    So much to comment. 😁
5:47 Yes, 1 US Dollar is about 10 Swedish crowns.
6:43 Nope. Renting an apartment is not that expensive. I have no idea where he got that from. Of course the price is depending on where you live, but in an average city in Sweden a "one bedroom" apartment costs like $600. BUT in Sweden we usually don't count bedrooms, but rooms that are not the kitchen or bathroom. So I live in a "2 room apartment" - that means I have one bedroom, one living room, one hallway which is like the entrance, one kitchen with a kitchen table and one bathroom. A room has to be more than 7 square metres and have direct daylight if I understand it correctly. But we are more obsessed with square metres. We don't always know how many rooms we've got, but we always know the area. 😊
7:31 Yeah, gas is out of the roof right now. 24-25 kronor per liter. About 40% of this is actually taxes. I guess Sweden wants us to use less cars... Also electricity is out of the roof sometimes. Like 4-5 kronor per kWh depending on where in Sweden you live.
10:29 "All the way to Denmark".
10:46 That isn't accurate. Only Göteborg, Mölndal, Norrköping, Lund, Stockholm, Lidingö, Sundbyberg, Nacka and Solna has "spårvagn" - "rails wagons". But Gothenburg has loads of them, so I can see his view on it.
11:20 As some has already said: he means driving the car FROM the right or left side, not driving on the right or left.
12:28 Gothenburg is the same latitude as for example: Alaska-Kodiak Island, Alaska-Kruzof Island, Canada-Nunavut, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador.
13:34 Never heard this. Berg=mountain, but borg=castle. I do think Göteborg is named after some kind of fort/castle protecting the place.
16:36 We actually don't take our fika serious. As he says, it is a way to get to hang out with friends, loved ones and family. But it is also an excuse to stop work for a while. But now it's become a world thing, so coffee shops can charge more. 😊
17:25 This here might trigger half the Swedish poulation though. YOU DO NOT MESS WITH THE SEMLA! lol It is a divider if semlas with different shapes and flavours are actual semlas.
19:46 Most petrol stations in Sweden nowadays make their money from food. All the big ones have a selection of food.
20:52 Canadian dollars...which is like 6 US dollars.
Another great reaction! Keep up your good work! 👍

I'm Swedish, but I've also lived and worked in Denmark for some time. I would actually rate Sweden as a bit higher than Denmark on the scale of English affluence. I've simply encountered far more people in Copenhagen, Denmark, who are not comfortable with English, or who try but their general level of English language skills is below those of general people in Sweden. Having written that, English is not my first language.
Anyway, the person in the video is in Gothenburg. It's well-known for having a lot (and that's an understatement) rain. It has a LOT. It is also terribly beautiful, particularly when it doesn't rain. Gothenburg is, by the way, the only Swedish town that has a separate English name.
Lingonberries and cranberries are related, but different. The lingonberries got more flavour and are also slightly more sour.
The quality of food is generally much higher (I've experienced US grocery stores), partially because of high EU standards. That makes the food more expensive, as the manufacturers can't take many shortcuts, but also a lot healthier and more flavourful. Sort of think about Trader Joe's as your ordinary grocery store in Sweden and in most of the rest of the EU, and it should make sense.

(at age nine) but I think they changed it later on to early as the second or even first grade... as age 7 or 8.. I'm not sure.

And I must have done so because my English teacher in the "Gymnasium", grades 10-12, said to me that I didn't have to attend her classes as she felt there was nothing more she could teach me. Hey, I just wanted to share my recepie for my take on meatballs.. I'm from sweden so they would be genuine -though everybody have their own....
Add 2 parts beef 1 part pork minced meat. The higher quality the better.
mix it together and add spices (salt, black pepper, a little chili and nutmeg)
Take some crust flour (about 1/2 cup) and let it rest in a bowl of 1/4 cup of cream so that it soaks up it and gets soft.
Boil 2-3 potatoes during the time you chop two onions finely.
Mash the potatoes and add everything above to the meat and mix it together. Add 2-3 egg yolks to the mixture and start form the balls..
The texture should be like a pate of sorts.
Once the grilling of the meatballs are done you just add some more cream to the pan and make a brownsauce from the leftovers of the grilling.. add some pepper, soy sauce and if you want to you can add some blackcurrant jelly to the mix. Add some flour to create the texture you want of the sauce and
The mashed potatoes are kinda straight forward... boil potatoes and I also add two cloves of garlic to the boil.
Mash them and add salt, white pepper, nutmeg and a whole lot of butter (I'm talking about 0,4-05 pounds for a whole pot) and then some cream to smoth out the texture.
The lingonberrys are a must but for myself I really never have the pickled cucumber.

No the average one bedroom apartment is not 1500 bucks a month. But a one bedroom apartment CAN be 1500 bucks a month. Especially if you are renting somewhere nice where the house is new and everything works. However I live in one of the most "hip" areas of Stockholm right by the water and I have 45 square meters for a little more than 500 bucks. So it really differs on when you moved there, how old the plumbing, electricity etc is and what the standard of living is. I'd say the standard for new renters of relatively new places in the Stockholm which is supposedly the most expensive is about 600-1200 for a one room apartment with a bathroom and a kitchen. But I haven't been looking for an apartment for a very long time since I love it where I live.

