this Video.
Thank you for being this honest

Try turning on a fan or trying somthing to help you sleep then.