  • @KimForsberg

Rent will vary a lot over Sweden, smaller towns in the north will have cheaper rent. Further from town center will likely be cheaper. If you can get a loan, buying an apartment/condo (bostadsrätt) or house will likely be the best option (as long as you're not at the top of the supposed bubble). Similarly costs for food will be less outside city centers. There's so many houses in the north of Sweden that you can get dirt cheap. Only problem is of course... distance to work (ok, it's not the only problem, but it's the big one). Remember, Sweden is pretty darn tall, even when looking at the globe, and not the bad projection of a Mercator map. From the largest northernmost city in Sweden (Kiruna) to the southernmost (Malmö) it's a roughly a 20h drive (1800km) which is basically the same as Portland to San Diego. With remote working etc, this is now an opportunity that may essentially save our countryside from being depopulated. Will be interesting to see developments on that front.

I quite liked this guy's perspective on coming to Sweden, and I noticed a few differences between where he lives and Stockholm where I've been for 15 years now. A few things to note are that his Swedish isn't that good (including his pronunciation of most words), he's eating things like 'bulle' from really cheap places (so I wouldn't call those versions 'delicacies' by any means), he doesn't seem to have tried food at special occasions like Christmas or Midsummer, and AFAIK there's an awful lot more history than Vikings or a 100yo train station.
He really seems to enjoy, however, the simple things like public transport or the rather spartan city suburbs/small towns in middle Sweden. I thought he'd say more about manners or friendliness too

Omg as a Swede, watching these videos are always so painful because there will inevitably be lots of mistakes, even though they are well made. Like the trams are _not_ everywhere in Sweden! Göteborg is famous for having them, and my home town Lund has them. Other places don’t.
Also most Swedes are actually happy to pay higher taxes, what we are passed off about at the moment is feeling like they aren’t used for what they were supposed to be used for: our welfare and infrastructure.
And yes, having a car is super expensive in Sweden. But our country isn’t built around car dependency like the US. If you live in a city, you really don’t need a car. If you live in rural areas a car makes it a lot easier, but I actually know people who even live in rural areas without cars so public transportation is just so much better.
I live in Malmö and go to school and work in the neighboring city Lund, it’s two miles (European miles) and I take the train or bus half the year and the other half I bike. Lots of people do.
Also: _when_ you come to Sweden, let us know and I will buy you a coffee if you come by where I live 🤗

Sweden only changed to right-hand drive on 3 September 1967.
They’d be using cars with the steering wheels on the left side for ages so this also reduced the blind angle when driving - as well as getting in line with all their neghbouring countries.
The main advantage with writing in a foreign language is that you can wrte without an accent. (Pronouncng the English z and j sounds is notoriously difficult. Conversely, the Swedish shibboleth is ‘sju sjösjuka sjömän’.)
And continental Scandinavian languages have, for the most part, the same sentence syntax as English, and with no dubbing for grown-ups one gets used to hearing and understanding spoken English.

It all depens on where you live though, stockholm and gothenburg is massively more expensive then other big cities and it's not even comparable to living say 2-3h away from stockholm by train (which is not very far, it's a long country, I'm sure you understand as an american), and those trains run to stockholm on an hourly basis. My quite big one room flat with a big kitchen is just under $400 a month. This used to be a lot less since in a lot of towns, you get a youth-discount for several years when your first move from home.
Big city living is not comparable at all to the rest of the country. It's also pretty hard finding your own place in those big cities, a lot of it is second hand renting which will also affect it. The apartments that are owned by the municipalities have to stay a somewhat low price since their purpose is to make sure everyone can afford a place. That does not mean they're low quality houses, actually, it's a lot more common that private land lords will have shit places for a way too high price. Now, in smaller cities, majority of apartments are owned by the municipalities, so, in short, state owned. This means good quality housing for a fair price. Don't forget that this is social democrat country, with very low homelessness and very high living standards. MOST things are different in the big cities.

    Some small thoughts/corrections!
    * An average one-room apartment is NOT 1500 dollars a month. That would be either a really fancy apartment, or perhaps one located in a super sought-after location. A normal one-room apartment in a smaller town is maybe half that (or lower).
    * Regarding the gas prices, yup, it is expensive. But the US is also super cheap compared to the rest of the West (probably because you're so car-dependent, making it political suicide to try to tax it any higher).
    * I honestly don't feel much about our taxes lol. Yeah, they're high, but I'm convinced an efficient (and ethical) state needs to tax the citizenry in order to carry out important functions and solve commons dilemmas (e.g. climate change, military, education). You also get a lot back (financial security and the possibility of risk-taking, healthcare, pensions, child care, etc). And taxes are included in the prices and the Swedish IRS does your income tax for you, so you probably don't think about it as much as in the US.
    * Minor detail, but I just find it funny how he is surprised that there is a professional football club in Sweden's second-largest city lol. Rather, it would be extremely weird if there was not, and actually, there are five!
    * Ibrahimovic is from Malmö, more specifically Rosengård (famous/infamous immigrant neighborhood).
    * No need to imitate his Swedish pronunciations, they are way off and your Swedish is a lot better lol.
    * Cardamom is absolutely not standard in meatballs. Honestly, never even heard of it before, and it sounds kinda gross. Maybe it's a regional thing.
